It's tempting but I kind of feel my last couple attempts at returning did more bad than good.  Just don't have the ability to dedicate that much time to it unfortunately.  Maybe I'll visit some time though and... who knows?

Adopted doesn't count :P Besides, the Empire is in a very forgiving mood unless you're a Goldsmith. If Nurahk was adopted by House Goldsmith. Well. He really deserves a dagger to his back.

Psh, adopted is the only thing that counts.  That's a choice, you can't choose what you're kid is like if you have it naturally.  And he was the last Greenmoon Emperor, he wouldn't want to be Emperor but wouldn't his validity make him a threat?

Come back and rub some more corruption on it. Or something

Come back.

I've a sneaky feeling that me coming back would result in only one story line:

Jilata reluctantly ( I hope ) killing an old Nurahk after being ordered to do so.

Houses of Greenmoon and Goldsmith had left our Empire filled with corruption and inefficiency

Wow, way to be dismissive.  Believe me, it was no mean feat to create so much corruption.  I demand recognition for my incredible efforts in corrupting everything I touched!

The most important detail is not the programming language, but the game. Develop the game first without any line of source code.

If you want to actually get a job the complete opposite is true.  Low level programming languages are a must, how 'fun' your game is doesn't matter at all.  I'd push you towards doing demos more than anything.  They're more likely to be completed and more likely to be impressive.  Finishing a game is always a good thing to do but hardly the most important.

Don't start with Planeshift when it comes to programming.  Too large of a project for somebody who calls themselves a newbie programmer.

I'd suggest doing a few of your own projects.  C# is a good starting language if you're really starting out.  A good IDE is extremely important and there are few as good as Visual Studio (the express editions are free.)  You'll want to look at XNA if you do choose C#, I'd suggest SFML if you'd rather go C++.  Either way you'll want to get used to source control and for that I suggest using git.  It's growing in the industry and is really the best source control out there.  SVN is worth knowing as it's quite a bit more like perforce than git is (perforce is currently king in the industry.

Always happy to see somebody is getting interested in game programming.  Wish you the best.

General Discussion / Re: Stepping Up Your Game: Creating Awesome Characters

That was a run-on sentence.

Favourite post ending ever; your characters may be considered part of the starring cast along with mine.  No more supporting cast for you!

The most important thing to consider when creating a character is what I call the 'servitude factor.'

Considering all other characters are in the game to be plot devices for my characters, it's important for everybody to really consider how their character will improve my characters' stories.  Will he be my bodyguard?  An obsessed fan?  Right hand man?

All other things are really secondary.

The Hydlaa Plaza / Re: "Why the concept of Mary Sue is sexist"
« on: January 06, 2012, 05:25:19 pm »
did none of y'all read my link?

The term 'Mary Sue' comes directly from a piece of Star Trek fan fic published in 1974 (so it's not as newer slang than you think) in which the character Mary Sue inhibits all of the characteristics we apply to the term.

Yes, the story is a parody of the phenomenon. But to say calling someone a Mary Sue is sexist against women would be like saying calling someone a Benedict Arnold is sexist against men. Those who use the term Mary Sue correctly know very well it can be applied to male wish fulfillment author avatar types. We also know that not all Author Avatars are Mary Sues. For example, Killgore Trout.

I miss you, Aramara.

As far as Planeshift, Mary Sue comes up probably more for male characters than female characters in PlaneShift.  At the very least it's about even.  I'd say it's definitely not sexist here.  Hell, Nurahk was called Mary Sue a few times... Mostly by me... :P

General Discussion / Re: Enkidukai... and the gods
« on: January 06, 2012, 05:08:20 pm »
The lack of knowledge of the old gods was decided and explained by Settings while I was part of the team.  The reasoning was never released (to my knowledge) and may have been changed since I left.

As for the whole first character conundrum (or even, characters who became contradictory to the settings once the settings team released some information), it's very annoying.  I'd suggest looking into explaining it or making a new character.  The Dark Empire's name was a contradiction after some of settings came out and that made it very annoying; we had to change a lot of it.

Nurahk had some backstory which didn't fit with the settings, my solution: he went crazy for a while :P

There's a balance between taking settings too seriously (restricting yourself) and ignoring it (having to explain/defend yourself).  I'd say the closest you can get to the settings part the easier it'll be.

General Discussion / Re: Introducing NPCs day/night cycles
« on: January 05, 2012, 02:54:43 pm »
Just pointing out that some of the NPC movements might need rethinking, unless the quest scripts are also changed e.g. Tilavi sends me to Hirenn cos she wants a night off and can't go herself, and then who should wander into Hirenn's while I'm talking to him but Tilavi herself. I'm like, "Screw it, do your own errands, fenki."

From my experience with fenkis, that behaviour is perfectly consistent.

I'm Khado and I lurk quite a bit.  Don't post often though.

I miss the Community Awards.

<3

Where are you? Why aren't you trying to steal my blind menki away?

I'm too busy with work, school and stuff to be here and steal menkies.   Do miss you guys, though.  How's everything going?

Hello Mogballs! o/
Also, did you know: back in Molecular Blue, removing someone from your buddy list when they weren't on it in the first place caused the server to spit out their character ID number. You could compare and see whose ID is lower to see who was the oldest oldbie!
Yep, if I recall correctly, Vengeance was the #1 :D
Anyway, seeing Khado's mug on facebook has given me this sudden urge to check how he and Sangwa fare in this fab-yuh-luhs place recently. They don't fare, apparently, but that's my story!

Now, here are my additions:
1. Remember when Moogie was a clueless newb? :D
2. Remember when Annah was running a more-than-one-person guild? (I sure don't!)
or more to the point
3. Remember when we had the Annual Community Awards?

I'm Khado and I lurk quite a bit.  Don't post often though.

I miss the Community Awards.

I went poof because of completely valid and understandable reasons.  Unlike Farren who was completely unreasonable!
