don't have to be a 3d-guru to be able to create usable and enjoyable models.

Ohw...?

Sure there is, you can check it with different forms of lighting, vertex paint, other texture you use in your level etc. And it's gonna end up in a 3d program anyway. So if you're not really short on memory there's no excuse not to put it in a 3d program right away :)

P.S. I did find a tile viewer which looks okish (AMP tile viewer). Guess it's nice when you want to check your tiling and you don't wanna start a 3d program.

P.S.S. Just to clearify we're talking about the same thing here, I'm not talking about making texture seamless, but more about the repetition of patterns.
(If you want to know what i mean, go stand on a grassy plain in WoW ;)

Was pretty easy to do, got a nice base from a texture cd (think it was a wall photograph).
Got the contrast evenly spread out by clonestamping.
Added a light noise layer as overlay with a low opacity.
Added a little bit of color (light brown) againi on overlay with a low opacity.
Painted the (straight)lines in, made a selection on the original photo, inverted that selection and deleted parts of the lines with that.
Got drunk, but only HALFWAY!
Liquified it to make the lines whobbly.
Painted some cracks on the sides on an overlay layer.

In the meantime, i was constantly checking in max if the tiling went right.

I'll upload the psd later tonight...

http://67.15.36.49/team/Tutorials/benmathis/benmathis_1.asp

Do above tutorials, learn anatomy, learn how to draw (a bit) and learn how to texture, practise an awefull lot, practise more, post your work on forums like:

http://www.cgchat.com
http://www.cgtalk.com
http://www.polycount.com

These are all forums where pro's post, and where you can get real constructive critisism from them + some of these sites host great (video) tutorials.

Also, like Arcane said, always have some kind of reference about what you're making. You can mix all kinds of creatures as long as the anatomy looks right. Pics of that are easy to find on google, like this one:

Or, like for your fish, look up some anatomy pics from whales (i got some great ones, if you want them lemme know).
Another thing is your 3d package, i don't know if you're planning to get into the graphics industry, but i'd suggest that if you want to, learn a program what actually is used a lot in that industry (like 3dsmax, maya, xsi or lightwave). All these programs have a trail package and/or an option to use a light version of the thing for free (or almost for free) if that's your thing.

If you want more links or info lemme know  :)

Well, we actually did, but we where disqualified beforehand. We wanted to show our progress on the forums and i guess we couldn't. Still kinda strange because all the textures are shown now...
Imho the best thing in such a contest is the feedback you get on your wips, why else start a contest? You're suppost to learn from it...right?
On the other side (like Arcance said) we don't really care wheter our stuff comes in PS or not, we just did it for the fun of it.

Gentar: Well you have to ask yourself, is it really worth not having anything of yours in Planeshift just to post your images a month early? Most players would love to have anything of their's in-game, so its really kind of odd that you would take it for granted like that.
That's kinda funny ;)

Hit 6 (and painting with a mouse sucks, me misses wacom...)
And I didn't post/painted anything for a while because i am ill.
Ohw, and making a texture without the actual 3d model (and no, i do not mean the in-game viewer thingy) sucks bigtime. Next time, plz add the .max (or .3ds) file too.
