Are there drivers for Windows Vista Home Basic?
« on: July 09, 2007, 01:28:01 pm »
Thanks to Kaityra's suggestions, I was finally able to enter the game. However, the floor keeps changing to dirt and then to ice. Sometimes it looks like I'm walking on the sky.
So I've tried to update my drivers using www.nvidia.com but their site will not allow me to use any of them since I have Windows Vista Home Basic. I checked my graphics card: It is an Intel(R) GMA Driver. I'm not exactly sure what that means, but is it enough to play the Planeshift? I have read the System Requirements but it is  a little difficult for me to understand. If my driver is the problem, is there a website that anyone knows which I can visit and update my drivers for Windows Vista Home Basic? I have done share of searching. but to no avail.

Thank you for your help.

Onboard graphics are not recommended to play Planeshift. If I were you I would buy a cheap second hand graphics card.

Thanks. Darn! What a bummer! Anymore suggestion?
It would really help me.

Wait a minute, I know someone who has the same model of computer that I do, and he is still able to play Planeshift perfectly.  ::|

I would also check out the Crystal Space website as well to see if they have any recommendations for running under Vista.  I am not sure how many of their developers use Vista so it might be a while before everything works well there.

PlaneShift runs perfectly for both me and Xordan under Vista, so you shouldn't have any problems if your drivers are up to date - and if you meet the minimum requirements, which calls for an actual graphics card.

Okay. That's good to know, but how do I know if my drivers are up-to-date. I got this computer about a month ago. How do I know if I have an actual graphics card? What do they look like? Where can I get one?

Thank you for your time.

Type dxdiag into the Windows Run command and check the Display tab. Your current card and driver will be mentioned there. If it's from Intel, go to the Intel website and download the latest drivers - you'll notice a link on their site.

If you bought your computer and have a warranty for it, make sure that opening the computer case and fiddling with the inside (which includes changing or adding parts) isn't going to void that warranty before you go card hunting.

*blast Karyuu basically said everything I was going to say, the she beat me to the submit button*

so only one thing left she didn't say:

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=N&ProductID=&DwnldID=13085&strOSs=OSFullName=&lang=eng

edit: also if you got a cheap PC, it might not even have an AGP or PCIe slot for a graphics cards, basically another way to cut the cost of a computer and make it look cheaper to a customer who doesn't know any different.

Wow. Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I truly appreciate it. I've downloaded the driver from Miadon's link, but it still refuses cooperate with my computer. I would have tried Karyuu's suggestion, but I'm afraid I do not have a 'windows run' tab. I typed in: dxdiag, in the search bar but it found nothing. I will wait for the server to run again, and see what happens.

Thank you all very much  :) \\o// for your time and help.

first of all you dont have a graphics card :p You have onboard graphics meaning the chip that deals with graphics is inbuilt to the motherboard it self. Also none of that information says what chip you use, you need to click on the graphics tab if I remember correctly.

Doing a search for your chipset it seems to be an "Intel 945GM" The link I gave you for the drivers is the correct one.

Hmmm...how strange. When I tried to install it, it said that 'it won't work with my computer, and program will now exit.' Anyway, I'll wait for awhile to try again. But thanks again. :)

Well, it's been a year now; lol. I have searched the forums and tried almost every suggestion. (I don't not want to open up my computer and mess around with things).

What I don't understand is that I could play a newer game on this computer...
Would someone please be so kind to compare these requirements with Planeshift?

These are the requirements for the game I currently play:
OS Windows XP, Windows Vista Windows XP, Windows Vista
CPU Intel Pentium IV 1.6GHz equivalent Intel Pentium IV 2.0GHz or equivalent
RAM 512MB 1GB
HD Space 3GB 3GB
Graphics Card nVIDIA GeForce MX (or equivalent) nVIDIA GeForce TI or Radeon 9200
DirectX DirectX 9.0c or higher DirectX 9.0c or higher
Connection Speed DSL (128kpbs) or better DSL (256kpbs) or better

I believe comparing these requirements with Planeshift's may help me understand the problem more.

Thank you, again. :)
