Title: Trash bins
Post by: Cirerey on March 24, 2011, 08:55:35 am
This is probably stupid, but metalworkers and cooks (and others) produce trash from time to time. Putting in trash bins where one could drop dust and goop would help to keep Yliakum beautiful. I see it as a container with a fifo algorithm. The oldest items get deleted as it gets full, so people could still go through the trash and see if there was good stuff in there. Naturally nothing in there could be guarded. If it's in the trash, it's for the taking.

Thoughts?

Practical. I'd make it a bit different though: trash bins would have a capacity and they'd be "emptied" every in-game day at a definite hour or two.

It's not stupid. There's actually a good 'market' for it like the items you've mentioned, plus broken weapons and tools.

Technically, you can usually "sell" even mistaken results of your work to a matching NPC. A "Pile of Dust" belongs to the item group of "Raw materials".

Unfortunately their value is only 0 tria ...

"Secondary Resource Acquisition" ~ "SERO" (collecting and selling empty bottles, ragged clothes, waste paper, and scrap metal) was famous in the GDR (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAqWISJDTdw), but not yet in medieval times?!

I think just a single tria for trash item would help to keep the place more clean at least.

There have been scrappers for as long as humans have existed. The idea of a trash bin that gives 1 tria per item is interesting.

We can have NPCs buying trash or we can have trash bins. I prefer the latter, but I won't mind settling with the previous, no matter how silly it is.

@LigH: No one gets your gerberish.

Furnaces can't be placed in every block. Oh wait. They can. Do it!

This is a good idea. People could do it easily, and some could even do it for a living. ( However they'd have to live poorly. )

This idea is good, you could probably even buy them for guild houses.

This could be a problem what happens to trash when the bin gets full. Where you going to put all the trash. I know what you are thinking this is a stupid opinion, but to make it more realistic where would the trash go?

I believe that the trash would either be burnt, or salvaged by the poor... Sometimes little children who'd want a weapon. :P

Someone would take it out? Who cares, just as long as it goes away. :P

Mhm. I'm thinkin' salvage shops... The guy comes in and takes the garbage ( This stuff is free for the taking; before it gets deleted of course ) And he could possibly create new things out of these once good things... Or just sell them to people who want to turn them into goods.

Example: A broken and rusty iron axe was thrown in the trash bin, salvager comes along and takes it. Shines it up, works with the damages a bit, and sells it as a ' used good '

I'd rather have it as Knightspark says rather than making trash sell-able. First because the latter makes no sense, second because you have to go through lengths if you happen to be in a place without a merchant who will buy your trash for some silly reason. It would also create a new waste market like he pointed out.

Burning trash isn't ecologically good, especially for the underground realm, where other environmental issues are carefully considered (water pollution for example and etc.). Just kidding anyway :) Furnaces are OK for it, but not so much IC.

Trash bins could be used in spy RP too. When someone throws a sack to the bin and the secret agent picks it up.

Perhaps the same secret society that removes dead bodies and killed monsters to the burial wells could empty the trash? Irrelevantly, I've always seen them in my minds eye as faceless figures in black robes and top hats.

Sell at NPCs or destroy in furnaces. No trash bins.
