« on: October 17, 2011, 04:35:38 pm »
Hi,
if you have a good screenshot taken from the latest PlaneShift release (0.5.x) please post it here. We may in need of good screenshots for press, magazine and web sites. If you want to post weird/funny screenshots please use another thread and not this one.

Well these were taken very recently, but does this collection mean it has to do with items/things added in the o.5 release?

First Person Perspective -- press "M" or use the mouse wheel.

Or: Third Person perspective with edited camera options to zoom out far (instead of into the body).

General suggestion: Write screenshots as PNGs first (/screenshot lossless nogui) and compress the images later. The JPEG compression by CrystalSpace is quite coarse by default, contains rather obvious DCT artefacts.

I still like the "JPEG Optimizer 3.15", formerly from xat.com - but this domain is outdated now.

Its "adaptive quantization" algorithm (MagiCompress™) is quite useful, I never found any freeware with a similar feature. Saved in progressive mode, it creates nearly optimal JPEGs for the web.

A new approach is being developed as JPEGmini.

Link to full size pics: https://picasaweb.google.com/dannaereinor/PlaneShift#

Note: Due to the discussions further in this thread about png/jpg, all my original screenshots are png except one, (5th one with the 3 chars.), and though I posted all as jpg, the png versions are still available if you pm me.

general suggestion: don't use jpeg anymore it's an old format and lossy. These days we have connections fast enough for png.

@ weltall:

1) inconsiderate generalization: would you bet on every person worldwide having a broadband connection?
2) unnecessary accuracy = low efficiency (*)

JPEG as such is still rather convenient, especially for images with limited detail sharpness and color saturation; it just requires a bit experience in optimizing size versus quality loss.

Screenshots made by PlaneShift in JPEG format have a quite low quality (I believe, default quality value is 75 of 100). So it is obviously and objectively recommendable to have PlaneShift save screenshots in lossless PNG first. But for presentation in the World Wide Web, a moderately compressed JPEG (quality 95 .. 90) is still a good compromise, preferably in "progressive encoding", and if available, even with "macroblock-adaptive quantization" (JPEGOpt / JPEGmini); and if you have saturated red or blue areas which start to look fuzzy, you may even try to disable "chroma subsampling" (in JPEGOpt: "Extra color").
_

(*) May I remind you on the "voiceover" requirements? Which combination of consumer soundcard with 16-bit DAC and consumer electret microphone is at all able to record samples in 32 bit depth and 96 kHz spectrum?
