PlaneShift News and Rules / Re: What's your Plane? MyPlane news.

There needs to be more information on the actual site as to what MyPlane actually is. An example profile, explanation of what it is there for, linked list of achievements ect.

It just needs to be more fun to level up really. Then no one would mind how long it took.

As it stands people grind away looking forward to better days when they are maxed.

This point has already been raised with respects to cooking.

The barrier here is reluctance to involve player skill as that's what tends to make things fun. The only other way around it is offering 'team work points' making using all skills in a team like manner more profitable in terms of pp. Community is the only thing that makes MMORPGs fun. The mechanics are usually awful compared to all other games purely because of the restriction in skill required.

General Discussion / Re: Death of an Atheist
« on: January 13, 2009, 08:41:02 am »
Well perhaps Planeshift is just less absolute? The gods have some unknown agenda and agreement in which they involved only the higher level of the Yilakum government because they realised that was a better way of controlling rather than direct intervention? An agenda that if atheism spread among the population would be threatened... Hence the unlikely seeming agreements they have made with each other in an attempt to discourage atheism.

As such the people as influenced by their governors will treat anyone that worships any of the accepted religions as higher than an atheist.

Besides... it is well known that these days politicians that go to church will get a certain religious vote even if its from a different religion.

To what extent are the inhabitants of the Planeshift world forward thinking? To what extent is what they think sought to be controlled by higher powers. Be it mortal or otherwise.

(I'm gonna download me a firefox spell checker... I'm hopeless)  Sorted =)

Maybe we should look at our past?

There was a point where athieism was unthought of. Everyone had to be religeous or was condemed a witch. Albeit it has already been established that this was a different atheism to the PS brand. However, the parrallels still run the same.

You can enforce what characters KNOW through settings but trying to enforce what the BELIEVE is completely irrational. The characters ingame are still people and what it is to be a person is to think outside the box.

Now obviously a character BELIEVING in, and talking about vampires is daft because they dont KNOW anything about them, or bats for that matter. But for them to come up with some concept of a consumer / klyros hybrid that goes round sucking life matter from people... would that be so daft for them to believe? Or at least come up with the imaginary concept of. Along the same lines just because everyone has worshiped the gods for a long time would it be so unreasonable that some spritely young thing would think 'Hey, maybe we DON'T have to worship them?'

An athiest character's beliefs cant be snatched from them through any settings. But the way the world reacts to them can. Prehaps have them treated as they were when our world was more like planeshift, have them burnt on the stake.

And prehaps getting out the death realm wont be easy for them. But in there they can find someone, who knows some, whos brothers best friend knows a way for atheists cheat Dakkru... We've already established she isn't perfect.

General Discussion / Re: Has anyone ever explanied clearly...

Well my reasoning behind it being the mental capacity to push past the feeling of fatigue was based on the fact its improved by increasing WIll, Intellegence and Charisma. The same way physical stamina is increased by the physical stats. That and the fact you collapse.

It could well be that it is the ability to maintain attentiveness and its just that the Devs haven't implemented it properly yet.

As the current mechanics stand I think my theory makes more sense. Not that it matters a massive amount. It achieves the goal of stopping people mining forever and doing nothing else and it doesn't really hinder roleplaying either as if you do get tired and stab yourself your gonna stop digging... Unless you digging yourself away from an Ulbernaught or something... I dunno..

Mental stamina is when the character thinks they can go on no more. An increased Will will give them the mental strength they need to continue up to the point of physical collapse. Any training of the mind in fact will allow them more control over their urges.

Still not an official response but hey. If it makes sense it makes sense.

PvP,PK and Thieving / Re: Thieving..The World according to TeaLeaF®

You guys are limiting too much by mechanics. What if my thief character isn't known as a thief? Will he still be able to be attacked automatically by anyone and everything? What if I am branded a thief? What could possibly stop me stelaing again?

  • Have them 'branded' a thief. That character can then never steal again... the rp reason can be whatever

My adaption meant that if a thief wasn't caught they wouldn't be known as a thief. And in answer to your last question is the part of my quote I highlighted. They could have  a glyph placed in them which reacts to one that is put on locks and kept in the wallets and bags of most travelers. Maybe in there could be an expiration date on this glyph or a particularly difficult quest that has someone disable it. Maybe not. Though it does make sense that after the thief is spotted they would have to be caught and brought to the authorities after the person who caught them trying to steal decided they should be punished or branded.

Everyone could be given a single opportunity to steal. If they are caught, whoever they are stealing from can decide the consequences:
  • Let them get away with a warning
  • Have them punished
  • Have them 'branded' a thief. That character can then never steal again... the rp reason can be whatever

Choosing your victim well then becomes imperative.

Upon their first successful theft their character asks them self is this something they want to do as a career. If they reply yes your scheme then applies.

The game crashes after the load bar that loads the world when you join with a character gets to the end. I have sent the diagnostic file off but its stopping me get ingame which is annoying. The case is the same with 4 different characters so i don't think it's area related.

Windows xp media ed. service pack 2
Radeon x600 (up to date drivers)
Pentium D CPU 3.00 ghz
1gb of RAM

Game is up to date.

I've tried disabling the sound... Didn't help. Just thought I 'd mention that as it was something people used to be told to do.

General Discussion / Re: What do you expect of a thief?(event wide)

I didn't mean to suggest that the outlaws way of doing things was the best or that a firm idea of roleplaying was a bad thing. I was just trying to be liberal minded and wasn't particularly eloquent in expressing myself. I think my main point is finding someone to lead by example in being robbed losing form it as a character. My idea about how to about this may not have been so great.

I was in ToY at one point and can tell you what the problem is straight out. You want only good RPers, and you are semi secret. This means activity within the guild is so low it makes it a bit pointless to be part of it as the point of the guild is having a group of like minded characters to work with. The Outlaws work alot better as they have a lot broader appeal to all different RP styles (some of which you probably don't consider RP at all).

I have an idea though. Make a good guild. I was thinking of joining PlaneShift again and would attempt to set up a guild for you that is bent on 'irradicate the thieves'. The thieves in a final attempt to stop this would rob the guild for all its worth, as that's what they are good at. Some of theses thefts would work and some wouldn't. The guild would lead by example by letting the thieves win now and again and both guilds would grow a healthy RP partnership.

Thats my idea :) tad grand I know but I like to think big.

Wish list / Re: The younger history of Yliakum - Written down in books

Players could do this and copy the book and put it in circulation. Makes sense that someone who was there writes about the event anyway.

Elvi - Leads the guild that made my first ever character what he was.

Drah - The level headed one that kept my faith in the games community at times when I doubted.

Izzabella - Loved her style.

Daehaz - Nice baddie RP that worked well.

Nurahk - Damn nice, intelligent guy.

Lolitra - All though not an amazing amount of time was spent with her, the RPs with her helped build my character.

Noriin, Velh - I found interesting when I dipped back in to planeshift for a month or so.

My first character is on someones list! I'm remembered.  warm fuzzies. Yes I missed people but the truth is I don't care about any of you enough to sit here until I remember  :P.

I play the guitar and hockey. I have no idea what 'Level' I am in either.

Skills aren't THAT subjective. A good swords man will defeat his opponent, a good chef will have his food purchased regularly and a good artist will have his picture bought for 2 million dollars. That's not to say its a good piece of art, but they are a good artist.
