General Discussion / Re: An interesting thought...

In short? There's just no way you could get Planeshift as it is now to run satisfactorily on a tablet or mobile gaming device.  And streamlining the game down in terms of resource requirements would be unfeasible and impractical.

This is true as the game is now, but I think it would be a good idea for someone to put out a "Lite" version for older machines, less powerful notebooks, etc.  When I started playing this game in 2010 I had trouble getting it to run on my laptop that was less than 6 months old at the time.  As a free open source game, it's going to attract players who probably don't necessarily have money to spend on good gaming PCs.  Also, since a lot of the appeal of the game is RP and community (which mostly happens via text/chat), the nice graphics and effects are pleasant but not really necessary or central to the enjoyment of the game.

Art makes up roughly 90% of my installation directory.  A PlaneShift Lite version could just have lower polycount meshes, lower resolution textures, and reduced or removed graphical effects and shaders.  I don't have a lot of experience with modifying meshes, but there is probably a tool in blender for polycount reduction.

A PS-Lite version could easily be a stepping stone toward a tablet/mobile version.

Theseus' Ship: If an old ship is brought back to shore, and every last part of it replaced with new timber, sails, and rigging, is it still the same ship?

I like this question because, in my opinion, it's not about the physical world at all but about the way we as humans perceive and categorize things.  (Also, I just took a few benodryl a while back so forgive me if I don't make any sense.)

The universe doesn't care what is a "ship."  The idea of "ship" is something humans came up with as a shortcut for any number of configurations of wood, nails, sails, etc.  What is "wood"?  It's a broad term for some specific configurations of elements, each of which is just a name for a specific arrangement of protons, neturons, and electrons.  Etc.

So in this case, I think the answer really is "there is no answer."  I would say, yes it is the same ship because when I consider what makes a "ship" I am thinking of the configuration of the pieces, not the pieces themselves.  But that is just a matter of perspective on my part.  If you asked "if you take an important sword and replace the hilt, and then later replace the blade, is it still the same sword?" then I would say no, because in this case I feel that it is the blade which makes the sword.  But that's just the way it's organized in my brain.

You can apply this to humans too.  If I lose a kidney or break a hip and doctors replace it with a new one, I feel that the replacement is part of who I am and the old dead one is not any more.  You can do this with all body parts except the brain.  If you replace my brain, the body is no longer me.  The brain is the "essence" of the person just like the blade is of the sword.

General Discussion / Re: disk in the mail

Any computer modern enough to run PS is going to have enough disk space and internet bandwidth to download it.  It may take a day, but waiting for a hard copy would take even longer.

Hard copies make sense for operating systems and offline tools, but I don't see any reason to pay for a CD when any computer that can play the game can download it for free.

You are not the first to think about making robe variations tman, and you won't be the last. The last word I got on the topic was the desired way to do this was with post processing. The same way that hair colour starts with one base image and 'shaders' change the colour based on character settings. My understanding is this would be less resources intensive than having potentially 100s of more individual textures/meshes loaded by the game each time you log in.

I see what you're saying about the efficiency, but these 6 textures combined, when zipped, only take up 976 KB.  So, if colors were added for all currently available robes, it would add roughly 7 MB to the download, which is already around 1 GB.  That's an increase of less than 1 percent, and it would more than double the body customizations available to the player (right now we only have normal, LA, MA, HA, and one robe).

And of course, if there ever comes a time when PS can change the colors of clothing arbitrarily (which sounds like a long way off), they can always be deleted.

Newbie Help (Start Here) / Re: Guildhouses?
« on: August 13, 2014, 07:53:33 am »
I'm just saying that, according to the PS home page there are only 32 guilds in existence with enough members to buy a house under the current rules.  Some of those guilds are 9 years old with only a dozen or so members.  I think there are enough guildhouses already in the game to accommodate every eligible active guild, if only the inactive ones were taken away by a dev.

And before anyone calls me biased, I'm not even in a guild.  I'm just going by what seems to be the best option for the game in general.

Uhh... what?

Are you suggesting we ICly make friends with inactive players/guilds?  I think the "inactive" part might make that kinda difficult...

I know it's been talked about before, but what about guild houses from older guilds that are no longer active?  I walk around seeing signs for many guilds I've never heard of.

In fact, it seems like every guild in the game with active players now could have their own guildhouse if they used a renting system instead of permanent purchasing.

Thanks for the tip.  I was going off the color of the glyphs in game (look white with a blueish tint, and a dark blue outline) because I've never really seen azure outside of PS. :P

General Discussion / Re: Some thoughts about gm led events.

That's the problem with using a number system without clearly defining the scale.  On one hand, a 60% is a failing grade if you're coming from an academic setting.  On the other hand, on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being very bad, 10 being very good, and 5 being average, 6 is a positive score.

The scale is pretty meaningless in my opinion because different numbers mean different things to everyone.  So I think people shouldn't put emphasis on the score and instead focus on the comments.

Regardless of peoples' scores, we're all glad for GM events.

I've always thought that a lot could be done in terms of character customization just be reusing and editing existing artwork.  So, I decided to to try my hand at making custom colored robes for each Way.  Here's what I ended up with.

Azure:

Dark:

Red:

Blue:

Brown:

Crystal:

If people like these, I can do more for the other races.  I can also send people the .dds files if they want.

If I may ask, what tool do you use to work with .dds files?

EDIT: Found it.  For anyone else who's curious, there is a .dds plugin for GIMP which can be found here: https://code.google.com/p/gimp-dds/

I'm not against the idea as a whole, but I really don't like the name.  It's just too obviously ever so slightly different than pizza but still means pizza.  "Flat pie" or something would work better in my opinion.

Indeed but release could be a year away. that is a whole lot of stored chests.

Exactly.  I have several dozen in my storage and I've only been collecting them for a couple days.  I'm sure there are people with hundreds.

And, from what I understand, it hasn't been released yet because of compiling errors?  So, there's no way of knowing when it'll be fixed.

Edit:  Also, I'm not envisioning giving a chest to someone, waiting there while they lockpick it, and then them giving it back.  That would take forever.  I'm picturing people trading the GM a chest and some predefined fee (1000 tria or something) and they trade back a chest of the same type but without a lock.  This would go much faster and keep the line moving.  GMs can spawn and delete items at will, right?

Also, I imagine the lines would be smaller when you consider that some people are purposely stocking up locked chests to raise their lockpicking when its released, not necessarily for what is inside.

Wish list / GM Lockbreaker Event
« on: August 04, 2014, 12:19:06 am »
So, from what I understand, the game currently has a whole bunch of locked chests but no way to unlock them.  So, if lockpicking is a long way off, it would be cool if there was some other way for people to open their chests.

I know GMs sometimes show up as merchants to sell or auction items that can't normally be purchased by players.  What about an outlaw GM hiding out in the sewers or in Oja or something, who will unlock a player's locked chests for a fee?  There could be a limit of one chest per person, or require each player to perform some task per chest, or something along those lines, to prevent a huge line or overcrowding.
