Constant temp lockups

every now and then the client locks up for long amounts of time.  The rest of the time it runs smoothly.  I have back ground loading set to models and the loader cash turned on.

any ideas about settings?

Sounds like shaders recompiling to me. You could try deleting your shadercache (It's in C:\Users\YourUser\AppData\Roaming\PlaneShift).
Then they should compile again the next time you run your client and hopefully from then on your stutters will be gone.

I deleted the shadercashe, did not seem to help, still getting what seems to be random temp lockups, like its trying to load a model or something? Yet I thought I had the option set to preload all the models; Isn't that what background loading is?

nope, that's just the opposite - bg loading wil load modes (chars) while you play...

you could also try unchecking camera collision - helped a bit with my machine. I am very low on RAM; so I need as few lag as possible...

After a long talk in the IRC chat room, It would seem like my only option is to turn everything down and off...

Is there any way to revert PS back to the old shader/graphic system that existed before the requirements where raised?  Maybe  revert to the old shader? - I still have some of the files from the 4.0 days, Are they interchangeable?

you can use rlcompat if you build the client yourself but you'll have various graphical glitches

a few things I found interesting last night when I turned everything down.

the game ran very smoothly execpt for what seem to be random temp lockups - that normally where not as long as they where before

when the game did lock up, my system resources where only being used at about 50% save for the processor witch was doing it's best to stay at 100% usage
when the game was not locked up it was at an average of 50%-60%

and this is with a P4 1.7 ghz, 1 gig ram, 512 mb nvida (at leaset i think its an nvida, I will need to check on that) graphic card

So it would seem that somthing is takeing forever to process and is locking up the game to do so

Interesting.

Recently we closed a bugtracker task because it did not happen anymore.

Now tell us more:

- What do you do when it happens (walk, turn, being close to frequented places)?
- How often does it happen, and how regularly?
- Does it happen even when you don't move, and are away from usually frequented places, or only when items/avatars come into viewing range?

A P4 1.7 GHz is not a multi-core CPU, I believe. So it is well possible that loading textures from a compressed ZIP archive may take a good amount of CPU power.

With a dual-core or even a quad-core processor, I have lockups too, but they don't stress the CPU a lot, instead I can report a high I/O transfer rate, and I can almost prove that it is related to loading avatars and their altered skins (for armors). So this is not related to the above posted bugtracker task.

no, P4 is not multi core, but i bet if you right clicked ps, then you could run it on only one core?

when i turned the settings down, I notice a small lockup when I turned to look at a torch on the cliff at the BD. 

I decided to kill my self and go throught the death realm and had no issues, I also did not meet anyone there.

Then I came back to the world of the liveing and really started temp locking up and crashing for the frist 5 loads of the client.  (I'm a dwarf and as such poped up at harn's place and there where one or two people on screen.)

Another side note: when ever I delete the shadercashe, it takes longer for my charater to load at the selection screen, maby 20 to 30 seconds longer...

But if the preloading of models is broaken, that would most likely be the issue.  Back in the 4.0 days the only reason for this behavior was that the client was alwasy trying to load models.

Hi,
I also get similar lockups. They seem to occur at specific and random (ie depend on the state of the world at that time) points, and mostly occur in bursts of three or four (ie, lock for 8 secs, 2 secs ok, lock for 8 secs, 2 secs ok, lock for 8 secs, then ok).
I think it is to do with model loading, for example, when I leave the Laanx Dungeon, on the staircase, the game will freeze as described, and the Grendol will send me to DR. I have only escaped the Grendol once, but only because he was busy with another player. This has happened 3 times now, I expect it to happen.
My PC is P4 3GHz, XP, 1.5GB RAM, ATI x1650 GFX (problem still happens with latest drivers and ATI9600pro and NVidea 5200), so it is within spec.
I have tried deleting the shader cache, and re-installing PS from scratch (and lost my quest logs :-( ), and currently running at 800x600 with all settings at medium or low. There is no apparent difference between 800x600 & 1024x768.
Just recently, the last week, the problem has got worse, I attacked a trepor near the Green Ruins, realised I could not kill it (weak or what!) then ran. The Trepor chased me right back to the Hydlaa portal, the freeze as described occured five times, each time the Trepor overtook me! once reducing my life to almost zero.
The freezes seem to preceed the appearnce of an NPC, I think.
I did not have this problem this time last year, what ever version that was.

Just a quick check - is VBO turned on?  I had a similar problem with the pause when I turned it on and it disappeared again when turned back off.  I do have an NVida card on that pc.

on or off, dose not make that much difference, but strangely most of the time having it turned on seems to make the game run smoother when it is not crashing or locking up.

looking in console whenever I get this freeze, I see the following: -

or variations on this theme.
I have previously deleted the shadercache but this occurs on entering a new sector (normally covered by the loading screen) or the first time each lighting change occurs due to time ingame.

is this the same that you are seeing Tontow?

For me, when the "Freezes" occur, there is _nothing_ printed out in the console!
