OSX 10.5.6 (intel) Rendering issue? (PS 0.4.03)
« on: December 16, 2008, 09:50:55 am »
Apple have recently released an update to MacOSX, version 10.5.6.  Is anybody else having problems using 10.5.6?

Since applying the OSX update, my psclient is not working correctly.  For example,  the black-gray gradient background to speech bubbles is not drawing across the entire speech bubble, and text is not rendering correctly.

The attached image shows missing letters, and parts of letters, both in the red notice text (missing parts of 'e', and the 'l' is almost entirely gone), and in the chat window which also has problems with it's text rendering.

Any thoughts?

E.

Hi Caarrie,

Thanks for replying.  It's useful to know that 10.5.6 is working correctly for you.

I guess it could be something to do with my installation, or possibly even the fonts/drivers in use at this end.

The following are my System stats,
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed: 2.5 GHz
      Number Of Processors: 1
      Model Name: MacBook Pro (4,1)
      Memory: 4 GB
      Chipset Model: GeForce 8600M GT
      VRAM (Total): 512 MB
          Resolution: 1440 x 900
ProductVersion:   10.5.6

I've done a little investigating to see if I can give a better idea of the problem.

I have reinstalled and updated a fresh copy of PS 0.4.03 and done a little diffing between my old install and the new one.  There were only a few differences in the file data (listed below)

Interestingly enough, if I remove my planeshift.cfg file from ~/Library/Application Support/Planeshift/ and launch psclient, my fonts render OK.  When I restart planeshift, using the auto-generated planeshift.cfg file, the font spacing is all messed up.

... So.. my first-cut workaround seems to be to delete my planeshift.cfg file before running... kinda annoying..

Meh, almost enough to drive oneself back to Linux..

I also am running a mac 10.5.6 2.4 GHz 4 GB GeForce 8600m GT and am having the same font problem.  I did not have as much success by deleting the config file though.

I think I had this issue also, but only when I started with a fresh config.
I renamed my whole planeshift folder in ~/library/application data/planeshift to planeshift-backup

After that I restored my old configuration, and the font size was alright again.
I can try to recreate the issue, but I have no clue where to find the actual font settings, to compare them.

I dont think there is a setting for that specific font [that location of where it appears ingame]

Just quickly checked, I was wrong.. I don't have it (it was a while ago I did it)

But only thing that happens is that my fonts in chat are pretty big, while the tabs are very small.
But I see resizing the chat menu fixes that (make it a little larger).

I have this same issue and it's really, really bad.  It's extremely difficult for me to read things because so much of the letters are cut off.

I have had the same issue on a Powerbook G4 running Tiger, on a 15" Macbook Pro 2.8Ghz running 10.5.5 and 10.5.6.  I have had it on an MBP 17" 2.93, and currently on an MBP 17" 3.06 running 10.5.8.

No matter if I fresh install everything including the OS, I can't get it to go away.

There is actually one other game I have seen this with, also an online game, it's called Deliantra and it's the exact same text issue.  As if one or both edges of each letter is chopped off.

I have had this problem too. I'm running a 10.5.8 Intel Mac Mini on Leopard. Also, when coming out of the mines, sewers, tunnels or any other major terrain change, it seems to go away from my. If I spin, it sticks. It's weird. If i ignore it, I end up going to the Death Realm.

This is a known issue affecting Leopard versions 10.5.6+. It is fixed in Snow Leopard and will also be fixed for Leopard in the next release of PS. There is no workaround short of upgrading to 10.6.

well, thought spamming here would be preferable to spamming the 0.5 prerelease thread,

thanks for keeping us up to date on the mac front, khaki!
