Forum and Website Discussions / On Preventing Repeats
« on: July 23, 2008, 01:18:39 am »
On the recent rash of "let's be nice on the forums" threads, I've made an observation. Many of the offending mosts are done to people who utterly failed to do a search. Perhaps, by lessening the load of 'mobs imperv' threads, a lot of the 'people are nasty' problems will be gone. So, this is my suggestion:

There is a system that prevents people from PMing until they make 10 non-spam posts. Well, what if, following this vein, every time someone with under 10 posts tries to write something, the page redirects. It redirects to a page that asks if the person making the post used the search engine for posts on the same topic, and maybe contains a link to the advanced search page. Then, the poster has to enter their password, at which point the post is posted. It won't eliminate all of them, but it will reduce a fair amount of repeats.

In-Game Roleplay Events / Singles Night at Kada-Els
« on: July 05, 2008, 01:26:33 pm »
An enkidukai posts a message on the door to Kada-Els:

Are you tired of passing out drunk onto the shoulder of destiny? Why not get something physical instead? Bored wandering the wilderness with the bandits chasing you as your only companions? Tired of being the only single person at your friends' weddings? Is the warmest relationship in your life that with your torch? Well, look no further! Tomorrow is Singles Night! Come alone, or bring friends, and meet people interested in striking up a relationship! A few Bards will be present to help keep the mood, and there will be lots of free beer and food! Come, and finally meet someone that can enjoy your companionship!

And if it comes to that, the Brazen Bards can also handle marriages...

[This event will happen on Tuesday, the 8th. Serq, and other Brazen Bards that can make it will hit the scene at about 1500-1600 GMT. We'll be managing it and distributing the food. It is a chance to meet someone in game, make some friendships, and maybe even find new people to rp with. Of course married, or dating people can come and enjoy the scene. Hope to meet you there!]

Guides and Tutorials / Advisors, Advising, and Advice
« on: June 23, 2008, 01:11:11 am »
There really isn't a clear definition of advising, its rules, or its purpose. We'll try to form up one here, both for advisors, and those seeking advice. This is my definition, as close as it gets:
An Advisor is there to render the game playable for those asking questions. When a question does not have to be answered for the game to be enjoyed, that question is most likely either a spoiler, or should be asked to players in-game.

But the most important thing to start with is the act of asking for help. Never type unhelpful, rude, or obnoxious things. We understand that the tutorial can be annoying and difficult. Some NPCs don't respond to requests for help. But please, polite and descriptive requests will only benefit you.

For example, don't say:
"Help!"
"WTF!"
"Harnquist sucks!"
"I'm lost"
"These stupid NPCs"
"I'm in hell!"

Instead say:
"Excuse me, I seem to have gotten stuck in the tutorial. Allelia wil only repeat the phrase "About X," and Neave doesn't understand me. What should I say and do?"
"I seem to have gotten lost in the death realm, and no players will help me out. Can someone show me the way?"

Hopefully, any advisors on will try to remedy your situation. Don't request obvious spoilers, only things you need solved for the game to be playable.

Once you know your way around, and want to help out a little yourself, it is time to become an advisor. Yes, you can become an advisor! Everyone can, if they are willing! First, to become one, you must make sure that you are ready, after fulfilling the fact that you must have been in-game for 30 real time hours before you can start.

Checklist to activate advisor mode
-Are you willing to help?
-Are you sure you aren't busy doing activities that might kill you or mess you up if you are advising?
-Do you have the time to answer extended questions?
-Do you have a positive attitude?

With all of those checked off, it is time. Type /advisormode on and wait.

After a while, someone will need help. About 75% of requests involve tutorials and NPCs. Let's asume your help window starts flashing. You see this message:

Xyvaskordia: I seem to have gotten lost in the death realm, and no players will help me out. Can someone show me the way?

You want to answer this question. Type /advice Xyvaskordia If no one will lead you out, I will gladly show you myself. Meet me in the beginning of the Death Realm in 4 minutes, please.

Remember, if you don't want to take a request, no one is making you. You can let someone else handle them.

Mechanics of the Help window
To talk to someone on the help window, everytime you must type /advice Xyvaskordia [message] out. Advice is anonymous to the question seekers, but other advisors can see it. When someone posts a question that is unanswered, once a minute it will repeat. After 3 repeats, in your system window, you will see this message: Xyvaskordia's messenger taps his foot impatiently. That will repeat once every 2 minutes infinitely. After you claim a session, and you don't answer the last reply of seeker (Common if they type thank you after your last advice), it will repeat the message 3 times, then after 5 minutes terminate the session. Also, typing /advisor_list will show you if you are advising alone, or if multible people are advising.

There are some rules, though, that must be followed.

==Be Polite==
Let's say Xyvaskordia says: I need help Harn or whatever is stupid
Don't say /advice Xyvaskordia Tell why u noob
Try saying /advice Xyvaskordia In what aspect are you having troubles with him?

==Don't ignore sessions you've already taken==
If someone has a question you answer, then they hit you with a really crappy question that will take forever to explain, well, then, you've already obligated yourself to helping them. Finish the job. It is better to answer one players question very well than to half-answer 5 askers.

==GMs are not advising for you==
While GMs will pay attention to what you say, to make sure you aren't screwing up any seekers and to help consider any future applications to the GM team, they aren't there to do your job. Don't ask for their help in advising unless you really need it, such as if the players are stuck, or are talking to a very buggy NPC that you can't untangle the phrasing to. In fact, GMs will force advisors that give bad, misleading, or spoilerish advice to step down, and ban them from advising if they repeatedly do it.

==Help someone if no one else does==
If you check back and see no one has explained the tutorial to someone yet, try to help them. It sucks waiting half an hour for a game making request.

==Don't offer spoilers==
It isn't your job to corrupt quest takers. That job belongs to their guild mates. If they are stuck, and can't find this NPC, or that item, try this: /advice Xyvaskordia Try asking the NPC who told you to find X, and see what they know.

==You can't help everyone==
Sometimes people get lost in the outer bronze doors, or the Oja road, or wherever. If you can get them to tell you where they are, you can lead them back to civilization. But GMs can't teleport you to their location, or teleport them to Hydlaa. You must do it yourself. And if you can't find them, then apologize, and tell them that they must find and follow another player.

Use links to helpful sites
If you can't help them, link them to the website and this forum, particularly the tutorial walkthrough and the guides section. Use these when you try to troubleshoot NPC dialouge through the seeker, and link to them if you can't get it right.

==Don't give poor advice==
If you don't know the answer to a question, don't take the session, even if no one else does. The person asking will view your advice as a sages, and follow it exactly (unless they don't). If you don't know, don't answer, or if it is in a session that continued, admit you don't know, or even ask your guildies if they know.

Spoilers in Advice
Never give the following as advice:
-NPC Locations (Besides Harn, Allelia, Brado, and Trasok, the 4 most important NPCs)
-Stats and Trainers
-Quest information
-Mine Locations
-Advanced Stats such as Crafting and Metallurgy

Advising is to help stuck people. If it is advanced or that highly specific, they should be asking characters in game. They should be using roleplay to find out where a mine is, not an OOC help window. You are there to give solutions to tutorials, explain OOC concepts such as pp and exp, and you can explain basic skills and training windows. Usually you won't need to go that far. Players advanced enough to train crafting have guild members to teach them. Your job is to help assimilate new players into the game mechanics, answer some questions about basic targeting, NPC chatting, and that there are no maps implemented yet.

When you are done advising, when you've had enough, type /advisormode off and pat yourself on the back for a job well done. Unless you didn't.

An Extended Example
/advisormode on
Xyvaskordia's messenger taps his foot impatiently
Xyvaskordia: Help me!
/advice Xyvaskordia With what do you need help?
Xyvaskordia: Harnquist can't understand me!
/advice Xyvaskordia What are you trying to tell him or ask him?
Xyvaskordia: I want a quest!
/advice Xyvaskordia Try typing "Give me a quest."
Xyvaskordia: It worked!
Xyvaskordia: Thanks
Xyvaskordia previously asked "Thanks"
Xyvaskordia: Where can I get a map of Yliakum?
/advice Xyvaskordia I'm sorry, but maps have not yet been implemented. Try asking fellow players for directions. The library sells some maps that you can create yourself, if you want them.
Xyvaskordia: Oh
Xyvaskordia: Thanks
Xyvaskordia previously asked "Thanks"
Xyvaskordia previously asked "Thanks"
Xyvaskordia previously asked "Thanks"
Your session with Xyvaskordia has timed out
/advisormode off

The Tutorial: Allelia
Xyvaskordia: Allelia keeps repeating the phrase 'about x' but she doesn't understand me is there anyone out there help me
/advice Xyvaskordia Try talking to Neave, near the furnace.
Xyvaskordia: I talked to her a while, but she doesn't understand me now either.
/advice Xyvaskordia You need to get the blacksmithing book back from Allelia. Make sure you read what NPCs say carefully.
Xyvaskordia: Allelia won't give it to me.
At this point, you won't be able to help Xyvaskordia, because he ether isn't doing exactly as you say, or the npcs are buggy, or something else is going on. Now it is time to give him advanced help.
/advice Xyvaskordia Try using the Tutorial Walkthrough, on the official forums. Here is the URL: http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=30436.0 If that doesn't work, contact a gm, by using '/who game', then using '/tell' to ask them for help. Be very polite and descriptive with them. Good luck!

Tutorial End
Xyvaskordia: The last NPC doesn't understand me
/advice Xyvaskordia Give him the 3 items the other npcs gave you. Right click him, select 'give', then trade them one at a time.
Xyvaskordia: I already did he won't teleport me!?!
/advice Xyvaskordia Did you finish the conversation after giving him the items?
Xyvaskordia: Yes, but it crashed before he teleported me
/advice Xyvaskordia Use '/who game' to find a game master. Then use '/tell' to ask them to teleport you out of the tutorial. Be very polite and descriptive with them. Good luck!

Another Example: Spoilers
Xyvaskordia: Where can I find Jefecra? I need him for a quest.
Giving the exact location of Jefecra is a spoiler, especially because they need him for a quest. If they need an NPC to train a basic skill or stat, you can give them the general location, such as 'Hydlaa Plaza,' or 'Ojaveda,' without saying anything more specific. But never give them locations for quests.
/advice Xyvaskordia Unfortunately, I cannot tell you the location of NPCs. Try talking to the NPC who told you to find Jefecra, and ask where to find him.
Xyvaskordia: Oh, sorry

The Advising Window isn't complete yet! Check the Bugtracker here to see what is currently being upgraded upon!

[I need to confirm what qualifies advice as a spoiler. I'm not sure. Comments and additions are appreciated.]

Wish list / Book Memory
« on: March 28, 2008, 12:12:28 am »
I conducted a search but found nothing similar.

My Wish is for enhanced book Memory. I love the fact that you can copy and paste books. You can make an instruction manual, or rule books, or even tickets for a guild event. But, there is a limit on the length of book you can enter... 3000 characters is the maximum. Assuming there is an average of 6 letters per word, that's 500 words, or 1 page on microsoft word. For writing a real story, a real newspaper, a real biography, you're going to have more length than that. 3000 characters is the introduction of more lengthy stories, and if a lot of people like your story, and are actually willing to pay a lot for books (which promotes more people to write books, creating a more player-created environment), you are going to find out that you can't replicate your books if they are too long. It's possible to break down the books into serials, but isn't that making things way more complicated? Now everyone needs to buy 5 books for your one story, and you need to carry a load of books around in case someone wants one story!

What about newspapers? I could write one in-depth article about the Gurgontid Blockade that everyone is talking about, but wait, that article hit the 3000 limit! What about the rest of the paper?

My proposal is that these books are saved to the computer that creates them, and then the client only deals with the memory load caused by additional books. Or is it already like that? Why is the limit established then? I've seen character descriptions way longer than any book. And those are life stories, not what you would know by glancing at them! A limit could be placed on outer appearence and description, and all those biographies can be placed into greater memory capacity books!

But right now, to document a detailed RP, to tell a story, to add depth to the world, that can be done, it just can't be distributed, shared with many people, sold, or read. Oh sure, I could keep one long copy and pass it around then demand it back. Cila did that with the old Yliakum Herald in September. Spending time waiting for someone to finish so someone else could read it, he spent hours and made only 1000 trias as compensation, yet everyone wanted to buy one. (In the end someone stole the copy, anyways.)

So please, could some memory be added to book length? Or am I just ignorant? Is there a way to increase it?

Thanks for reading!

General Discussion / I'm back!
« on: March 11, 2008, 12:39:01 am »
The last time I logged in was on December 19th. It's been a while. I kept up with the forums and everything when I had a chance. Why did I leave? I was simply busy, with work and my activities. Yesterday I checked the forums, and it was the first I'd heard about .4. I got it working, and logged in for 20 minutes tonight.

It's interesting to log in after a long vacancy, if you haven't experienced it yet. Typing in /who reveals few familiar names. Those familiar names are usually those long running players that you've walked past a few times, and maybe shared a joke or two with. Most of the list I had never seen. It was also a shock to find Hydlaa empty. I left when gold was still the main resource for many people, and Hydlaa always used to have a few people strolling about. I saw 3 total, and 2 were smelting. A friend was one of these strollers, and he explained a few of the changes, especially to the economy.

All of this is very impressive to me. It only takes a few minutes to be reminded of why I love PlaneShift, with the changing community, the cycles of old and new, the changes, and the experiences. With luck, I will be able to log in regularly. And I made up a story of where I spent my time, if you need to know so badly. When I examine the new book functions, I may be able to start churning out books from my small guild, if any of the members log back in soon. I look forward to seeing you all!

Forum and Website Discussions / Preventing some repeats

A lot of newbies spend a lot of time asking specific things about the tutorial, and the reply is always a link to the tutorial guide, and then the board is locked. To avoid some of these, can someone create a sticky at the top of the newbie page with the tutorial guide where it is easy for newbies to find? It might cut down on the 2+ posts a week asking what to say.

Guilds Forum / [Guild] Brazen Bards
« on: November 25, 2007, 12:29:20 pm »
You walk past Kada-Els, walking to Harnquist to sell your wares. Suddenly, a strange sound floats through the door. Peering in, you see a tall Enkidukai sturmming a crude object, made of wood and some kind of thin rope streched accross it. Sound issues from it. You inquire its identity, and the bard relpies. It is a lute. The bar is empty except for a couple on the other side. The bard looks at you, and asks if you would like to hear a song. You agree, and drop a few trias into a sack next to him.

There once was a guild of hired swords,
all criminals, warriors, peasants, and lords.
They protected the gold fields, worked with the gaurd,
ate, drank, gambled, lived life too hard.
The Mercenaries grew, and there were good times,
but if they had lasted, I could speak no rhymes,
for the leaders got sick, poisoned by a cult,
became obessed to stop them, their only fault.
Many left, wise Malanka, strong Cigiley, brave Kutoe,
and this old jester took the only job he could ever know.
So, please, listen, drink, be merry, have your fun,
parties, marriage, every occasion, all weather and sun.
Us bards are ready, just track us down.
Just come into a bar, we'll reverse that frown.

[Well, I've finally gotten around to making this guild. With the help of Tuxide and Jaycol, I got it going. I figured I would rather post here than running to Harn's shouting 'OMG new guild join or you are a n00b!!!!11!' Everything below is mostly OOC.]

Purpose:
We're a smallish guild, just out to add some depth. I figured there weren't enough Occupation Guilds, and I wanted to see one about Bards. Most of the 'Members' are probably going to be Alts, since this is still a younger guild, and not everyone wants to throw their main character into a new career path. But do spare some alts if you want. We do minor guild rp's and maybe later, some player events. A newsletter may start up.

But the main reason for starting this guild is to keep boring grinds more exciting. It's more fun to hear a story or song or read poetry whiling mining than to just mash the /mine platinum hotkey all day.

Rules
Try to stay in-character all the time. Don't misbehave to other players. Follow the game's rules

Newbie Policy
We won't get many newbies, as they usually want to smash and crush and kill and use magic. But if they need help, we'll aid them. Or try to.

Ranks
New Hiree: You are new to the guild. Generally, if you know how to play well, you will be promoted. Generally, I'll also test your integrity. Not everyone is decent, unfortunately, and I'll weed out those that just aren't cut out for this job. Being able to kill a trepor is reason to move on.

Apprentice: Now you get training on becoming a Bard. I'll give lessons, as high higher members.

Now you choose a profession. You can also change if you get tired of your position.

Skald: This a more warrior oriented Bard. I'll assume most people will join this one. Skalds will generally be more common in the arena, telling jokes and tales about the monsters they kill

Tale Tattler: Hang out and tell stories.  Another common one, although it requires more dedication to write interesting stories

Jester: Shorter stories and jokes. If you're funny, you'll get this slot.

Minstrel: Songs and poetry, more often. More likely the tavern than mining, but destination isn't terribly important!

Newspaper Official: Currently non-existant, as there is no newspaper. But eventually this will be more important

Public Relations Officer: Teacher to apprentices, second to the Leader, and in charge when the leader is absent!

Master Bard: Thats me!

In conclusion:
I'll accept you if you're willing. There aren't many set goals yet, and I'm just building up a reputation telling stories while mining. With more people comes more responsibility, so this board may yet see change. No, we don't constantly plot against other guilds, we make grinding less of a grind, and more of a pleasant tickling sensation. If you're interested, please contact me. If not, then I hope we brighten your day sometime!

General Discussion / Tuturial
« on: October 14, 2007, 12:45:06 pm »
I logged in as my brother's account to test the death penalty , but I started out in this walled off tuturial thing. It was brilliant. It is totally capable of teaching noobs everything, from moving, talking, basic skills, and combat. It could use some work, but it was extremely awesome. Good job!  \\o//

In-Game Roleplay Events / Arena Brawl
« on: September 23, 2007, 03:32:52 pm »
Yes, another duel tournament. This one will be a little different, though. Rather than fantastic prizes, it will be cheap, hopefully large, and more emphasis on fun. This one will be organized by The Mercenaries Guild.

As mercenaries, we aren't organized by nature, so our events are generally more brawlish. These will take place in the Daylo Room of the Arena. Spectators can watch in the stands over the room.

The first event is 1 on 1 battles, tournament style. To the death or yielding. Leaving the arena room is counted as yielding. It will progress until semi-finals and finals. The two losers of semi-finals will duel for third place after the duel for first and second.

The second event is an all-in melee. All participants fight at the same time, in the same room. They can team up on tough opponents. The last one standing in the arena (Running = disqualification) is the victor.

Tickets for spectating are sold for 250 trias, and this covers both events. It costs 250 trias to participate in one event. Also, we will  taking bets, and people will walk the stands selling beer, meat, apples, bread, fish, and other things.

Rules:
1. Battles are to the death, yield, or exit of duel room.
2. No physical help from the stands at all, in healing, magic, or other ways.
3. A person that leaves the bleachers into the fight will be killed or evicted from the duel.
4. No potions or items during the course of battle.
5. All armor, magic, skill, and weapons are allowed.
6. Team work is allowed during the brawl, but there will only be one winner. If you don't feel well killing a friend, let someone else do it.

It will take place at 4 pm GMT, on Sunday, October 7th, unless there are too few signed up. To sign up, post here, or tell me, Vinculus, Cedesit, or Mawdryn. Prizes are still being debated.

*edit:* Cancelled, due to lack of sign-ups. Oh well.

« on: September 14, 2007, 11:59:36 pm »
