Preventing some repeats
« on: December 31, 2007, 01:34:23 am »
A lot of newbies spend a lot of time asking specific things about the tutorial, and the reply is always a link to the tutorial guide, and then the board is locked. To avoid some of these, can someone create a sticky at the top of the newbie page with the tutorial guide where it is easy for newbies to find? It might cut down on the 2+ posts a week asking what to say.
Have you told a Daylo 'I hate you' yet today? Do it. You'll get teleported to another area!

Here is a link to the tutorial guide, for convenience...and what the hell, let's lock this thread anyways, just for kicks :P

it's stickied in the guides and tutorials sub board, which is a board of the newbie section.

the problem is not where it's at, the problem is that people are naturally lazy.  and all the stickies in the world won't help, as they'll still create new threads.

it's not that hard for us to simply lock the thread with a link to it.  those locked threads are removed after a few days, so its not like they clutter up the lace.

I disagree completely, that's kind've like saying the tutorial world shouldn't exist because people are too lazy to read the player's guide.  I don't know if you actually play the game, but it does cut down on the stupid questions asked on the advisor channel.  The purpose of the walkthrough is to cut down on the stupid questions here, but it doesn't help if only the advisors and dedicated players know where it is.

The sole purpose of the walkthrough is to compensate for the in-game walkthrough's flaws, until that one is so perfect we can ban anyone who doesn't understand it straight-away for being silly.
We're not evil. We're simply amazing.

Here is a thought, since the tutorial is already somewhat out of context have one of the responses to "help" asked of the npcs open the forum walk-through in the default browser. At the very least you could display the url even without adding functionality. It ought to be fairly trivial to put a redirect in your apache configuration but even if your host won't allow it you can use tinurl.com to reduce the length of the address. It is not too bad as it is.
