Fan Art / Small 1x1 of Shading
« on: February 23, 2007, 09:24:44 am »
A good year ago, I decided to pick up my mouse and try myself at coloring some of the stunning lineart of the Great Fan-Fan Art Project. Within this year I've gone through about every single mistake and pitfall there could be, until I finally got myself to a level at which I can be at least somewhat satisfied. So in order to encourage more people to follow the way of the mouse (Couldn't resist) I've decided that'll do my best to share my techniques, dirty little tricks and exploits of common sense in the field of Coloring and Shading. So without much more nonsense I'll start ahead.

Lesson 1: Shading Anime-Style Hair
Description: As I always prefer to build the roof first, my first lesson is going to cover the field of shading Anime Style hair.
Difficulty: Intermediate

(More to follow soon(tm))

Should you have any problems with following my guidelines, or should you find any mistakes/things that could be made better, hesitate no longer, just go right ahead and ask/hit me with a brick.

Edit: Yeah, ... I'm aware of the typos ;_;

Edit:
By the way, if someone is interested I might give out the template for the semi background.

Development Deliberation / A little note
« on: July 11, 2006, 03:46:21 am »
Recently the CVS infrastructure of SourceForge.net has been significantly changed, following this developement the hostname of the CVS server was changed from cvs.sourceforge.net to [PROJECTNAME].cvs.sourceforge.net. So a CVS login for Cal3d would look like this cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@cal3d.cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/cal3d login.

The only reason I mention this is that I think the build guides on laanx.fragnetics.com should be adjusted to this change.

Edit: More inforrmation can be found here

Much to my disgust I had to see that pressing right shift does not help at all with closed doors.

Guilds Forum / A few thoughts on the Guild-system
« on: April 13, 2006, 08:57:04 am »
((I am not sure wether this is supposed to be in Guilds Forum or Wishlist, so I will leave this to the first Moderator who passes by to decide))

As far as I can see, a contigent of good (in sense of well made) guilds could be a great basis for Roleplay. (No, not only roleplay events) However the current set of guilds is a shame. The guild tag being the only connection between members. The only goal to get the members to powerlevel as fast and as much as possible, just to be able to shun other guilds, and to \"p4\\/\\/n\" in guildwars.

Guilds tend to jealously poke pointy sticks at any idea done by another guild. One guild says \"We were here for hundrets of years\", the next brags that they were there since the creation of the lemnurs by Laanx, the following one goes around saying that they were before Laanx or Talad, or even before the gods existed. The only motor of these guilds being \"betta\" then the others, if not being \"da Best!ZOMG\". \"Dragons are cool! Our Guild is about Dragons, so that we are cool, who cares about settings?\"...

Even with guilds getting hundrets of members, no guild ever took a real position of power. Usually based on reasons like massrecruit and Quality over Quantity, Powerlevellers first Roleplayers maybe afterwards. There shouldn\'t have been the need to create a guild just to elude guild invites.

To me it appeals to be obvious, that players tend to be incapable of creating guilds themselves. Not able to figure out that a guild is more than a fancy name, 20000 Trias and a bad excuse of a backgroundstory.

What I want to say, currently guilds are plainly farts in the wind, due to the sheer ammount of little guilds, and people scattered around, often without any ammount of guidance, the biggest thing involving interguild work was a retarded spell, and a certain raid on Bodacher\'s store, of which nothing has ever been heard.

Could it be different? Of course it could.

A very small ammount of guilds, probably GM assisted (and monitored), which, however are more than just name tags. Oposing guilds should be oposing each other, from the smallest newcomer to the very leader. People should _join_ these guilds, instead of getting invited. The \"Yes/No\" Question should lie in the hand of the guild not of the \"to-be\" Member.

This would result in a few powerful and influencing guilds, instead of a manyfold of guilds about the wierdest things, while the really important points.

Said guilds shouldnt be the usual coal copied \"Good Aligned\" or \"Evil Aligned\" guilds, no rather they should be what the term \"guild\" actually means. Gatherings of Specialists and tradesmen. Yes a kind of \"Warriors Guild\" or \"Mages Guild\" could, no should, exist, but with the reason to gather said specialists. A Miner\'s guild (Actually there has been an totaly awesome initiative into that direction lately), probably several trader\'s guilds. But not the freaking \"We do that because of the ohh so tragic history!\" guilds.

As mentioned above, these guilds should be under supervision of GMs. Lead by players, of course, but created only if an acceptable concept is present.

Had to get that out of me.

Had to get that out.

Well, out of pure boredoom I started messing with the MTG Editor  and started creating a (just for fun) Planeshift expansion (well, still unsure about the name considering that \"Planeshift\" is already taken)

What I have done so far (If you have ideas, tips or death threats be sure to post them here or PM them) :

Forum and Website Discussions / Linking and you.
« on: February 24, 2006, 04:54:18 am »
Well all to often I get a small nervous breakdown when I see the in-forum-linking-habbits some people have. It\'s happens rather frequent that, when someone links to another thread, sub forum or whatever he or she also adds style information, which pushes the clicker into a certain style.

Now let me analise a link to another thread on this forum (in this case a link to the great fan-fanart project: images thread)

http://www.planeshift3d.com/wbboard/thread.php?threadid=21467&boardid=22&styleid=3&sid=5e88dd61d82cd88814bdece82b5755e3

The URL to the thread watching part of this forum.

Everything after the \"?\" is information needed (or not needed) to define which thread you link to (and the forum the thread is in), as well as in which style the viewer will see the thread.

The Thread ID sets which thread the clicker will be linked to. This part of the URL is mandatory

The Board ID closely relates to the Thread ID and is as well used to define the thread to which the clicker is linked. This part of the URL is mandatory

The Style ID defines the style in which the thread will be seen by the clicker. Unless you aim to present the thread in a certain style I would advice you to cut it off.

Be aware that the StyleID is not always there if you copy it out of the URL bar of your browser. If you want to set a certain style you simply add \"&styleid=\" + the number of the style you want the thread to be seen in at the end of the url, or if there\'s already a styleid in it simply change the number.

Possible attributes for Style ID:
  • 1 -> A rather old gray and bluish style, doesnt cope to well with the new Banner.
  • 2 -> A brighter version of the above style.
  • 3 -> The standard, blue - white style.
  • 4 -> The all famous brown - greenish style.
Everything above 4 results in an ugly white-in-white with black standard font appearance.[/color]

The Session ID contains Information about your current session. I would advice you to cut it out, always.

Edit: Be aware to delete lone \"&\"s at the end of your URL

Wish list / about trading
« on: January 02, 2006, 09:03:01 pm »
Well while trading with someone an idea came to my mind. Two different kinds of trading. An *open* Trade and a *closed* Trade. While closed is about the same as our regular trade, open trade is a slight notch different. Instead of both traders plucking their items in the trade window, the *host* would offer a selection of items to the *guest/customer*, connected to the trade window there almost certainly should be a trade channel (which actually can be heard by others at very close vicinity) through which bartering would run.

An example for a closed trade would be:

Night has fallen upon Yliakum two shady figures stand in a dark valley, one looks around nervousily.

\"Do you have the tria?\", the other man said calmly with an evil grin.

The other man replied with timid voice: \"y-yes, now give me the stuff\"

The calm man chuckled grabbed the sack full of money and stuffed some wierd smelling weed into the other man\'s pocket

An example for an open trade would be:

It is high season in Vaalnor, the bazaars are at their bloom, the smell of foreign spice reach your nose, exotic weapons lie side by side with buckets of wood as well as all kind of food. Cyl is sitting with crossed legs on a carpet and nods to the Diaboli lady that seems to be amazed by his selection of local brew.

\"Anything you like, miss?\", Cyl raised an eyebrow motioning to the bottles as well as a selection of strange weed, \"housemade, the liquors are housemade, only the best ingredients in the whole land are put into these, and that all only for fifty tria. And these rare plants ensure a sure sleep and nice dreams, only for twenty tria.\"

The lady sticked out her tounge, \"I am taking this bottle over there, and two of these ... plants, but I am only paying fifty trias for everything.\"

Cyl shook his head, \"sixtyfive! Deal?\"

She nodded, \"Deal!\"

Edit: forgot to make sure what my point is:

 - Haveing a second mode of trading for bazaarlike trading
 - Haveing a chat window with close vicinity chat connected to trading

Wish list / about night in Yliakum
« on: January 01, 2006, 04:57:40 am »
Currently night is rather just darker day. This is a start maybe, but it would be a pity if this just keeps like that.

Night should have drastic effect on gameplay. Not only should the assortment of monsters change (There are certainly night/day active monsters, and of course that night active monster has some advantages over the usually non night active humanoids), it should also affect quests (some may be only gotten at night, and/or complete at night as  well).

Also on longer journeys through wilderness, the need to camp at night could come up, considering that mainly most night active monsters would stay away from fire, rather than pressing on in which case the player could end up in an ambush.

The Hydlaa Plaza / Help needed for finding a game
« on: December 18, 2005, 10:24:26 am »
Once, a veeeery long time ago I used to play an old arcade DOS game, but I forgot the name, now I am searching underdogs up and down and cant find it.

It was some kind of arcade game where you had to pick up differently colored crystals and shoot them at each other, it had some sort of plot about all the monsters in video games dissapeared and you had to save them, ..., the protagonists were two stick figures (a red and blue one if I remember right) with yellow triangular head and sunglasses... that\'s pretty much everything I can remember.
