My monster ideas
« on: September 10, 2002, 07:02:30 pm »
Ok, I\'m going to keep updating this, so I\'ll just edit my first post.  So look up here for updates.  Don\'t get mad at me as I\'m not pressing my ideas on anyone, it\'s just my ideas

Since I don?t know much about the game I will rate things from 1-10 in terms of power, speed, etc.

My say: What I think they should be like or what they look like
Home: Where they live, duh
HP: Hit points, or health
Attack: Basic strength, should be modified by weapons
Speed: How fast they move and attack
LV: Basic skill level
Tamable: A low number means hard. A high means easy. (this is just in case you can tame things)

If HP has ?Spirit? after it then it means only magic or magic weapons can kill it.

Monsters

Skeleton
My say: There should be more than one type of skeleton.  Things like bow skeletons, axe and so on.  They should also lie in wait for the unlikely target.  They should be stupid weak and fast and no magic.
Home: Anywhere people have died
HP: 1-2
Attack: 1-3
Speed: 2-3
LV: 1
Tamable: 0

Zombie (ghoul, cadaver, whatever)
My say: In most games Zombies are weaker than skeletons.  Now assuming they are both animated by magic, then the Zombie should be tougher because of clothes, skin and muscle left.  There should be no magic or bow because the muscle would be to stiff to use a bow.
Home: Anywhere people have died
HP: 1-3
Attack: 1-4
Speed: 1-2
LV: 1-2
Tamable: 0

Goblin
My say: Goblins are your basic coward. They run from most fights unless they outnumber the opponent.  They are greedy and like to rob and mug travelers.  Use of magic should be rare.
Home: Anywhere there is money to be taken
HP: 1-2
Attack: 1-2
Speed: 1-3
LV: 1
Tamable: (since Goblins aren?t animals, you can?t really tame them, but you could befriend them I guess)

Cockatrice
My say: A big chicken.  Fights like a animal because it is one.  Should have a petrifying spell and big claws
Home: Forest
HP: 4-5
Attack: 3-4
Speed: 2-3
LV: 3-4
Tamable: 3

Firedrake/Icedrake
My say: Dragon like creatures, not as big or strong but still a danger.  The firedrake has fire breath and the icedrake has ice breath
Home: In locations suiting their name
HP: 4
Attack: 3 for reg/5 for breath
Speed: 2
LV: 4
Tamable: 2

Siren
My say: Not the half women half bird things, these are more like pterodactyls.  Can fly and have a hypnotic song that makes people draw near.
Home: Caves and mountains
HP: 3
Attack: 2-3
Speed: 5
LV: 3
Tamable: 2

Shadowhound
My say: This animal looks and acts like a large dog but can shift patches of fur to create excellent camouflage
Home: Forest and caves
HP: 3
Attack: 3
Speed: 4
LV: 4
Tamable: 4-5

Rockworm
My say: A little worm with sharp grinding teeth and acid saliva
Home: Rocky areas
HP: 1
Attack: 1 (if a hit is scored could maybe damage armor)
Speed: 1 for crawling, .25 for digging
LV: 1
Tamable: 0

Sea Leech
My say: A large leech like creature that lives in water.  They don?t look like leeches but more like a leech with fins and tentacles.  Some have been rumored to look humanoid.
Home: Lakes, ponds, seas.
HP: 5
Attack: 6
Speed: 3
LV: 6
Tamable: 0

Martichoras
My say: Looks like a lion with longer fur and a wider mouth.  It also has spines on it?s tail.
Home: Plains or forest
HP: 6-7
Attack: 6
Speed: 6
LV: 6-7
Tamable: 1-2

Juggernaut
My say: A huge armadillo.  It?s used as pack animals by some.  It eats anything, from people to rocks.
Home: Plains or open areas
HP: 9-10
Attack: 10
Speed: 3
LV: 7
Tamable: 5-6

Wild Minotaur
My say: The classic half man half bull monster, but there is also a sentient version of this beast.  The wild minotaur prefers caves and closed areas.
Home: I just said
HP: 7-8
Attack: 7
Speed: 3
LV: 6-7
Tamable: 0

Iron Fist
My say: A animated suit of armor.  It has no real brains, just a order it keeps, like guard treasure or something.
Home: Castles, places where they would be put
HP: 3-4
Attack: 4
Speed: 2
LV: 4
Tamable: 0

Wodewose
My say: Imagine this, a cross between a monkey and a large squirrel, then give that thing some claws, and some teeth.  Then give it a  nasty thing about killing people in it?s territory.  You now have, the wodewose
Home: Trees
HP: 2
Attack: 3
Speed: 4
LV: 3
Tamable: 2-3

Brocken Bow
My say: A large pale white ghost, which unfortunately, hates everything that?s alive for some reason.
Home: Places where people died, and died gruesomely
HP: 4 (Spirit)
Attack: 10 (don?t let it touch you, cuz your pretty much dead)
Speed: 4
LV: 7-8
Tamable: 0 (it could maybe be asked by a mage to leave that mage alone, and it might do it.)

Blood Spirit
My say: This Spirit appears as a red mist in the shape of a ?demon? or twisted human
Home: Places of evil or where people died
HP: 3 (Spirit)
Attack: 4
Speed: 5
LV: 5
Tamable: 3 (mages should be able to tame spirits)

Wolf
My say: Well, yeah a wolf.  Every game needs em
Home: Anywhere
HP: 3
Attack: 3
Speed: 5
LV: 3
Tamable: 7

Devil Rat
My say: I large rat. Looks like a rat and a armadillo mixed
Home: Everywhere
HP: 1
Attack: 1
Speed: 5
LV: 1-2
Tamable: 3

This is just me talking, and this is only my opinion, BUT i think that those are the worst monster ideas ever. EVEYONE of those monsters has been used to the death in every other game, and it does not too much genious to come up with something that has been done before. I, personally would like to see something fairly new and original, or atleast something fresh. Otherwise, anyone can be on the \"team\" since they are oh so great at playderazing(spelling=wrong) others. BUT as i have mentioned before, this is in no way to discurage you.

Just because they\'re cliche doesn\'t mean you shouldn\'t run with the basics.
If they want a more original, new feel to it, then yeah those will probably be overlooked.

They could have spirit beasts-ghosts of sacrificied animals.
Basislisk-major boss-like serpent
maybe...dopplegangers-fight your \"evil\" or \"good\" side.
alan-half man, half bird creatures
gryphon-well...you know
stymphalian birds- big, crow/heron, birds with metal beaks

Of course those are the \"worst ones\" ever.  Duh..that\'s why every RPG needs them.  Like my good friend Barak said, they should be used.  And like I said, those arn\'t my \"best\".  I never said my ideas were great, I just said I had a lot.  I\'ll be typing more when school allows.

well i for one think those are cool ideas. but there is one problem...the hp of the monsters dont seem very realistic. i mean cmon..what monster in any rpg you have seen has had less than 15 hp at level one? there is only one game i can think of like that, and thats dnd for genesis. those games sucked badly though.

I never said they should not be used, i just said that if you claimed to have alot of good ideas, so i wanted to see some good, non-copied ideas. Needless to say, i was dissapointed. Some of the newer once seem to be good, but still have some parts from other games like D2, or other MMORPG. But i guess it\'s really hard to come up with something that has not been done before.
As for the boring monsters, we will most likely see them in the game, since every game has them.

The ratings (as I have already said) are a general thing.  10 hp dosn\'t mean 10 Hit points, it means a lot.  2-3 would mean a pretty weak creature.

I know I said I had good ones, but I never said they were new. I also said it takes some time to think of these things.

Monster generating is left up to the Settings team...which now is under new leadership, with new resolve, and a new member, they are doing a very good job, and are making tons of new original ideas

No way. This is the wish list. If anyone wishes for a skeleton or a three-headed monkey, this is the place to post it. I read everything and copy good idea\'s  8)

No, i dont think you should stop, but if your goal is to overall help settings directly, and you have the drive to, you should apply to work in that department. If you are in settings, you have a bit more say in things, and have the opportunity to work with some creative, if somewhat awkward people *cough*ParaSite and Heretic *cough* :D
