Technical Help: IN GAME bugs (after loading world) / deleting a character
« on: December 28, 2004, 07:12:32 am »
Is it possible to delete a character I created?
I would like to give a different background info, stats, etc. to my character, but with the same name. How can I delete my character, so I can create it again?

Technical Help: IN GAME bugs (after loading world) / server ports again
« on: December 24, 2004, 04:56:18 pm »
UDP 7354
Thanks, I needed to know, that it is UDP.
Is that the only one port needed?
Also, could this be mentioned in some FAQ? As I couldn\'t find any documentation about this, and I\'m sure others will also benefit from it.

I am behind a firewall. Exactly, what ports do I need to enable to be able to connect?

Ogg is becoming the new standard, so you better \"update your bookmarks\" as they say :)
BTW, Winamp (both latest classic and 3) can play ogg files. I used ogg, because mp3 compressing is not free, and I don\'t have the money to pay it. While ogg is free (and in fact far better than mp3).

OK, back to topic:

Actually you are right. Congratulations!
The music is from a C64 game, called \"Creatures 2 - Torture Trouble\", one of the best made games on the C64 ever. It definitely pushes the C64 graphics to the limits. The original music, in it\'s original form is here:
http://bigbrother.vac.hu/~einstein/music/creatures_2.sid

To play it, you\'ll need classic (v2.x) Winamp (Winamp 3 is just a pile of shit) and you\'ll need the SIDAmp plugin. Get it from
http://www.labyrinth.net.au/~adsoft/sidamp/
Beware though that it is a bit buggy and sometimes tends to crash Winamp. It works fine otherwise.

If you wish to play the game itself, head on to
http://viceteam.bei.t-online.de/
and get the latest Windows binary of the VICE C64 emulator, then get the disk image of the game from
http://www.c64.com
then attach it to drive 8, and type
load\"*\",8,8
then hit enter, and when it\'s ready, type
run
then hit enter. Setup the joystick of the emulator to your keyboard, and there you go. Tell me if you can get through the first level, I\'ll gratulate to you if you do. It took me a while back then (I was only 9 that time though :) )
Don\'t laugh at the graphics! That\'s what nearly 1 MHz (yes, ONE MHz) can give you.

In the
http://bigbrother.vac.hu/~einstein/music/
folder, you can find some SIDs, and some mp3s. Those mp3s are the \"rewamped\" versions of the old musics. Definitely worth to take a look at.

BTW, is there anyone here from the C64 days? I\'m just courious whether there is anyone here, who ever had a C64. Is there?

Okay, I\'ll help a bit. The music\'s original format is .sid, that is it was originally played by a SID chip. Does this ring any bells? Look in the 8 bit PC world, even before 286. A computer, that had 64K ram system... :)

This post was originally at the Wish list, but it became off-topic, so I\'ll continue it here.

The next one music track is from an old game (1993). Here it is:

http://bigbrother.vac.hu/~einstein/music/game1.ogg
(1,3 MB)
Here is a higher quality version:
http://bigbrother.vac.hu/~einstein/music/game1_high.ogg
(3,7 MB)

It is kind of an old-school music (in terms of quality). Can you guess what game is it from? Come on big old-timers! I tell you, that it is not from the 16 bit and above PCs, but from the 8 bit world.
If you have no idea of the game\'s name, I\'m courious what does the music makes you think to? I am particularly interested in what sort of terrain/season/weather appears before you while listening? (Some music-psichology...)

Please be patient about the download, I only have 24 kbyte/s connection out. I\'ll post the original version (a LOT smaller) as soon as someone finds out the game :)
Sorry, but knowing the original format would help a lot and it would blow the fun away.

Thanks for your time.

Hmmm...
I think it\'s simple to do. Just replace the .ogg files with your own music in the PlaneShift/art/music dir, that\'s all.

Yeah, sometimes I encounter really great music, and when I do, I get it. From the game (if it has it in files - like homm3 had that in mp3), or from the Net. Homm2 had brilliant battle music too, and the most relaxing adventure-screen music. I\'m talking about the MIDI version. Of course it depends only on your sound card how MIDI sounds, but if you have a good soundfont, it can sound really great. I haven\'t found them anywhere, don\'t some of you know where can I find homm2 music? I have been looking for it for a looong time, without result :(

I just posted the above music as I think they are good. I would listen to something \"similar\" when I go to hack\'n\'slash in Yliakum.
I hope the PlaneShift musicians will make some good battle theme(s).

WOW! Congratulations!
I never thought anyone would know or remember.
I seems we have some real roleplayers here.  :D

BTW, isn\'t it just good? Something I would listen when I crack some creep\'s skull.

Hmmm. I haven\'t been on these for a long time...
No matter, here is another great battle theme:
http://bigbrother.vac.hu/~einstein/combat02.ogg

Again, this is NOT free. Delete it in 24 hours.

Who can tell which game is it from? (No, it is no BG :) )

The concept of a spell dialect and spel combinations although interesting is not original - there are many games with combination magics and using spell words is little ore than a mud based game.  As Planeshift is going to be original and not a mud - this system is not practical - look for something more visual and gui oriented.

I\'m sorry, but you\'re wong here. I haven\'t seen any game so far, that used this concept, as most RPGs on computers are more or less based on AD&D, and there are only fixed spells, which you have to memorize, etc.
And speaking about original things, if I take things strictly, the whole magic stuff in PS is not original at all, as PS spells are cast from: mana. Well, as I said, I haven\'t seen any game using the concept discussed here, but I have played at least 20 games that has mana. Don\'t misunderstand me: the mana stuff is good. I just showed, that in PS, this magical dialect would be just fine.

About visual and GUI stuff: have you EVER talked to an NPC??? Well, I think that is don\'t visual or gui oriented at all.

I think this idea is important, because in a real RPG, the wizard is the toughest character to play. I have an RPG book here, and it sais, only start a wizard character, if you are a very experienced player.
Here, this magical dialect stuff would make a wizard\'s role harder. A wizard\'s life is not easy. If someone wants to go hack\'n\'slash, quickly kill monsters, then be a fighter (no classes, but adjust your skill points to resemble a fighter). If you want to use magic, then you have to work for it, not just your character.
