General Discussion / Ready for a new OSP Contest?
« on: September 01, 2009, 05:44:13 pm »
It's been a few months now since the Red Crystal Organization and the Explorers joined the Octarchal Society for Progress and so far they've done a great job delivering several events for the community, helping improve the RP environment in Laanx.

We've been asked when we'll allow other guilds/organizations to join the OSP a few times so this poll is to test the level of interest. Are you ready to participate? Do you have an original idea that can help Yliakum's society as well as promote RP? Or do you feel we should wait a bit longer before doing this again?

Share your thoughts (but don't share your potential OSP ideas quite yet!) and we'll see. :)

In-Game Roleplay Events / OSP Event Rules
« on: June 06, 2009, 01:09:34 am »
Now that we have two OSP members and each has been granted administrative rights over Octarchal property, there are some rules we should make clear for everyone:

1. All OSP events must use the following subject: "[OSP] <Event Name>". Being that they are more than player run events yet not exactly GM events, the [OSP] tag shall identify them from now on (where as in the other cases we use both the [RP] and [Event] tags).

2. All OSP venues (Red Crystal Den, Explorer Outpost, and all future venues) are considered official places for Octarchal affairs, therefore, committing any crimes there constitutes an act of IC treason and as such, will be punished harshly. If a player does not wish to face the consequences of their IC actions, they are free to state so, but that will force all OSP members to ignore their actions, just like when GM guards RP with players. See Octarchal Crackdown discussion thread for more details on how this works. And, if we deem that your actions are becoming OOCly disruptive, we will deal with you accordingly.

3. All players must have free access to all OSP venues and events as long as they respect the rules set for them. Likewise, they must respect the authority of the sanctioned administrators both IC and OOC. You, as a player, can bring any character to those places. No fees, no quests, and no acquaintances are required. And if your asked to fulfill any of those criteria you must report it so we can set it right.

4. Good RP is expected. That means: know your settings, be respectful, do not godmod, and remember that your character's actions have consequences.

We'll be adding more points to this post as we see fit.

Have you seen them work?
Have you heard them talk?
They are building something new

General Discussion / Godmodding GMs!
« on: February 13, 2009, 11:19:20 am »
So, Game Masters apply the game settings through events, bringing them closer to players' RP. We remind them of those things mechanics cannot yet cover or police. We create situations in which players can roleplay their characters in accordance to what should exist in the world of Yliakum. Because of this, events are run through settings first to make sure we got all angles covered and consistency is not compromised.

GMs also have access to certain powers that IC could be translated as "godly". We can drop an ulbernaut on your head if we need to. We can port you anywhere in the world and even to parallel dimensions where you are the only living person. We can make you sit down compulsively. We can cut your tongue. We can turn you into any living creature. We can make your character age, change the color of their hair or give you a tattoo and make these changes permanent. We can even strip you naked. And more. And we can do all of this with a few commands. That means that we can create IC situations in which your character will be "forced" to do or face something.

Note that I'm talking about IC situations. That means that should we do any of the things listed above it will be within a context that fits the game settings and players will always get the choice to sit the event out if it doesn't fit their character. We do not force players to join events. We offer the choice and from that point we provide consequences to the players' decisions.

Now, that means that we are somewhat in control of what may happen in these situations. The only thing we cannot and will not attempt to control will be your choices. We'll have different scenarios prepared so you can choose to follow one path or another and we try to roll with what players wish to do once the party has reached an agreement (if 10 people can't agree on what to do, we simply wait and see what they do as a group).

The bottom line is GMs have the upper hand here over players, in a similar yet, hopefully, more intelligent way as NPCs do with quests. Certain answers are expected from players, choices are given, and situations are altered to provide players with information they can use to solve the mysteries at hand. The way these situations are being altered is mostly through available mechanics and, again, supported IC by the settings, and we always provide a way out so all characters can stay IC and react as they should. Sometimes, we describe the situation with messages that describe things you may hear or see. Sometimes we will make you feel certain things as a consequence of your actions like a "deep sense of loss" caused by a divine power after you participated in some kind of ritual, or plain dizziness or a stomachache because that pie your character ate didn't agree with you.

Well, my question is: how do players feel about us having "the upper hand"? Do you consider that godmodding? If it is, is it the same as when a player does it? What would you find acceptable and what would be going too far? Do you think there's a better way?

In-Game Roleplay Events / [Event] The Octarchal Society for Progress
« on: January 09, 2009, 01:07:21 am »
A light footed Lemur puts up posters in the city of Hydlaa. Likewise, messengers deliver the news to Gugrontid and Akkaio as well as other cities in the dome. The posters read:

Octarchal Society for Progress

It is the pleasure of Octarch Iragdun Salikarios to announce the creation of the Octarchal Society for Progress, an organization that unites guilds that work to improve the quality of life in our realm and preserve and promote opportunities for social growth in all fields.

All Guilds that aspire to be a part of the Octarchal Society for Progress must participate in an annual contest, by presenting a proposal that answers the following question:

“What would you do with the resources of the Octarchy in order to improve the quality of Life in Yliakum?â€

Application Process

1. All proposals must be submitted in a brief document with the following structure:

  • Description of the Idea: Explain what the main idea is about and why it would contribute to enrich our society in any aspect: performing arts, culture, science, public health, security, social assistance, education, etc.

  • Implementation: Describe how the plan would be executed and how many citizens it can potentially benefit.

  • Requirements: Name the things that would be required in order to implement the Idea (E.G.: money, access to public buildings or a guildhouse).

2. The ideas that prove to be the most original, feasible, and beneficial for our society as well as those with the most potential to be successfully implemented shall be chosen as semifinalists by the Jury.

3. Each semifinalist guild shall receive a maximum of 10 minutes in order to present their ideas to the Jury, after which they will have to answer the questions of the panel. These presentations will be open to the public.

4. A maximum of three winners shall be announced after all presentations have been made and deliberation has concluded.

5. The winning guilds shall be invited to be part of the Octarchal Society for Progress and will receive the resources they requested to implement their plans.

Requirements and Obligations of the Winning Guilds:

1. Winning guilds must never be involved in any kind of illicit activities such as acts against the government or that infringe the laws of Yliakum. Shall they not fulfill this requirement, the guilds will be stripped of all benefits and rights bestowed upon them by the Octarchy and harshly prosecuted for the crimes committed.

2. Winning guilds must execute the plans they proposed and report to the Board of the Octarchal Society of Progress. Failure to achieve their goals shall cause the removal of all benefits and rights bestowed upon them by the Octarchy.

Evaluation Criteria:

  • Originality. How fresh and different is the idea? (0-10 points)

  • Functionality. How feasible is it? (0-10 points)

  • Potential. How many people will it benefit? (0-10 points)

  • Presentation. How convincing and articulate were the written and oral presentations? (0-10 points)

Proposals with the highest scores will be chosen as semi-finalists. No minimum or maximum numbers have been predetermined. The three presentations that earn the highest scores will be invited to join the OSP this term.

OCC Rules:

1. All guilds can participate. Those guilds that already have a guildhouse cannot request one for private use but they can be given money or allowed to administrate a second house with the purpose of keeping it open to the public at all times or perform a public service for which their private guildhouse would not be fit.

2. All proposals must be RP oriented. Originality and functionality will be major factors to determine the winners. Winning guilds are expected to hold events on a regular basis and involve the community in them as much as possible. They must announce their events in the In-Game RP Board of the PS Forums and work actively to involve as many players as possible in them and promote good RP.

3. All participating guilds must be settings-compliant in order to be considered.

4. The Jury or Board of the Octarchal Society for Progress will be formed by members of the Settings and GM team.

5. Winning guilds will receive money, items and even the buildings their proposals require but they will not be given any special treatment beyond that. They will be solely responsible for the organization of their events and the completion of their projects. GMs and Devs will not assist them nor give them special powers or access.

6. If a winning guild’s activity ceases or if a guild fails to organize the expected events, they will lose the rights and benefits given.

7. There is no limit as to how many guilds can join the Octarchal Society for Progress and we will hold these contests periodically to allow new guilds to apply as well as old ones to try again.

8. Winning guilds will not lose their benefits as long as they stay active and abide by the contest's IC and OOC rules.

9. Guilds involved in unlawful or evil activities can apply but they must make sure their IC actions remain secret. Should they be discovered, they will have to face the consequences.

10. Oral presentations must be prepared with shortcuts to keep things in order. Not doing so will cost you presentation points.

11. The evaluation criteria is IC as well as OOC. In OOC terms:

  • Originality: How fresh is this idea RP-wise?

  • Functionality: How possible is it to pull off at the current stage of development?

  • Potential: How many players will find this enjoyable and will it promote good roleplay? Will new players find it appealing?

  • Presentation: How did they RP their presentation?

12. Representatives of the Octarchal Society for Progress will be gathering applications at different hours ingame starting this weekend. An OOC announcement will be made both in IRC and the forums. Submissions will only be received till January (Saturday) 24th. Once this stage is closed, the date of the release of the shortlist will be revealed, along with the interview dates and venue.

13. The GM and Settings Team may, without further notice, cancel or postpone the activities of the Octarchal Society for Progress if the objectives of the project are not met. This is an effort to promote RP and support RP oriented guilds and its success depends greatly on the community.

Use this thread to make all your questions regarding the process, the event, etc. Ask away.

In-Game Roleplay Events / [Event] Blessings of the Goddess
« on: January 01, 2009, 08:28:31 pm »

Some have felt her blessings, and some are still in disbelief, yet her garden blooms
with faithful ones, eager to receive her grace. She shall not ignore those who praise
her quietly as they should not wander off the path she lays for them. But whether
or not you've been blessed by her, do not forget to visit her garden for she is most
happy when her followers celebrate the beauty of her work.

*     *     *

[The Goddess is happy and wishes more people come see her garden. Do not expect a magic show, a reward or a party but celebrate her presence and grace for she sure has earned some devotion. Take this as an opportunity to post your IC reactions to the recent events as well as to visit the garden IG and RP there more often. Just remember it's a holy place and it's not smart disrespect Xiosia. No OOC post please, use the other boards for that.]

General Discussion / Mary-Sue plots
« on: August 12, 2008, 12:28:09 pm »
We've talked about Mary-Sue characters before and had some kicks while doing it. For those who don't know the term, it refers to creating a character using stereotypical and unoriginal ideas (like being an orphan, having been possessed by a demon, have deep eyes filled with a hidden sorrow, etc.). Check some descriptions in-game and you'll probably know what I'm talking about.

Well, I've noticed that even when we don't have any Mary-Sues in our event parties, we do have a Mary-Sue presence of some sort that tends to re-write the events and plots to meet that stereotypical scenario that Mary-Sue really enjoys. It's like players are already expecting these situation and they sometimes blatantly ignore what they have in front of them or what they know (or should know) about the world we play in.

Let me give you some examples:

When you see a GM guard your first reaction is:
1) He/She is there to protect citizens and deserves respect.
2) He/She is probably corrupt and I will prove it.

When you saw a riverling for the first time you:
1) Charged immediately because it must be a monster.
2) Kept your distance since you knew they could be quite dangerous.

When you are offered a taste of a very strange looking and smelling dish your reaction is:
1) Yummmmm! It's delicious! *stuffs his face*
2) Er... *grabs a big piece of bread and dips the tip very slightly into the concoction, smiling nervously*

When you see a wizard bringing a pack of ulbers to attack Hydlaa your reaction is:
1) I must join him! He has to be fighting injustice.
2) He's attacking my city, I must help the guards!

When you (or if you) are placed under arrest for a misdemeanor like wielding your weapons in the city, your reaction is:
1) This is proof the guards are corrupt!
2) Please, let me out. I won't do it again...

When you hear a man was sentenced to true death by the Octarchy, your reaction is:
1) Booohhh, criminal! *Tosses rotten fruit at the prisoner as they are dragged to their execution*
2) He must be innocent! Let him go! *Stands in front of the guards demanding a fair trial*

When you hear that the Octarch has decreed that there will be zero tolerance for criminals, your reaction is:
1) I must fight oppression and for our civil rights! Flower power!
2) About time! The fights in the tavern are getting out of hand.

See my point? Sometimes, there are corrupt officials in the government. Sometimes, innocent people are sentenced to death. Sometimes, you should attack first and ask questions later. Sometimes, but not always. So please keep that in mind and most importantly listen. You won't get it right if you don't. It doesn't mean that GMs will force a script on you so that everything plays out as we want, but we do expect outcomes to be logical and for that, players have to stay within settings and drop some of the notions that they so eagerly and inaccurately apply to every situation they face despite the facts.

So please, keep this in mind and resist the urge to Mary-Sue the plot, be it a player or GM event. Remember that what you believe in and your own experiences are not those of your characters. In the end it is entirely up to you how you want to play your character but, as more content is developed and settings get to be more specific, those elements should be incorporated to your RP. Otherwise, you won't be making much sense.

In-Game Roleplay Events / [Event] The Hand of Law
« on: August 10, 2008, 02:45:49 am »
"Dead man walking!" is heard through the streets of Hydlaa as the guards escort Djoti Jelkaf. He is to be taken to the Bronze Doors Fortress, where he will be executed. Citizens quickly gather around the prisoner and the guards explain he was found guilty of several charges that included murder, necromancy, and conspiracy to murder government officials.

As the group heads towards the North Gate, the gate guards give the alarm: Ulbernauts. Some of the guards quickly assume their positions along the wall, while others secure the prisoner. As guards head out to repel the invaders they see Kawad, an enchanter bold enough to attack the city in broad daylight, perhaps confident of the strength of his minions. He, however, did not anticipate the people of Hydlaa would answer the call to arms and overrun his beasts. The battle was fierce and there were several casualties but the monsters were slain and the wizard had to flee to avoid getting caught.

After the battle, the wounded were tended to, the damages measured, and the bodies of the dead beasts removed from the path. The citizens commented on the attack. Some worried that the prisoner was being sentenced to death unjustly, believing the lies he told them while the guards were containing the situation. They approached the guards to express their concerns.

Kawad, however, realizing that he had lost, that it would only be a matter of time before his own arrest and trial, and that by being an outlaw he'd lose his last chance to see his brother alive, turned himself in. With several citizens as witnesses, he admitted to committing the crimes along with his brother and was placed under arrest.

In the light of this new evidence the prisoners were taken to jail and the execution postponed so that the competent authorities could evaluate it and determine each of the brothers' responsibility in the crimes. Word of a new trial quickly spreads among the town's folk...

In-Game Roleplay Events / [Event] Didil and Kemmy's Bazaar
« on: August 06, 2008, 08:40:49 pm »
A young Klyros and his kormi friend, Kemmy, arrive in Hydlaa bringing carpets and pillows from Ojaveda. Many customers quickly gather around their post. After a good day's work, they pack up their wares and head off to Gugrontid. Happy with the day's earnings, they leave town already thinking about their next business venture. What will they bring their customers next time?

In-Game Roleplay Events / [Event] The Octarchal Crackdown
« on: July 29, 2008, 11:00:00 pm »
Due to escalating violence and lawlessness in the cities of the first level the Octarch has upped patrols and issued a zero tolerance policy against those who choose to break the law and defy the Octarchy.

It is the duty of all citizens to report criminals to the guards with no exception.

General Discussion / Event Appetite Poll
« on: July 24, 2008, 02:44:18 pm »
Events are meant to create interesting situations where characters can define the outcome through their actions. In that sense, all characters should be able to join them. Obviously, the situation should be treated realistically and the characters need to have a reason/motivation to get involved. That's why I'd like to know what kind of situation would spike your character's interest.

If I didn't screw up the poll, you should be able to vote for 3 options.

Note that the terms "good" and "evil" are used only as a reference here (to keep options simple).

If you simply don't like events, do post your thoughts and reasons so we can do something about it.

And if you have other ideas or you just want to vote for snorks, use the "Other" option. Thank you. :)

General Discussion / Uneventable Me (I, Roleplayer)
« on: July 23, 2008, 12:14:34 pm »
I, Roleplayer

I set the standard
I am the one
I know the laws of RP
I wrote them all
I am neither good nor evil
I am neither big nor small
I dwell in my plots
And my plots are none
I, Roleplayer
roleplay alone

Ok. Forgive the happening. Call it a performance thread, if you will... but I've been thinking about this for a while now. The community has very different peoples. Call them cliques, call them groups, call them whatever you want. Some are roleplayers, some are powerlevelers, some a both, some are none. The game is supposed to welcome everyone and foster Roleplay. This, to my understanding, does not mean that only roleplayers should play the game but that roleplay should be the most important characteristic of PS and the community, which does not exclude other things like training, questing or making money, it only means those things should not disrupt RP.

Now, the thing that worries me is that in our effort for creating sound characters and plots sometimes we fall into what I'd like to call the "I, Roleplayer" attitudes. Let me give you some examples:

  • I, Roleplayer cannot stand learning mistakes. I too cringe a little when I read something like "/me thinks it's going to rain soon", or "Hi! :)". Neither being able to naturally read someone's thoughts nor the smiley belongs in an IC entry but if we interrupt RP to [point out] these things in main chat, WE are the cause RP is being disturbed. It's not the same as going plain OOC with lols and whatnot.

  • I, Roleplayer have a unique character who "wouldn't do that", "wouldn't join that", "wouldn't care about that". Yes, creating a unique personality is an essential part of roleplaying but you can't roleplay alone. It saddens me a little when people take this idea too far and ostracize themselves from the community plots simply because their character is "above" those things others do. I can't join that event because my character doesn't care about that, someone told me once. Fair enough, but how often does your character have to sit plots and events out because of that same reason? When the very nature of your roleplay keeps you from interacting with others, a little flexibility and rethinking could be of use. If not, you're the only one missing out on things.

  • I, Roleplayer had a great group of friends once but since they left, I have not seen anyone else I would be interested in roleplaying with. The saddest thing is when we don't have a reason to RP or come online anymore. We know how much we like RP, we try to do it every time we're on, but we simply cannot find the people to do it with. I know this from experience and I can tell you it's really not a big deal. People come and they leave and then come back and leave again. It's a part of any community. You just need to let go and not sit and wait for your friends of days past to come back. The moment I started a little plot with one of my characters, I made a ton of new friends. Sure, I missed my old one but guess what? Many of them have returned since then. We can't do anything about people leaving, but we can do a lot to get to know those who have arrived.

  • I, Roleplayer am misunderstood, my wishes ignored, and my initiatives shut down by the PS staff and the Powerlevelers. The "I, Roleplayer" attitude separates us from the rest. If we see ourselves as a minority or a faction in the community we are creating reasons to distrust the others and their intentions when in the end, there is no need to make such distinctions. Note that I am not referring to people who like the game because they can RP in it. I'm talking about the people who use the word "roleplayer" to separate themselves from others ("powerlevelers", "developers", "game masters", "forum members", "NPCs"). We assume they do not understand us and that they are not interested in making the game better for us. That is not the case. It's easy to get the wrong impression about people if we base our opinions on a few posts on the forums. It's obvious that opinions will differ and sometimes even clash but we don't have to assume ill intent every time and when we set our minds in defensive mode because "I, Roleplayer" am being mistreated, then discussions are not going to be constructive. This "I, Roleplayer" attitude is infectious and it's responded with an "I, Powerleveler" one, or an "I, Developer" one an "I, Game Master" one. The "I" part being the problem.

  • I, Roleplayer have a keen eye for inconsistencies and I shall not be part of anything flawed. Details. They are very important but in a game in development the more details we try to define, the more corrections and rewrites we will be making in the future. Of course we care about consistency. Of course we want things to make IC sense all the time but there are things that do not exist yet and we have to allow certain vagueness when referring to them so that when they get written we're not completely out of bounds. So yes, sometimes events and plots will lack some details and elements, or they can have questionable/debatable approaches but know that all events have to be approved by Settings or Talad, so the content in them is therefore official and there all make sense; and that events are created for the entertainment of players. There is an OOC reason there, which is the same  behind the very existence of the game and in that sense we can sacrifice a few IC details so players have the best time. There is both deep concern for giving events the IC meaning they need to take place as well as deep concern of what will make them more enjoyable for players. "I, Roleplayer", however, do not fail at pointing out the flaws and stop right there, outraged, offended, bewildered. It's "I, Roleplayer" who is the first to go OOC about those flaws, demanding they be corrected, stopping my RP in the process. Do not get me wrong, we appreciate any feedback concerning events and we always listen to what the community says about them and try to make them better based on that (even if we don't always do exactly what the community says we should). What we don't want, however, is for "I, Roleplayers" to assume that things have not been thought through and focus on those details we cannot specify and forget that the game is in development and that they must adjust their expectations accordingly. And most importantly, we don't want "I, Roleplayers" to stop roleplaying because of the flaws they see. Sadly, it's the "I, Roleplayers" who are the first to ignore that what goes on around them is IC because of the flaws they detect, instead of being flexible about those things for the sake of roleplay.

So, in conclusion, the "I, Roleplayer" attitude should be dropped. The objective of the game is that from the moment we log on until we log off, there should be uninterrupted roleplay. That means that everything that happens in-game should be but also seen as IC, and we should simply ignore or walk away from things that disrupt that. We don't have to [protest!] in-game, we just need to let go, move on and keep on roleplaying. That's the best thing we can do to protect RP. If you want to raise your voice about it, you're welcome to post a thread here, send PMs, or talk on #planeshift. Just don't be the one breaking your RP or keeping you out of events. Don't let minor things get in the way and certainly, don't make others feel inadequate becuase they used a smiley when they said hi. That is the reason why many people will see the PS community as unwelcoming and won't want to roleplay again. It's not the lack of details. It's not the GMs or Devs' fault. It's the "I, Roleplayer" attitude. It unnecessarily divides our community.

But most importantly, it's the "I, Roleplayer" attitude that keeps you from enjoying the game.

I decided to post this because the PS teams work hard to make the game more fun for the players but we often hit the "I, Roleplayer" wall and I personally find people with that attitude uneventable. And it's not exactly the people, it's the attitude that's bad and that should be changed. Just ask yourself if you've ever had attitudes like the ones described above and then ask yourself when was the last time you really enjoyed the game. A little self-assessment can help greatly.

I, Roleplayer
am uneventable.
I, Roleplayer
am unplottable.
I, Roleplayer
am untrainable.
I, Roleplayer
am unquestable.
I, Roleplayer
am killing roleplay.

In-Game Roleplay Events / [Event] Unlawful Connections
« on: July 21, 2008, 12:28:45 pm »
Word travels fast but only among folk of certain kind. Only those on the other side of the law may hear the rumors bellow:

A new gang is forming up and it seems they have a plan. Big loot. Big risk. What is this about? Only those with unlawful connections know...

[This event is for all players but only unlawful characters will be allowed to join this side. Players can contact me via PM or in-game to register, giving a brief description of their characters and why they would want to participate. No undercover goodies will be allowed. Don't even try it. You'll have a chance to join the event but not as a spy. The good guys will have a part too. If your characters are not really unlawful they wouldn't even hear what is going on. Faction points and previous RPs will be evaluated.]

In-Game Roleplay Events / [Event] Stampede!
« on: July 04, 2008, 03:14:33 pm »

To all citizens of Hydlaa:

Peace and quiet in Yliakum is, and always will be, one of the Octarchy's highest priorities. Recent
reports of wild creatures being released within city walls and causing chaos among citizens have
reached the ears of the Octarch.

Rest assured that these raids shall not compromise the safety of the city for the guards are always
vigilant and ready to repel any attack. However, despite their swift and effective action in the past
few days to control the raging creatures, some civilian casualties have occurred. Therefore, all
citizens of Hydlaa are advised not to leave their homes unarmed in case of another beast attack.

The city guards have been ordered to deputize capable citizens who might be of aid to defend the
city and investigate the cause of these random raids. All volunteers should report to Lieutenant
Jefecra Harcrit for further details.

[Please post what your characters have witnessed or heard, their thoughts and theories, screenshots, and any other IC entry. This is not an event discussion thread and all OOC posts will be removed.]
