General Discussion / Re: Ready for a new OSP Contest?
« on: October 05, 2009, 10:07:50 am »
Thank you all for your comments and votes.

Now, to make it clear, since apparently there is a misunderstanding about this issue: the OSP is an ongoing event but neither GMs nor Devs have ever claimed credit for the events thrown by OSP members. Their events are something we profit from as a network (in terms of RP in Laanx), like a parent company profits from its subsidiaries, but not something we ourselves see as our own merit. The hard work both The Explorers and the RCO put into throwing these events is commendable and a good sign that the privileges bestowed upon them are well placed. And here's another thing that needs to be clarified: becoming an OSP guild/organization is a privilege. You will be held to a higher standard and more will be expected from you, both in-game and out. In return, you will be given the room, feedback and autonomy to throw events regular players cannot. It is a job you're hired for and that demands constant work in order to keep. It is imperative that the community see that becoming an OSP member is not the result of favoritism but the acknowledgment of the players' creativity and RP skills. It is something one earns with their good performance in and out of the game and not something one is entitled to or that should be taken for granted.

Those in the OSP deserve the greatest respect for, as long as they are a part of this event, they represent some of the best our community has to offer in terms of RP.

Given the results of this poll, we're probably going to wait a little longer before throwing a new contest but we're evaluating other initiatives to allow payers to take on a more active role in the promotion of RP. Stay tuned.

Basically, what we want to know is if there's people out there ready to participate. Having few players or little RP in some areas is really not a barrier here but a reason to support original ideas. What Illysia, Elady, and all the gug tavern staff have proven is that you can bring RP to any place if you just put your back into it. With more players willing to take on tasks like this and get actively involved in improving the RP scene in Laanx, we're sure we'll achieve the kind of atmosphere we aim at.

Perhaps we are ready to choose one more member for the OSP. Perhaps three or maybe none at all. That's what we're trying to figure out.

It's been a few months now since the Red Crystal Organization and the Explorers joined the Octarchal Society for Progress and so far they've done a great job delivering several events for the community, helping improve the RP environment in Laanx.

We've been asked when we'll allow other guilds/organizations to join the OSP a few times so this poll is to test the level of interest. Are you ready to participate? Do you have an original idea that can help Yliakum's society as well as promote RP? Or do you feel we should wait a bit longer before doing this again?

Share your thoughts (but don't share your potential OSP ideas quite yet!) and we'll see. :)

The rules are clear. When you use the /marriage command and accept a marriage proposal from another character you automatically get the same last name as the male character. Why not the female? Beats me. Feel free to start a new thread about that but it will likely not achieve much.

Same sex marriages are not supported by game mechanics so you cannot get the same last name with the /marriage command. All cases not included in the range of this command are not going to be fixed by GMs. This is not a bug. It's the way the game has been written, so deal with it. You're not a jedi either.

RPing a marriage (of any kind) is definitely not the same as RPing being someone's sibling/parent/child. When we allow players to get the same last name because they RP being siblings or whatever, it's a permanent change. Whatever happens to their characters, they are related forever from that moment on. In the case of marriages, you never know. That's why there is a /divorce command (and, of course, it only applies to the cases where the /marriage command can be used).

In any case, same sex marriages are really outside the boundaries of what the rule states as exceptions to changing valid names. So, no: the rules have not changed and until further notice from the Settings team regarding the issue of same sex marriages, the boundaries of the /marriage command will remain the same.

Does that mean you can't RP a gay character? No. Of course you can, unless homosexuality is removed from the settings as a whole, like vampires, Roe vs. Wade or warp speed, which, by the way, would be a creative choice of the writers of this game (and it is, of course, their prerogative) and not a political statement that reflects their personal opinion on these issues IRL.

Expect some news regarding the topic of this thread in the coming days/weeks. We have taken all suggestions and complaints into consideration to foster the involvement all players in the game settings.

Overbearing OOC information regarding RL issues or problems with other players or guilds.
[What does this] mean? At least half of the description should be IC? A few lines of OOC information are fine to tell others to send you a tell if they are offended by your RP?

Overbearing OOC information=when you use your character description window to make OOC entries about RL to the detriment of appropriate IC info, using it as some sort of blog rather than for the purpose it was intended. Like in the main channel, it is ok to make OOC entries but they should be limited to the minimum. Common sense should be common enough to avoid any extremes. Use the other guidelines in that post to make sure your description is ok. "A few lines of OOC information" related to your RP are, of course, acceptable.

And the rules that cover RP aspects are very interesting too. From the IC/OOC rule
Quote from: Dajoji
Read the setting for official information about the world your character belongs to – and while your character can certainly come from another “plane” outside of it, don’t do something outrageous like try to bring in “RP” guns. Keep with the medieval fantasy atmosphere as much as you can.
Didn't some people from the settings team try to tell us for some time that ALL characters currently in Planeshift are born in Ylikaum? But maybe I got something wrong there.... Oh and obviously it's not forbidden in that rule to use all OOC infos from the forums and planeshift page. Seems it's fine to play a character who knows about Vodul or already all guilds, their politics and members.

Game policies are there to prevent OOC disruptive behavior. Bad RP is not punishable for the time being, hence the lack of reference to such behavior. Using information acquired through OOC channels as IC is regarded as bad RP and, as such, frowned upon. Earnest RPers should use their energy in trying to help those who still have a way to go in the RP area and are willing to learn.

RP may be enforced in Laanx in the future but there are still many things to consider before making any official rules. We have to consider that there's always a learning curve and that a RP server does not have to be a hostile one.

The IC/OOC rule has been updated to prevent any confusion now.

We've had GM guard characters for almost a year now and we're working on making the system better so players can really feel that there is social order and that crimes do not go unnoticed by the Octarchy.

For more information about how guards operate, click here, and here.

Newbie Help (Start Here) / Re: Player houses
« on: July 21, 2009, 09:50:22 am »
Houses are available for guilds and player organizations but they are only sold or given away during special events. Players cannot at this moment acquire them alone.

And all official guides, despite how long ago they were posted, are kept up to date by our fine moderators so you can trust the information there is accurate. :)

A better system for players to post announcements ingame has been considered for some time now. It's only a matter of time before we see it implemented.

We'll be interested in learning what the community finds disruptive, whether or not these actions have been deemed against the game policies, so please provide examples if you can along with your comments. Thank you.

Always wondered if the guy spent hours thinking about what to say when he got there or if he just winged it. He probably had the time, huh? Or maybe someone down here told him: "You totally gotta say this, bro, it'll get you quoted beyond belief:..." :P

On the morning news, I discovered he simply winged it. He had thought of it just before walking out, or so I've heard.

P.S: I'd have a request to make. When this thread will be locked for whatever reason it will be ('cuz I'm sure it will be locked one day or another), maybe prepare it so someone could unlock it on the July 20th, 2019, maybe? (Not asking it to be locked right now, but... I guess you might understand what I ask.)

Well of course he's gonna say he winged it! But I still think the guy had a ghostwriter who spent the whole anniversary day complaining about the credit she/he never got for that phrase. :)
