gcc can be used under different systems.
I will include here just the Linux ones and not MinGW since it has some "Windows" background that makes things differents and a little bit hybrid. You find more information about minGW here : http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?board=52.0
Various build guides are here. Select the OS that you use from the dropdown box:
http://planeshift.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/*checkout*/planeshift/trunk/docs/compiling.html?revision=639&pathrev=639 (http://planeshift.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/*checkout*/planeshift/trunk/docs/compiling.html?revision=639&pathrev=639)
For comments, adds-on, problems with the guides post it here.

A new link to an official compile guide can be found here (http://planeshift.cvs.sourceforge.net/*checkout*/planeshift/planeshift/docs/compiling.html).

http://vaalnor.mine.nu/psdoc (http://vaalnor.mine.nu/psdoc) contains several guides as well - for linux and osx

In this link mentioned above, i.e.,
http://planeshift.cvs.sourceforge.net/*checkout*/planeshift/planeshift/docs/compiling.html (http://planeshift.cvs.sourceforge.net/*checkout*/planeshift/planeshift/docs/compiling.html)
there is an issue in the Debian Linux guideline under gcc.
To compile CAL3D you need the LIBTOOL package too.
This package is missing in the guideline.
Please, upload the webpage.
Thank you for your effort.
