The Guilds & Traders Journal it's offered by the Bards Association, (http://www.hydlaaplaza.com/smf/index.php?topic=41852.0) in collaboration with the many guilds of the Dome, specially Klyros Junction, Knowledge Seekers, Bounty Hunters and House DeFaye.
Guilds & Traders Journal
The newspaper of the Dome
Here are the new guidelines for the G&T Journal:
INDEX
1 - Nature of the paper
2 - Goals
3 - Strategy
4 - Roles
5 - Rules of distribution
1 - NATURE OF THE PAPER
>>The Neutrality line
The Guilds & Traders Journal is meant to be a neutral voice. Every point of view is well accepted and, if polited, every idea will be eared and published. That's why the staff should be always aware to defend it indipendance.
>>Amusing and Useful
The intention of the paper is to combine information, utility and fun, producing a publication that may be interesting for both citizens veterans and newcomers.
>>Track the daily history
One of the primary functions of the newspaper is to keep track of events in the local history. Such source of information is needed for those who wish to deepen the events that occurred before their birth and that's why the paper will always return the dates corresponding to the listed events. The words fly, writings remain; people born and die but paper challenges the centuries.
>>Sustainability
The Guilds & Traders Journal is a low-profit organization that aims to the sustainability. This is the main reason why the newspaper needs sponsors and advertisers.
2 - GOALS
>>Withstand time
The main objective of the paper is to succeed in the difficult task of building a lasting newspaper organized to resist the coming and going of the editors, because it is virtually impossible for one person to keep a newspaper alive over the years. To achieve this we need the help of everybody: writers, distributors, guilds, traders and, of course, readers.
>>Wider distribution
Thanks to our vision of sustainability, we hope to be able to get the newspaper into the hands of every citizen who wishes to remain informed.
>>A fluid organization
We wish to create a small cross-guild group of well-intentioned and enterprising people able to interchange themselves in different roles, united by the respect and trust. The fluidity could be the key to keeping the newspaper alive, without requiring too much continued effort from the same people.
3 - STRATEGY
>>Free to announce
The "free announcements" method allow the newspaper to have a high rate of interesting content, making it really useful for the reader, the real user of the product. Obviously if you have something to say to the world and you want more visibility, you can always request a paid advertisement.
>>Limited edition
The number of printed copies will be strictly controlled in order to keep track of sales. This also allows to objectively evaluate the rarity of each issue, offering to the collectors a safe way to estimate the effective value of the missing pieces.
>>Special re-prints
If the editorial staff receives requests for a certain issue of the journal that has sold out, they will reprint new copies on demand, which will be strictly numbered and perfectly identical to the original. The price for this "reprint on demand" is 2000 tria.
>>Dissemination initiatives
The funds in excess will be invested in regular campaigns to promote the dissemination of the newspaper.
>>Free for readers
The newspaper will be distributed free of charge, to all those who wish to read it.
>>Donations and paid advertisement
Donations are always well accepted and we thank everyone in advance for their help. It is preferable to deliver the donations directly to the editor. We are also glad to give more visibility to your activities by providing a paid advertisement service.
4 - ROLES
>>Editor
The work of the editor is the most difficult and often forces you to work longer than expected. Each edition of the newspaper will be entrusted, from time to time, to the care of a single editor, who will have the following tasks:
1) Contents: Make sure that all sections show updated contents, that texts are correct, both grammatically and bibliographically. Choose the contents of the various sections, providing for filling the gaps with personal contributions if necessary.
2) Editorial: Writing the editorial for each issue.
3) Layout and printing: If needed, make minor changes on each issue, to avoid traumatizing the reader's eye. The editor must take charge of duplicating each copy of every issue.
4) Economic Administration: Pay salaries, buy books, authorize fees and sponsorships for events, pay cash rewards of competitions and manage the incomes from sales of advertising.
5) Negotiations: Negotiate with representatives of guilds and merchants and respond to complaints.
>>Reporter
There are at least two types of reporter, the correspondent and journalist. The first performs the tasks assigned by the editor, while the second takes charge of the investigations personally and develop products on its own initiative. The reward for this task may vary depending on the amount of work required. Anyone will be able to write something interesting may publish in the newspaper as freelancer, though not belonging to the group, for free or for the corresponding reward.
>>Collaborator
The collaborator normally in encharged to find contents for the Relax and Announcements sections, but they can also provide more traders for the Traders List (Guilds Descriptions will be most likely collected from trustful members of the newspaper).
>>Distributor
The distributor hands out the copies and spends much time in contact with people, represents for many the "face" of the newspaper. In addition to good education, the distributor is asked to respect the rules of distribution (section 5) and the places established for it.
5 - RULES OF DISTRIBUTION
>>The trading set
The distributor should always be provided with a support to place the flyer of the newspaper, this guidelines and all the material belonging to the current issue. He/she should decorate the "store" with a fancy decoration. The newspaper will provide the written material but not the rest of the stuff.
>>Fixed Places
Every distributor should find a place in which to mount his "store". This place should be always the same to give customers a point of reference. This rule can be ignored in case of events or meetings.
>>Respect other distributor
Every city should host only one distributor at a time. Therefore, respect is needed for the existing distributor.
>>Respect the customers
The kindness and patience are essential qualities for the distributor.

\\o// Hooray - another newspaper.
Hope it will last longer than all the previous.
-
That's interesting.
and now I'm curious about previous newspapers...
OK, Boeven, use the f***g search button... ;D
-
The Journal is wonderful and has already generated a lot of RP for my character.
Nova gives a tip of the helm to the Journal Staff
-
Hope it will last longer than all the previous.
Is one of our goals and is the reason why i'm trying to crate a small guild for it. Please pay attention to the guidelines...
and now I'm curious about previous newspapers..
In the 3° issue, currently on sales, there is an article about the old newspapers in Yliakum. :)
-
/me applauds the idea!
Great idea, wish you guys the best of luck with it! :)
-
/me could imagine becoming freelancer - reviving his previous job from the Plaza Times...
-
So, where are the news? It'd work better for you if you had examples of your work, rather than exposing the boring part of it. :P

The paper is sold In-Game. I'll not post here it's content because this thread exists to discuss the rules, the "boring" part as you say, and to find people who wants to help the paper to last.
-
\\o// :P ::) ;D

The 4° issue will be out today!!
Very huge edition with tons of contents and, as special gift to the first 48 customers, a free "Tourist Map" drawn by Leonardus.
We still need help to keep the paper alive! We need writers with their own ideas and people interested on being the editor for some issue! Please don't let go the opportunity to build the most complete and interesting paper in the planeshift history!
-
/me cheers!! ;D

@ Raikana:
The weekly appearance is almost a problem for me ... as I am in-game almost only during weekends. So this becomes already a nearly "daily newspaper" to me. And "a circle a day" is not little for a mainly roleplaying character. But it gives me OOC a good hint how much really happens during the week of absence. So don't get told roleplaying is dead, there is enough to fill a weekly journal!

Please don't get it the wrong way, but i don't understand the point of this message....
The weekly appearance is almost a problem for me ...
You can always buy it once a month....
And "a circle a day" is not little for a mainly roleplaying character.
Come on! A circle is more or less like a single ORE.... not too difficoult to get in my opinion! Plus, i think everybody knows yet that i GIVE IT FOR FREE if you don't have the money!
But it gives me OOC a good hint how much really happens during the week of absence.
Why OOC? ??? You character (In Game) opens the journal and get's an IN GAME overview of the week....
So don't get told roleplaying is dead
Dead? Truly i got so many stories to tell that i have always to choose what to publish....
Anyway thanks for all kind words and for all support! Is really needed is such a hard operation like a weekly journal! Thanks to everybody!
-
Well ... then take that as "early morning reply". ;)
-
This newspaper is the biggest proof of how roleplay is still alive which is called "dead" by some forum trolls *coughs* peeps... who dont even play anymore. Just read it you will know what goes on.
I missed a few weeks of the game but I still know what happened all over yilakum so the newspaper serves its purpose in a big way so 1 cirlce is good enuff price for it I think.
Thnx Raikana for such a great idea
-
I have all 7 issues so far, going for number 8, [tomarrow?]
And "a circle a day" is not little for a mainly roleplaying character.
Come on! A circle is more or less like a single ORE.... not too difficoult to get in my opinion! Plus, i think everybody knows yet that i GIVE IT FOR FREE if you don't have the money!
OOC'ly 1 circle is not a lot of money at all, its worth 250 tria
but you need to think of it in a few different ways
1.) If you do quests, you learn that it is indeed a lot of money, as for a BD guard, makes 25k a year, there are other quests that talk about pay, i believe.
2.) you can compare marketing, In real life, you can buy a loaf of bread, [in the US] for around 2.50$ in planeshift you can get one for 12 tria i believe, thats not a lot more.. so it also shows how little money an average working man would get.
3.) If you noticed, 1 circle will buy food for an IC week or two..so that also shows
-
Iirc, I've heard talk of updating the wages and such in-game before, but it's probably a minor detail. Player economy will always fluctuate and if a player-made newspaper should cost way less than a circle, we should all sell our wares for less too - if you were a BD guard, making 25k a year, would you pay, say, twice that for a sword that'll quite possibly see enough battle to destroy it before you've had time to save up enough to buy a new one?
I'm admittedly not up to date on my weapon prices as they stand in-game right now, but I'm sure you get the point...
-
/me kindly tries to direct this thread back on-topic :offtopic:
-
My guess is that if this is a medieval like settings that most citizens of the Dome could not read. So to compare it to a modern day rag that uses a printing press is not a good comparison. Each Journal would be hand copied like monks did with other texts prior to the printing press. The cost of a hand copied bible in those times was so costly as to only belong to the most wealthy. The same is probably the case for the Journal under the Dome.
- Nova
-
The 8° issue is on sale!
As we do every 4 issues, we gave a present to the first customers, a little vocabulary of Klyran as talked in the street.
-
Each Journal would be hand copied
Jayose has a "copy" spell for books! Raikana uses something similar!

It's not specified in the quest that mentions it, IIRC, although I would guess it's either Blue (since ink is liquid) or Azure (since books are a visual medium, and manipulating appearances is one of Azure's specialties). Yliakum also enjoys a technological level where a printing press would be completely within their technological reach, judging from things like the Winch, although I doubt anyone would bother to invent one when magic can do the job just fine.
Personally I think it's reasonable for Raikana to charge 1 circle for the paper. Yeah, it's not totally in line with the settings' guideline about pricing, but the player economy is always going to be a little inflated because there aren't that many producers, and there aren't that many efficient ways for PC merchants to compete directly with each other, so...
-
When my character makes a new copy of a chronicle the mechanics say Write to book not Magically copy a new book. Then within the Write to book window there is an option to Load from a file what you want written to the book. No mention of magic on my screen. No printing press about while my character is doing it.
- Nova
-
I guess I would consider the quest more authoritative than the mechanics wording, as the settings department is involved in the former but not necessarily the latter. Actually, now that I think about it, there are multiple quests where copies of extensive documents are produced very quickly, which is completely implausible if they aren't using magic to do it - copying a book out by hand takes a long freaking time. Besides, I can't think of any solid evidence suggesting literacy is rare on Yliakum - at least half the NPCs have quests that clearly establish they can read and write, and I can't think of any NPCs who've been established as actually illiterate - which strongly implies books are commonplace and relatively cheap.
So, yeah. The Journal is the price it is because Raikana wants to charge a circle and her customers are willing to pay it. Sounds reasonable to me :P

Is this....irony? I say this beacause a Game Master told me! I'm not inventing anything!
-
I've done that quest like, five times. There is a spell Jayose uses to copy books.

The 9° issue will be on sale tomorrow!
Thanks to all the people that supports the paper with monetary and moral help!
We also need help to fill up the journal, to sell it etc... if someone wanna help, in any way, building the next issue, we will be glad! Thanks!

well, i have an advertisement! i haven't found you online so i'm sending you a pm here

This has already been discussed elsewhere: Cartography skill (http://www.hydlaaplaza.com/smf/index.php?topic=38583.0) ... my guess was Brown way (due to the materialization, possibly based on the Summon glyph).

In-game paper issues (http://www.hydlaaplaza.com/smf/index.php?topic=38831.0)
-
Is it true Raikana left? Will there be more issues?
-
I know the newspaper topic is closed....I just want to say what a joy it was playing in-game with you, Raikana, and that it breaks my heart to lose someone of such vitality and freshness. I'll hope that a day will come when you choose to re-visit our community in whatever identity. Take care, friend.
-
I strongly agree with Ketta. *Sniff* *Sniff* I'm you'r biggest fan! :'(
-
Isn't there anyone else from this Guild? Was it just a one person effort?
It's never good when an effort depends on only one variable. I should know it. If there are other players in this guild, I'd like to discuss some sort of way to keep these issues flowing.
If there aren't... Well, it'll have to be postponed.
-
We should have stated the backstory to this guild:
Eurac was selling house of games, so Raikana and I bought it, split the costs, and turned it into Games and Publishing Co. Once Raikana left, Games and Publishing Co went back to Eurac and is now House of Games once again. Remind me to get my tria back for it by the way ;)

This paper needs to stay one way or another. This brought life and a wonderfully unique aspect to our daily RP around Hydlaa, and I know I'm not the only one who misses the annual issues already... I'm up for helping, my dear Sangwa, just let me know ;)
-
I'll try to think of something. Maybe a weekly issue. I'll study the structure here and do something less complex (since I've had a glimpse already) then I'll reply to this post with my idea.
-
One suggestion may be to break the Journal into sections; much like many modern day papers. Travel, Business, Religion, Comics/Puzzles; you know the drill. The Editor could then take on writers which want to write for a particular section of the Journal. They could then submit their writings to the Editor and he/she/kra could pick and choose what to put out in any particular issue; depending on space available as well as copy available to them. Some publications may have some sections missing due to lack of copy or, more hopefully, too much copy available to other sections.
In this way the gruelling work required to put out the Journal could be distributed among many writers; with, hopefully, a shorter burn out rate than we have witnessed with the previous Editor.
- Nova
-
I have one of every copy Sangwa. Usually more then one, I'll let you borrow them. Who knows, it can even be a whole section of the scholars force in the Dark Empire? :sorcerer:
-
No section for the paper. Not unless we make up some others of our own and put there in the middle, so it doesn't seem like we're honouring something that isn't Imperial.
Anyway, the idea is good Novacadian. I doubt there will be enough writers for most of those section, but heck, one can only try. Though, to be sure, this next month might be too hard for me to jump in and do anything.

The 11° issue is on sales from today!
Here we are again! The new editor is Zakena Plip, the niece of Raikana.

I honestly can't wait till I get unbanned to hear about these famous journals.
-
Raikana, never mind the trolls! It's good that you're back with your amazing journal!
-
Is the paper still alive?
-
It's in stand by.... i'm having some hard work in real life lately... sorry to all the readers! Soon we'll be back with the 13th issue of the G&T Journal. If you have articles to send, please do it!! (thanks for the article LigH!) .
;)
-
The best of luck with your RL work, though I'm sure it'll go good with your capacity of dedication. Ask Gartheiz about stuff when you come around, since his relations improved with Raikana he'll easily tell her what has been happening around. Though some facts might be blurry.
-
Despite being very busy until August, I plan to make the number 13 of "Guilds & Traders Journal" shortly. If any friend wants to help, updating me about what happened since the beginning of the year, I'd be very grateful. As soon as I can I will try to spend some time in the game. See you soon! :flowers:
-
I'm having problems with planeshift for windows (i use XP). It crashes on start... :@#\
-
run directly the client
-
Let's get an appointment in IRC, Raikana, and talk about your startup issues. There have been several known and solved problems, chances are good that we will get your client running again.
Suggest a time.
-
(Sorry to everyone for bumping this topic!)
Wow, it feels like just a few months since this journal started, not over a year! Anyways, I'm not sure if Raikana is still on the forums or not, but maybe we can attempt to persuade her to come back. Miss the RP and the journals...
-
Hallo Mekora!!
I miss you too!
I wanted to come back to play but i have a serious problem with PS on my new PC (Windows, unfortunately >:( ) and my time is really short because of my work/family. Anyway... please, let the other friends know that i think about them and hope they are doing well.
That said, if someone wants to keep on the Guilds & Traders Journal... I'll not merely encourage him/her, but I'll offer my help and support through this forum as, if needed, the G&TJ library footage or any other information related to the journal.
A sincere greeting.
Raikana
-
Many miss you, Raikana.
May Christmas solve your problems, if possible.
-
actually, sometimes I think I could give it a try, because the journal is something that is missing in PS. At least in my opinion. But I am not sure if I am fit to do it. Besides I don't have an idea on how much time you need for it and if I have that time...
-
Hallo LigH... Marry Christmas to you too! (the solution for my problems would be a new PC... ::) )
@Jilata:
If you want to do it like i used to do, you need to use every time you spend on game, or almost... Raikana had not skills, belongings, fancy weapons etc... just the basic quests to get the drifter and... the newspaper! Anyway the time you spend literally "making" the paper (writing, editing etcc) goes from a full day or even one and a half each week (or each month if you decide to do so...).
-
Not if two people do it! I personally don't have the time to write that much every week, but I'd be willing to write a few articles and come up with jokes :D
-
Well... first i need to make the game run... :'( but... if i accomplish that, we could try to organize ourselves and start the guild again, better then before! If we all put a little time on it we can make it run. You help me finding the news and the content and duplicating the copies, i take charge of the newspaper management, the editing and eventually the sales. I only need help because alone i cannot do it again! If you want the paper back i can offer my experience, but this time we need to do it right... a guild, members, and organization... and the Guilds & Traders Journal can be again the best newspaper of the Dome!
-
I've been away from ps for a while and haven't heard about the Guild & Traders Journal before. I'd love to be a part of it, if you get things organised. I certainly have a character who is a little connected and can get you some juicy stories.
Good luck :)
-
Raikana: I could help you. I can't spare 1 1/2 days per week before I finished my exams, but I can definitely help. As you said, with two people it would be easier for both.
-
Glad to hear from you again Raikana. If I can find more time in the game, I certainly offer to you my help. Missed you too :) And best of luck with your computer problems.
-
I can write an article or two from time to time as well Rainkana, and I do hope you can come back ig!!! \\o// \\o// \\o//
RR
-
Raikana is back! <Klyros happy dance>
Will guild subscriptions be available? We would love to keep up our library properly. (If you deliver it we will feed you :))
-
A big hug to you all! :flowers: :)
Is moving to see how much the G&TJ is important to you! That's the right spirit! Till now i'm not able to join the game but this situation will be solved soon or later... even if i'll need to get another PC!
So... let's start to organize from here! I'll be updating the first post of this thread with the news about the rebirth of the G&TJ, listing the new members of the group. Yes... group.
I thought about it in these days... no guilds. It's impossible to manage the journal as a guild, at least for now. The main reason is that no one is willing to leave his guild to join such a small and powerless guild like this one. Anyway, even if what just said is true, that's another undeniable truth: the best journalist is from no guild. That's because he has no master to obey, other than the truth. Plus, a journalist from no guild can talk to everyone and everyone will talk to him. If you are not agree, try to ask about his new plans to a follower of Dakkru while you are from Bounty Hunters guild... (by the way... it's still Earowo the guild master?) ::)
That said, i think we must restart this as a simple cross-guild group, where everyone has concrete tasks to accomplish. If you wish to help in this please read the guidelines and tell here which task (or tasks) you'll like to do and how much time you can spend on it.
A last thing... I would like to propose to print on a monthly basis, as many people (like LighH) proposed long time ago. This can be better for now. The important is to keep a constant flow.
So... here we are. I wait for your comments, ideas, suggestions, subscriptions but most of all for your will to get this paper running again!
A sincere hug.
Raikana.
-

Naa, The guild will always be important to me, but atm, im takin a long break from PS, I'll prolly be back if 5.9 ever comes out (or 6.0, whichever happens first) Or If I get a new computer, so atm Derator is the leader, unless he gave that away, as well, Its great to hear that your back, im sure i was your best customer >.>
Anyway, save me one of every copy to read when i get back :3

The newspaper of the Dome is back! 13° issue is now around!
I finally managed to solve my computer problems and could join planeshift again!
Edit: The editor is now Zakena Plip, the niece of Raikana.
-
Great to see the Journal back in action!
-
Indeed, welcome back! It's great to have an IC newspaper in circulation again!
-
Thanks!
Issue N.14 is now out!
PS: I have a question: how can I have the journal publishing day (the 3rd saturday of every month) listed in the EVENTS section of the site? It would be helpful to remind this recurrence to the players... :D
-
Please contact Sarva in this regard (e.g. in the IRC channel #planeshift-gmtalk on Freenode).

SARVA: "We generaly put events on the calendar that are events which are open to all interested players. I'm not sure that the printing of the journal quite qualifies." ???
-
0) Forget the event calendar. Few people make use of that calendar anyway ;P
1) Make an announcement in forum. Put an advertisement in every city, ask some GM for locking the books/scrolls.
2) Profit.
-
Here am I, back to planeshift as soon as my life let me!
Since I've got so little time lately, i've been working on something that can bring the newspaper alive with help and intervention of the players.
Since the last rewriting of the Newspaper's Guidelines, I've let it clear that i wish to give it to the community, so now here I am with the:
Guilds & Traders Journal Online Editor.
You can find it here: http://gtjeditor.hostei.com/ (http://gtjeditor.hostei.com/).
It has two levels of permissions (Edtor and User). You can use it to check the old issues of the newspaper, and, if you are interested, you could apply to get editor permissions (for now i'm just thinking of give this privilege to the Knowledge Seekers, but anyone can apply).
If you just want to take it and start develop a newspaper your own, please feel free to do so by downloading the source code i've made available at the home page.
Let me know what do you think. Personally, I've been using this tool to help me with the newspaper, so IT IS useful (at least, if you learn how to use it).
-
Good to see you Raikana! I am notoriously bad at tech but will look at the editor link and see if I can help at all! Happy (USA) Thanksgiving!
RR
-
I sent you the account info to get into the editor. Let's see what do you think!

Hallo friends! I just wanted to let you know that i'll be publishing N°15 on September 13. If you have some announce to do, if you want to be on the traders list or in the guild list or if you have some information that can lead to a good article, please let me know in time.
-
You have to tell everyone about the new RCD! If you haven't seen it, drop by or hail Waesed.
-
Good to have you back again! Looking forward to the next edition!
-
About the RCD: I can't find Waesed online. Please, if you are in the forum and you are part of the staff, send me the text of the announcement and i'll publish it!
-
I updated the guidelines in the first post. ;)
-
you should have a nice next edition, with RCD seizure, Camp Banished massacres, :detective:
-
Since I can't play for a while, Please spare a copy for me. Someday...
-
I hope the Knowledge Seekers are able to maintain their archive, at least, by continuing the support for the Journal. Erelenga may not be able to attend the coming book fair, at least not for long, but there is more staff trying to contact the publishers and renew our relations.
-
@wocib: camp banned massacres? :o that's new for me!
@Boeven: you can always ask Zakena for a reprint ;)
@LigH: i met a member of the KS lately... Aniroho. He didn't knew about our agreement. I may need some help during the book fair (mostly to carry things); please let me know if some member of KS will be present and available to help. ;) Thanks!
That said, i'll be at the Novari Book Fair distributing the next issue of the G&T Journal, the number 17! Hope to see you there!
-
I'm sure it will be really interesting to read !
-
Anihiro is our newest student, so he may not yet know about our relations in the past. But we discussed this topic in the campus as well, so I am quite certain one or another member with a longer presence will be available. Just not me, I fear, I will be traveling. Let's hope Tuathanach knows about it.

with zero economy: who trades?
-
@LigH: I already got helped by one of your guildmates! Thanks!
@Sirett: I'm always up for a trade... but anyways... Guilds & Traders Journal is just a name... it has a 'traders list', yes, but it also has other stuff like news. ;)
