Title: Advanced Character Creation World:
Post by: Zeraph on August 25, 2004, 10:27:27 am
I just had this idea, it is to create a ?offline? world were people go on Char creation in witch there is no-one else & you can customize every aspect of your Char. It is like char creation only you can move around & test out some combat skills & jobs in a offline world as a sort of a character test world to see what you like? you have a large customization gui window & you can instantly change everything about your char including gender/race/skin/hair & all that stuff, & you can launch a combat demo mode to show you how stuff will be like if you choose to weald a sword you may like a bow better after seeing how it works.

I think this could also be a very nice place to make a tutorial if the user chooses?

The sort of thing I am talking about is a small world-file that can be loaded quickly & doesn?t require internet access to work, this will ensure that it is loaded extremely quickly on char creation? the way it would work is you play in this small world & when you check the ?Test Bow? button you immediately have a bow & can start shooting targets or whatever, & for swords & spells the same, probably it would be a indoor room with lots of ?dummies? for testing combat with different weapons & some odd things like animals to show you what is involved in animal training & a small part of a mine to show mining(a little bit of all the professions to help you decide which one is ?the best??)

Offline modes means singleplayer, and singleplayer means no server to verify whatever you have is correct. Thus, if you have a offline mode, you have cheats that are as simple to do as writing a post here. So, no. That wont happen.

Who cares if anyone cheats in this offline bubble world it would be pointless & it would only effect the person who modded it because it is offline, I?m not saying make char creation offline, keep the server checks & whatever like what we have now, it is merely an expansion of the little window that shows what you look like & possibly an offline tutorial world? lets see it would be like this only were you can see how the char looks while moving/fighting/healing (or whatever profession):
Only you can walk around in a small world & test out what you think you would like, also to prevent dead-link it would be nice (if they haven?t fixed the problem) to save the char creation data in a temporary file then if it goes dead-link then auto fill in the form & so you don?t have to create your char all over again?

shouldn\'t new spells..and better bows, weapons etc. etc. be some sort of uhmz.. secret? So that when you get a new spell you think \"wow this thing is so damn cool\" instead of \"yeah, i tested this spell in the offline world...*bored*\"

it could be called zero level training. basically where you teach the newbie which end of the sword to stick in people, how not to pin their foot to ground with an arrow, etc. you put the first level of the common weapons and spells there.

or it could be a place where a more experienced player works on the twitch skills involved with a weapon.

it wouldn\'t be a place where you could level up your skills, since none of the data about the training would be sent back to the server.

i kind of like the idea.

Exactly, it would only demonstrate basic skills that any new Right-out-of-the-spawn Char has access to, it can demonstrate glyphs because one of the advantages is to have glyphs @ Char creation, non of this will be uploaded to the server, only the char creation data such as hair/skin/race etc? non of the spells that you need to do quests to get, only the ones you can use immediately after Char creation, it can also give a tutorial on how to use the basic gui/controls & such? :]

Heh I think it is a great idea.  Mean that certain senarios such as \"/shout Should I be a warrior or a mage\" coming from new players would be easily dealt with :D

Stupid n00bs...

Yes, I also think it\'s a good idea. The char would be created the usual way (i.e. online on the game server), but then a copy of it would optionally be uploaded to the client, which then runs a local, minimal server engine fot the tutorial world, where the player can then have their local copy to play with (good for network outages :) ). The local char would under no circumstances get uploaded back to the real server (i.e., it is one-way only). One could make this option available for non-freshly created chars, as well, so that ppl. can test their new gear if they want. They would be able to grab a copy of their chars, basically, with nothing more or less than what they already possess. It\'s a way to keep the n00b mages from casting \"Gas of Vengeance\" or the n00b warrior from using the \"uber sword of d00m\" at Hydlaa Plaza just \"to see what it does\". :)

Yep..if the higher lvl weapons and all that aren\'t available then i think its a fun idea.. like if you use a bow..you can get skilled in shooting with it..(not GETTING skills).  So that can be pretty useful.

Hmm, interesting. It would help out the Noobs a bit...The world shouldn\'t be big though, just a small test room or something...

I\'d like to clarify this: the player would learn how to use the interface, like how \"shooting with the bow\" works in terms of things to do / prepare / commands to give. The character, OTOH, would not change at all. Maybe there would even be unlimited items available, as long as the character has at least one of them when it is downloaded, and the basic things (like normal arrows) could be available in any case.

Like a trainer. Gives the player the ability to control the client properly so that they will not get blasted just because they didn\'t know how to quickly access the \"flee\" command. :)
This might even reduce the need for an ingame noob world. Then again, it would not, because the noobs will just hit the \"enter game\" button. :(
Still, it can be useful for those who wish to get familiar with everything without making fools of themselves falling off bridges or whatever. :)

I think it should be small, no need for a large world if it is only for Char Creation, of course you could have your already created Chars & load them in the world, of course nothing would be uploaded back to the server, if you want to increase your target practice skills for a bow & arrow on rabbits or one of the in-game target practice ranges that we will probably have & the in-game ones you can increase your skill-points but in any offline world such as this test world, no skill-points will be recorded because that obviously ads up to cheating like Grono said?

it would be a great way for the public to help in testing stuff out (a.k.a. lvl 20 char vs. t-rex, who would win) maybe you could have a way to send information about weapons, armor, and creatures back to the makers so they can see if this critter was too powerful for where they placed it, or if this bow is too powerful for the game, and so forth.
Title:
Post by: Magerranger on August 28, 2004, 08:03:15 pm
not a flame but you cant have a lvl20 charicter the game is going to be skill based :) and a.k.a means also known as not e.g. which is example

to make this \'test room\' wouldent you just need a new small sports hall type map with climbing wall and swimming pool (so you could practice those befor going into the real game) and load all the origonal game data but deleting lines in the code that say you get better at skills.

But having a test fight mode with ingame type monsters wouldnt be right because people would just use that to see if they can beat a monster befor actualy fighting it.
because then none would ever die... except in pvp and quests bosses would suck if youve practice fought it 20 times befor you attempt it for real.

It could probable have npc instructors that say stuff like \"to climb the wall press the CLIMB button and the DIRECTION you wish to climb\" and wooden test dumbies that you can learn to cast spells and fight against but plz no real monsters
Title: this just is a very good idea in my opinion
Post by: THAPRINZE on August 28, 2004, 09:14:26 pm
yeah..unlimited items?? is a no. unless its only like the cheapest/weakest arrows or something.  Also i dont think it should be used to get familiar with the monsters and see how it can be killed the easiest way, cause then it indeed would be to simple if you\'d go online.

And the dummies is good allthough for archers and perhaps mages we should have moving targets..in case they have to \'shoot\' to attack like in an FPS.  Ofcourse this wont matter if the game would have some sort of auto-lock on.
Title: I agree:
Post by: Zeraph on August 29, 2004, 01:03:17 pm
I think it should only have basic weapons/spells/animal training stuff,
But I would be nice to ether have dummies, or just basic monsters, like the ones that do not attack you, also I would only like to see this world while making your Char, sort of wanted it to be a way for you to test out what you like, how things look & what kind of weapon/spells you would like to start out with, like basic tutorials to help you know which buttons to press to swing sword & how to use ranged weapons & all that, only basic weapons any newbie has access to right after Char creation? it would probably replace Char creation in the way that you wet up & test your char here, how hair & cloths move while swinging a sword? instead of a flat view of that your char looks like you can actually see it in action & decide what you like best based on testing everything instead of guessing what you think you will like?

HAHA..riiiight.  If you just know if you look good before you\'re going online,  yeah i guess thats the most important thing :D

nah...but its just an useful idea i\'d say. This character creation world.

Well all this can be done in the arena if the Devs wanted to do that.

Easy solution. Upon creating the first character per account, just do a suggestion box or something that states a tutorial is highly recommended. Least then they were warned. Heh heh.

look, train offling for you\'re Multiplayer char won\'t work, because the info need to be writed somewere in a file, and that means you can cheat and change some stats etc.

I also don\'t see the point in singleplayer, MP is much more fun :P If you want to play a RPG go play Zelda or something, with a good story, and a game engine build for Singleplayer. But PS = MMORPG, nor RPG. Training missions or something could be odne online too, and than you can communicate with others that are doing the newbie training. you could also ask other people to help you abit.

No just keep Ps online ;)

Toadhead, this isn?t about actually training your char offline? no skill gains will be transferred to the server, it is just to replace the already offline processes of Char creation, but only Char creation data will be transferred to the server (which will be server-checked like are current Char creation data...), all training done offline will count towards nothing in-game? & the tutorials are just to show you the controls & how the systems work etc. as I have explained before, no offline-skill-points-gains will be transferred to server because they will not exist.

As Zeraph has stated, im going to engrain this into everyone\'s eyeballs. And no, you can\'t look away.

CHARACTERS CREATED OFF-LINE DO NOT GO ONLINE.

EVER.
[/u]

It is a totally self-contained world which is fully independant of the main game server!
Characters created and played will not go onto the server!
It\'s just a \"run around and do whatever you want with your test character\" and after you\'re done screwing around, you can go onto the actual server and setup a NEW character.

That said, this idea has a really good deal of promise to it. You could choose what you want to do, and go through further screens to define what you want to try out.

If you want to create a character, you would go through the process, and would have the opion to save the setup as a \"xxxx.txt\" file so you could go into multiplayer and load that settings file; of course, the file would be checked over to ensure that everything is legit otherwise it\'ll give a error (if humans can\'t fly (which they dont) and the xxxx.txt file specified that this one could, the server would say \"That is not a valid character file\")

If you want to test the red way of magic without possibly screwing over your actual mage then you could say to test skills -> red way of magic and create a character with the beginner red-way spells. Of course, this character could never go online, and when you quit that character is destroyed.

A excellent way for a hard-core miner to see if magic is a second option, or how that character would\'ve looked like if it had torso-skin #2.
Title: You could do that,
Post by: Zeraph on August 30, 2004, 08:22:59 pm
But that is not really what I had originally thought of,

As of right now, Char creation is offline, that is why you need to ?Upload? your char data to the server, however after it is uploaded the server does checks to make sure your char has no unfair advantages. So what we could do what Saphire suggested & have a small separate offline 1 player world, but I was thinking that it would replace Char creation, not just be something you can do before, if it replaced Char creation then you would have no need to have a xxx.txt Char file (because those are extremely easy to hack).

What I was thinking is that you can customize your char just like Char creation while playing in this offline world, no exp ? no skill-points gains ? & server checks to verify if the char has the right about of points just like it does now. & only basic weapons/spells/animals will be available, only stuff you can get right after Char creation, ?newbie stuff? I?ll have to play CB to get more detailed into this because I hear the Char creation is going to be a lot different.

There really would be no point in creating Chars for the offline world because you wouldn?t have much to do, basically beet up dummies & there is no exp so you cant increase your skills any so there is no point & no way for anyone to cheat. You can?t train offline, I wanted merely a place for maybe a tutorial & to check out if you like bow&arrow or a sword or just want to be a miner, before actually creating a char & being disappointed & ether ask like ?are mages better then warriors? or making another Char just to see what you like best?

The thing is if you have it so that it uploads the character to the server, it is entirely possible that someone will see something that was over looked in the test room (aka single player). Remember this is a completely open source program, which means anyone can see the code that checks the character for illegal properties. Also there are certain things that can have any value (ie gold, gems, ore) that they can mod and have more then enough of to ruin the economy when they load the char into the online realm (do you really want to have someone loading a char with 9,999,999 gold, gems, arrows, and ore).

I think a single player world is a great idea, so long as it has no bearing in the online world. It would work great for orienting newbies and testing stuff. Downloading char spects from the world seems alright, but uploading seems way to dangerous to me.

check out the words that are big bold and underlined, in the post up about three. and check out the general content of the people who actively support this.

basically you download your character, nothing gets uploaded back to the server. zip zilch nada, not even a trace packet.

besides the server will only accept certain information when the new characters are uploaded.  send any other information and either the server junks/ignores/logs it or it crashes the server. actually it should be logged becuase that is indicative of a hacked client.

so rephrased simply. the olw does not affect your character or the universe.
Title: stat calculator
Post by: SirTokesalot on September 08, 2004, 06:11:23 am
u could have a stat calculator.
this way you could try diffent stats and items to plan your char and see def and dmg ect...
this would be a small sepert progeram that would only be a sim of your stats. not for hacking, just smart planning.
Title: Actually,
Post by: Zeraph on September 09, 2004, 03:18:48 am
Actually this sort of split into 2 ideas, an offline one-player mode & my original intention of a expansion of the char creation, someone could probably compile a offline version of ps & you can change the values to give you stuff in a offline version of ps, but it would be extremely boring because there would be no-one there to rp with. But anyway:

My original idea was to have a char creation gui window that would change that char?s appearance / weapons (depending on what the user chooses in the gui window) stuff like race/skin/whatever, it would be just as easy to cheat with regular char creation as of now, in-fact it may make it more difficult to sort through the additional code, however this is pointless anyway as the have pointed out that the server checks all char creation dada uploaded to the server. It wouldn?t really be a ?test world? more of a ?Character creation world? were you can pre-view what you look like fighting so you don?t go creating 3 Chars until you get what you want. + Maybe we could stick in a tutorial place for you to test out what basic weapon you like & what buttons to press to use them, basic stuff like that, then after you have fully customized your char (similar to current char creation or that of cb) you upload your char to the server. All the data that it being transferred is the same as char creation; there is already server checks for that sort of cheating so it is no more possible with this.

However I wouldn?t really use a test world that you can download a char to from te server & test out weapons / whatever, that would be boring & I could test out weapons in PS & actually get skill-points for it. However, if we are going to have more then one server, I would like the ability to transfer my char between them & not just be stuck on the one server but that is later on?
