Title: CB Alpha Test Starts!
Post by: leinir on September 20, 2004, 07:29:30 pm
And so, it begins! This is what we have been waiting for :D From the PlaneShift homepage (http://www.planeshift.it/main_01.html):

Quote
Our internal testing is going well, we fixed many bugs and improved the usability of our GUI. There are still areas to test, but we decided that the time has come to release CB to a subset of users that will help us testing. There will be a period of \"closed alpha tests\", starting from this Saturday (25 Sept.). The people included in the list of alpha testers is still to determine, we will pick some (10-15) of the most loyal fans. We decided to start with a set of players to avoid too many redundant bugs notifications. The next step will be to add another set of players (20-30). This can happen after one or two weeks after the first round started. None of the activities done in this closed test phases will modify the data of MB database (names, stats, crystals, items, etc...).
It\'s a great news for us and we hope also for you.

So, begin your nagging to get access ;D
Title:
Post by: Moogie on September 20, 2004, 07:39:24 pm
Just a warning to anyone who intends to come nag for access: It is a well known fact that in any project running closed-testing, the more you nag, the less your chances are. It\'s like asking to become a GM/MOD. The usual policy is \"you ask, and we put you on the blacklist\". :P
Title:
Post by: AendarCallenlasse on September 20, 2004, 07:47:43 pm
Moogie just doesn\'t want any competition ;)
Well I suppose this means CB this even closer to release.

Uhm...Why not compile the CVS and run your own \"closed testing\"?
Title: Yes!
Post by: Zeraph on September 20, 2004, 07:51:10 pm
I am so happy that I may do something crazy to get access to CB early, like start making monster & Animal models + Cal3D Animations like crazy.

I wonder who is \"The Most Loyal Fan\"?  :))

This is stupendous The kind of news I have been waiting for!
Title:
Post by: gogg on September 20, 2004, 07:53:28 pm
What if we have some qualifications the devs might not know about?
Title:
Post by: dfryer on September 20, 2004, 08:03:01 pm
For this phase of testing it is more important that the people involved are well-known by the devs than having particular development/testing skills.

Here is a screen of a Cal3D test I did on the new \"stonebm\" model that ships with the CVS...

G*d dam !!

I just digged up my forum account, it is the real first very very good news I have been waiting for since....my last post...that is since ...err....a long time

I can already say, the whole Circle of Legends is waiting for the release ; keep on the good work devs !

And be careful when selecting your people, because infos too much spread around the web could simply \"kill\" your good work (as you said, the less we know, the more we enjoy after the release).

Title:
Post by: RussianVodka on September 20, 2004, 09:03:32 pm
Thats great that CB is out in closed alpha. But i was wondering. Those of us that dont get to play it, will we be on lockdown from all the info like we have been for the past long time? Or will the testers be able to speak of what they see?
Title:
Post by: DepthBlade on September 20, 2004, 09:16:12 pm
Hooray for progress!!

So...the most loyal fans? Are you just going to pick the most popular or how is this going to work?
Title:
Post by: XpYtZ on September 20, 2004, 10:12:19 pm
They will do what they said: Pick the most loyal fans.
Mostly that\'s the folks like Moogie who are either on the boards or IRC most of the day. They don\'t just want a bunch of fan-boys running around looking at things. They want folks that are going to \'test\' the system by trying to climb walls and the like. They are probably going to open it up to the people that are current GMs/Moderators and a select few others.
I\'m just damn glad that it has got to this phase and am looking forward --->
Title: To the great times in MB
Post by: Reikar on September 20, 2004, 10:41:40 pm
*sniff* I\'ll miss MB. All the fun adventures with my friends, collecting crystals, running up the walls, falling off the map, walking through walls, climbing into cages.

Title:
Post by: Quwaar on September 20, 2004, 11:20:31 pm
picked or not picked, not the less CB is close :)
Title:
Post by: Kuiper7986 on September 20, 2004, 11:36:09 pm
It doesn\'t matter if your picked so don\'t worry. Think about it this way, when they release it to the public it\'ll already have that many less bugs in it.

So its not a big deal if your chosen or not. It\'s not the end of the world. Anyways it says a week or two later, they\'ll add more people. So if you don\'t get chosen, calm down! :)
Title:
Post by: Levski on September 20, 2004, 11:45:40 pm
Great news!

Keep up the good work devs!  Of course, the real treat would also be to play with the devs, I think that would be the most fun... :)
Title:
Post by: Stydracos on September 20, 2004, 11:54:40 pm
Well this is a welcome surprise, Congratz to the lucky few who manage to help the dev team find bugs and test CB!

You and the next group of testers will be the envy of us all :D!

It\'s been said that screenshots and information will probably be restricted, and alpha testers might have to sign some sort of NDA. The only one who can give an official word on that, however, is Talad.
Title:
Post by: spawnman on September 21, 2004, 12:40:10 am
well, congrats to whoever is chosen! at least *I* dont have to wonder if i get chosen, since im not exactly active :)

but if you want to have a tester for low-end hardware, i\'m your man. :)               anyway, good work guys.
Title:
Post by: Desnonroth on September 21, 2004, 12:46:00 am
hmmm... That\'s bad, because that restriction makes the await even more unbearable (

PS None of the activities done in this closed test phases will modify the data of MB database (names, stats, crystals, items, etc...). (C)    Does that means that the crystals we found before will stay with us in future?

Rumour tells of no conversion. Don\'t take my word on it.

Oh, and I don\'t think anything should be leaked at all. Even the smallest screenshot. Spoils the suprise for everyone else.  :)

Hmm

Kada, Xordan, Cad, Aendar, Moogie, Draklar (jk), Kixie, Xenia, Hevrah, Golmir, Gronomist ...hmm I can\'t think of any others I would expect to be alpha\'s

Either way I rather be in the second batch or with the main group

To Devs: You guys rock...and are probably enjoying your popularity eh :P

To Alpha Testers: Don\'t do drugs, don\'t tell me anything and kill much buglike thingies (like Seperot :P )
Title:

I hope this testing takes from somewhere between 2 - 10 weeks otherwise, too many good things at once = bad :(
When I saw this thread I was thinking \"OH no! Not now!\" heh
Hope you testers find all the bugs :)

I am guessing that list you just posted is lacking the actual players that spend 24/7 ingame...those are just the known names..people like Hevrah, Kada, Agara, and other members should get the go ahead. Also other not so known players that will actually test..and if you have been here longer doesn\'t mean you should get the chance...it just means you signed up first. There is alot of people who signed up then left for like a year and just come back or post once a week or go ingame once a month. Then there is those players that have joined recently and dedicate their entire life to hanging out on P.S.

I am not trying to get myself in(I don\'t have the time ^^)..just don\'t want stupid things like your registration date and your name to affect other peoples chances who have spent that much more time.

EDIT: Monketh should be one on the list if he had the time to do so, he is well established roleplayer and has a love for it like no other ^^

Oh yes, definitely good news.

Unfortunately I haven;t been able to succesfully compile MB for ages so I\'m not really in a position to ask to help with the Alpha. (My Linux install now requires too many legacy libraries to compile MB)

I\'ll just have to hope that CB compiles nicely with the newer libraries and I\'ll see you all when the open-beta comes around :D

On the other hand, non-testing people will have more time hunting crystals and preparing for alpha...
Title:

Very nice :D Good to see things are moving forward steadily.

Just out of curiosity, since the first phase of testing is going to be for dedicated fans, will the second be the same, or will it target a larger range of individuals to test out the extreme cases of hardware/OS (low to high end systems, Win 98-XP, different Linux distros etc.)?
Title:

WOOT! CB! As I said..... Oct 28 Youll see :) (that would be the open CB date)

*gets in line to enter closed testing* hmm I wonder how far I am from the front.....
*looks ahead* O_O
*shoots himself in the head*

Oh and I could be the win xp service pack 2 tester :)
or the so cal tester, the 15 year old tester, the born ---MAY 26--- tester, the 5\' 8\" tester, the armenian tester, the tester named Ara tester, the metal loving tester, that one tester, the 10th grade tester................. :D

It so happens that the people who joined recently don\'t know the devs very well, and vice versa. Plenty of the old people however hang out with the devs every day. Besides, just because many don\'t feel like spending 6+ hours per day in MB, doesn\'t mean they\'re not around and it doesn\'t mean they\'re not dedicated and loyal to PS.

Hang on.. so is this alpha testing for the beta release? In which case you would perform alpha testing then beta testing for the beta release?
OR is it alpha testing for the final game, in which you would perform alpha testing, beta testing then have the actual *full release*
Title:
Post by: Kiva on September 21, 2004, 09:59:41 am
It\'s the closed testing before the Alpha version is released. Then eventually there will be a closed test before the Beta version is released, as well as there will be more closed tests before other major releases.

Great news, what everyone was talking about in chat last night makes more sense now =) I look forward to the release, Great news! =)

Sure, I would say that each and every guild member (of any guild btw) is already a real loyal person but... sure devs don\'t know everybody.
They simply can\'t take someone they don\'t see often ingame (me for instance)
On the other hand I\'m tempted to say \"hey I study computer science in 3rd year, I\'m admin on a french website\" blablabla but what\'s the need of it? I haven\'t played MB since something like november 2003.

Lots of people are in the same situation. I\'ll wait. Like 99 % of the people ;)

Note : If you need someone pretty reliable for the alpha, don\'t forget Sabrewulf, he was there long ago before most people

I\'m just excited about the news of progress.
And yes please don\'t say anything about the test. I would hate to have info leaked that everyone got excited about but it ends up being bugged somehow and has to be completly changed for the public release. Plus I would just like to wait and be suprised when it comes out anyway.

Well great work everyone keep it up and good luck to whoever gets in the test :D

We choose to do the beta test program for our own protection :-) It is better if 15 fans first weed out and find the most obvious bugs (but bugs that we devs still missed) before unleashing it on the PS masses and getting thousands of identical bug reports.

I already have CB Madness! - I am going crazy & have a joyous sinking feeling because I know it is very close, but that I have to wait another 2 to 4 Weeks or more...

It\'s like \"Ya, I can Finlay play CB in 2 Weeks\" & then \"I have to wait 2 Weeks to play CB...\"

but actually I do not really mind much because the phone company cut my cable line & now they said that we will not be able to have cable anything until some time in October so now I am on free netzero Dialup... (AArrrrgggg..... ) sorry...

I don\'t mind the whole closed alpha idea...
but I\'m not sure about the consecutive closed alpha idea...

One closed alpha makes sense, it\'s a privilege and a reward to loyal fans, so let them enjoy it.

Why the hell do they need to make another group?
Is it going to go in groups of 15 until all 250k+ accounts have been assimilated into CB? How many groups are they planning on making? It could be a very long time before commoners get to play CB if this is the case.

OT: I have Gmail... no idea what to do with a whole GB of storage though.
Title:
Post by: Xordan on September 26, 2004, 04:06:44 pm
No, the point is that with allowing groups in at a time, they can find the bugs easier. AFAIK, there\'ll be one more group after this one, and then if all goes well then it\'ll be public to everyone.

The accounts aren\'t transfered.  Only gemstones will be, and that\'s an \'if\'.
The next group will be roughly 20 people.  Probably remaining GMs and Mods, and if there\'s room, oldbies and famous forum/irc personalities.

Xordan cleared up my misunderstanding, there will only be two groups if all goes to plan? This is good. Thankyou Xordan.

You misunderstood me Monketh. Sorry. What I meant, was until every account holder had his/her turn at being a closed alpha tester, I am under no illusions that the accounts will be transferred. Thankyou for taking the time to correct me, sorry that you thought you had to, I should be clearer in future.

I\'m VERY glad that the alpha test groups are starting small. You can\'t count the number of times we\'ve crashed the server so far. :) Imagine the chaos if the entire community were trying to play...

You mean imagine the chaos if the entire community (+ the others that just want to check it out) tried to create a character. (Internal joke... Character creation kinda makes the server go *pop* right now, and noone really knows why.) :)

hm... Wasn\'t there a way to ask everyone to post bug reports only in one thread, so the people have chance to read what was before them, and not to post any repeats?

*sigh*... I\'d like to get into the testing phase, but I am just a lowly newb, so that won\'t happen, so this is just another kick in the groin for me... but at least we know CB is closer than ever! :P

Moogie is right, if they just released it to the public straight away, the devs will be overwhelmed with duplicate bug reports, the server would crash every 3 seconds under the pressure of burly dwarves and such on at the same time.... to some it up, the game would go like a spastic colon :p

Let the people with expertise in gameplay and bug finding do their work, the quicker they can the quicker we get on :D

looks like it may take longer then expected...
I wish for a anti-*pop* code but wouldn\'t begin to know were to start.

I know it is fare & all for the selected people to get into CB Alpha, but I just can\'t help feeling it wasn\'t fare, but it\'s only natural... probably would have been in it if I was here 2 or 3 years ago... I\'m going to contribute as much stuff to the game as I can so I\'ll be one of the Select Elite! It\'s just I think this game has a huge potential to become something great, but the community of people is already great in my eyes... :]

My my... aren\'t we the cynic?

I agree about the community Zeraph.
If I had time, and brushed up on programming, I would volunteer my services... but uni keeps me really busy, and I\'m out of practise.
