Remember in Star Wars Epidsode 1 when Qui-Gon went to Watto to buy the hyperdrive parts of the Queens ship he\'s all like,\"I\'ll pay you 20,000 Republic Dyktaries.\" Then Watto was all like,\"Ehh? Republic Credits? Republic Credits are no good out here, I need something more real...\"
I think Planeshift should be like that also. In some parts where there\'s a lot of mercenaries, freelancers, thieves, spies, outcasts...yadda yadda; Yliakum Credits aren\'t \"real\" enough for them, therefore they only accept unofficial currencies that hold more power in that region, which I might add, adds variety to the economy.
For example: I go to a shop somewhere far where Yliakum government has little or no control, then I go to a shop to buy a pair of steel fighting claws. The shopkeeper is selling the claws for 13,000 Forsaith Shylins and I have 15,000 Tria; the shopkeeper would say something like,\"Sorry no can do, government minted money doesn\'t work out here kid.\" Even though I have more money in Tria than Forsaith Pieces, Forsaith pieces are dominant in that region therefore making tria worthless. Then to get money in Forsaith pieces you have to sell your weapons in regions that use Forsaith pieces than get money in Forsaith pieces that way.
Vice Versa: If I go to Hydlaa and they\'re selling claws for 10,000 Tria and I have 11,000 Forsaith Shylins the shopkeeper would say,\"Sorry Kid, only government money works here.\"
I think it\'s a good idea...

Acually I think it is almost already planned:
From main site here: http://www.planeshift.it/setting_economy.html
Unofficial Currencies:
Coins of higher value are not official because these are not made in the official mint. Instead rich merchants who need an easier way to make big trades create them. The merchants use the silver coin, worth 500 Tria, and the platinum coin, worth 1,000 Tria. To make large trades like these using official currency, banks or Craft Guilds will issue credit letters to whoever needs them
However I think this idea is an expansion on this....
maybe some places only take rear metals or something as payment, like a dwarven mining city may only accept ore as payment maybe...
-
Dose this mean money changer could be a job?
dose the exchange rate go up and down?
this might add a cool element to the game.
-
Zeraph hit the bullseye, all this is an expansion of the current stated idea on the Planeshift site.
But it doesn\'t have to necessarily be a large value just whatever is dominant in that region...
-
Nice Idea Kuiper. Well, nice stolen idea, but still nice. These places should be rather remote, such as the very bottom layer of the PS world, or a small village in the middle of the caverns. The only way to obtain this kind of currency is to sell your own things. There shouldn\'t be bankers who can simply change your money into whatever currency you want, that would get rather annoying.
-
Ya this would be nice. Variety in the currencies would be awsome i believe :)
-
Money changer wouldnt have to be a job necessarily. All a person would have to do is say they had 20,000 Forsaith Shylins and someone needed that they could say fine give me 30,000 tria and they are yours. It would create it\'s own trade rate. Bankers wouldn\'t be needed for this because players could do it. The advantage to trading currency with another player to would be that you would probably get better value since normal situations when selling to merchants you don\'t get anywhere near the value of the item you are selling.
Just my 2 cents, errr 3 tria err 2 shylins. Bah nevermind conversion rates have me all confused now :P

I tought gold and crystals were used as cash?
-
nope,
Official currency of is currently: Tria, Hexa, Octa, and Circle.
On the economy page on the main PS site, the unofficial currency are only: Silver Coins and Platinum Coins.
Oh and guilds and banks have credit letters. This probably (which I\'m guessing) is like a check, when a guild is buying something of another guild for like 25,000,000 Tria, then it would be much easier to use a credit letter instead of withdrawing 25,000,000 tria in coins...
-
Those trias, hexas, octas, etc. are all fabricated from crystal though, and might have some intrinsic value. In distant lands, though, I would imagine some other form of currency being used, but it is likely that there would be money changers or traders willing to invest in different currencies.
-
yup that\'s what I\'ve always believed in, the farther away you are from a centralized government the less and less power the value of that government currency has an effect on buying power.
And yes it should have intrinsic value because if the money is fabricated from the crystal then, people would see it more than just money...since you know the crystal sun and all...
-
So were exactly is Yliakum\'s central government?
In Hydlaa perhaps?
-
I didn\'t really mean Yliakum, I just meant any centralized government in general...
-
They had somthing like this in a game called redmoon. There was earth money and \"space\" money. One of them was completly useless though I forgot which one it was. The same might happen here so if the devs add this the should really thing about what different things one could buy that the other couldnt.
-
since i cant get quote to work : Kuiper7986
I didn\'t really mean Yliakum, I just meant any centralized government in general...
.
So basicly what ur saying is that if were in the middle of the wilderness and we find like a shop or a tavern for extreme adventurers we can like only use skins of animals and all the other stuffs that can be used to survive.
-
I didn\'t say one specific area, I\'m talking about the region that it dominates in.
