Title: There must be something we can do to help...
Post by: Tapo on October 15, 2004, 02:11:14 am
When somepeople or someone does something extremely good/nice, it is in my nature to express the greatest of thanks. So maybe, I was wondering, since the PS devs are doing this non-profit and all, and a great job at that for a free game, maybe us players, can help them out. I was wondering if there is any way we can advertise this game around... get more people in on it, perhaps make some donations to the dev team? Maybe this might speed along the creation process... I dunno, I was just wondering. What do u ppl think?

Something that has been discussed a thousand times before. Devs don\'t take donations. And people can help by becoming regular contributors/developers (emphasis on regular... it\'s more of a hinderance to have loads of people do one task and then disappear forever after).

Well I think the Dev\'s do not visit the Fan Art very often, which is a shame considering there is a lot of nice artwork & ideas, also some potential 3D Dev\'s if they get better....

lol, I think I started the \"3D)\" thing... (not sure)

some of the stuff needs UV mapping but other then that it\'s a good start.. :)

I think as CB is released the dev team will be accepting more help.  For now I think they are just trying to get PS to a bit of a foundation from which they can really build off of.  I think a large team at this point would really be more of a hindrance than a help.

This does present an idea though.  Moogie emphasized that the devs were really only interested in those who contributed regularly.  What if someone organized a website that would simply post some things that the devs need done, and as people want to do them they can.  The only real member of the dev team involved with this would be the person organizing it.  I don\'t know, maybe it\'s a dumb idea.  I plan on trying to contribute regularly (if they will let me) anyway so I\'m really not too concerned.

Yes, Zeraph, I too think the devs should check the fan art more often.  Though, for now, I\'m content with them simply making PS to begin with.:P  And yes, you did start the 3D) thing.  When I posted my ptero model you are who I got it from.

ArcaneFalcon...
Isn\'t that what Laanx\'s Wheel of Wishes is for?

It\'s a similar idea, yes, and would probably serve the purpose well.  LWoW at the moment, however, is just a place kind of like this that people can simply post their fan art.  The devs aren\'t going to Orogor (at least lately anyway) with a list of some simple meshes that they need done which are going to be passed on to those who have some spare time.

Zeraph, I\'m sure they\'ll get around to the fan art thread after CB is released to us mere mortals.
I imagine they are extraordinarily busy at present.

OT: Zeraph, check your pms buddy.

Ok, the noobness is flowing... oh yeah... feel the noobness.
anyways...
About spreading the news of planeshift here are some of my ideas.

- We could get onto other mmorpgs that have poor graphics or poor content and start talking about how great planeshift is ( because it is great ^_^).
some mmorpgs we could spread the news on:
         - Rs ( the game that shall not be named, lol)
why?- the game that shall not be named has very poor quality graphics and people will often get very sick of it.
         - text based mmorpgs
why?- because those people dont see any graphics and bringing them to planeshift will be a major change for the good.

another idea-
- Go onto frequently used sites that have forums on them such as certian search engines, and once again talk about how good planeshift is ( because it is ^_^)
why?: because lots of people come to those sites and many people would see the posts about planeshift.

well those are my ideas, and heck what do i know? im just a noob. lol.

-vash the stampede
-random stuff
-\"Mischeif. Mayhem. Soap.\"

Players from RS are hardly the target audience for Planeshift. Beside that it is not very polite to advertise in a game for another game.

Why do you want to spread the word about Planeshift? There are lots and lots of people already here and believe me there will be a looooot more once CB is out. So you better try not to spread the word if you want a server that isnt crowded to the top :D

----

I am really curious how much of a jump we will see in the development process once CB is out, since there are so many people waiting to join the dev team and bring in some great stuff (like Zeraphs Klyros model ;)).

Yeah, and crowded to the top with the typical MMORPG powerlevers, no less... we can do without those, thanks. :P

We don\'t like other people advertising here, so its expected that we don\'t go out and do it to other people. It would make us look desperate anyway, which we arn\'t.

Many popular gaming sites have done reviews of PS and interviews with Talad already.

Gamespot has had Planeshift listed under their Beta Test Center for a long time.  I found PS through that link about 1.5 years ago...

well, beta link is different from an actual prievew/eventual review

PS is still in Tech Demo phases. It\'s not ready for a p/review yet, and probably won\'t be for at least another few years.

I don\'t want PS to be phenomenally huge, I say let people find it themselves, as it is no profit... the devs will not be harmed by low membership... though it\'s already pretty big for a tech demo IMO.
I for one will not advertise anywhere, I may tell some friends, but not many are into gaming.

I don\'t know... There are already many annoying players around planeshift... A preview at such an early version is suicide. Anyway, I\'m confident that PS development will increase a lot after cb release, since there are, as far as I know, many developers aplications that are just waiting for cb release to be revised.
I told some friends, but they are really not interested, at least as long as it remains in MB. I guess it happens with a lot of people.

Perhaps the DEVs should be put their pride or whatever behind them and take donations if they are legitimate. Then pool that money together and use it to further development upon this game...Is it not worth doing? If people want to give you should more then openly receive..

The Devs simply do not want money. This is not their job, it\'s their entertainment, their hobby. Why do you make model airplains? To sell them? No, to admire your own work, to feel a sence of accomplishment, to brag about perhaps. Not to make money. If you wan\'t to further the development by contributing money, send it to Sourceforge. Support our servers, because the devs don\'t want any pay.

Well to damn bad I am transfering 5 million dollars out of my Swiss bank account to turn this game into a multi-million dollar game muahahah >.>...I wish :(

Heh, since the devs won\'t take it, donate it to me. Ill drop out of high school, study nothing but computer programming, buy a huge system, and work \'round the clock on Planeshift. That would be the best way...

Or...I could take that 5 million dollars rent a military plane with a jeep in the back..weapons etc.., come pick you up, fly back over to say...mmm..*ponders* India and drop down on their leader and take over the country and further more take over the world within a world record of 26 minutes ^^

Or what you said hehe, or what I originally planned about donating money to the DEVs like come on treat yourself to some drinks while marveling over your work(entertainment)

The reason devs don\'t already take donations is that they don\'t need donations, and if they had any, they wouldn\'t even know what to do with it (there\'s a quote from Venge saying that somewhere).

**sniffs** When I said that my post got deleted.  Not that I\'m pointing any fingers.

Anyway I think the best thing we non-devs/non-mods/non-worthwhile people can do is t;ry not to kill each other and brush up on our C++ and crystal space while the devs work on CB.  :P  So everyone, PLEASE stop talking about donations, or commercial distros, or, or, ANYTHING of the sort. >.<

If you really  want to donate, you can always give some money to the crystal space engine (it\'s the engine Planeshift uses). Crystal space website (http://crystal.sourceforge.net/tikiwiki/tiki-view_articles.php)
