Title: just got foxfire, and lovin' it
Post by: WiseKran on October 19, 2004, 03:08:34 am
I have heard many arguements and debates about web browsers, and i never really took sides, i didnt need anything more than IExplorer.

but then one fateful day i got... REALLY BAD SPYWARE OF DOOM!!!

so after i re-installed my HD i said enough is enough, and i went to search out good browsers. I have tried a few and find Foxfire to be the most efficient and user friendly. i ran a few pop-up tests, and even tried the original link that i got the viruses and spyware from, it blocked it all!!

so if you still have Internaet explorer i advise you to get Foxfire! the internet is full of garbage, and foxfire is just what you need to keep it out :)

edit) o yea, and if you have windows service packs 1-a or 2, then you dont get java, but foxfire does. Also it seems to load pictures faster, dont ask why :P

firefox is alright. i dont prefer it tho. Opera is just so... slick. from the ability to view windows as tabs, to the status bar telling you how fast your connection is going and how much of the page is downloading. theres just tons more. if your looking for safety, firefox is definally not the safest thing by any standard. its more like the first small pocket of defense against spyware. If you really want protection go get a firewall, most are free and VERY effective.

I use Opera myself.  The latest version looks very nice and I am so used to tab browsing and mouse gestures now.

you can get all that for Firefox too, plus add some nice script extensions that allow you to block virtually ALL adds on virtually all pages.. Extremely nice to be rid of those annoying adds that are everywhere nowadays. Plus there are lots and lots of nifty extensions out there to be found.

I don\'t know if opera has the addblock feature, if not, I\'d never use it.. Grown too accustomed to the no-adds\'ness of Firefox :P

Ya, I\'ve been using alternative browsers ever since IE came out. I currently use FF or it\'s predcessor FB. I love the ability to turn off the whole web-crap that\'s basicly just clogging my connection. The only thing I currently need is an ability to selectively disable this flash-junk, because it\'s being abused for extremely annoying ads (ads that don\'t just move and blink and whatnot, but that also suck big time by playing dumb music!). Currently, I\'ve gotten rid of flash alltogether (by removing the appropriate dll), which isn\'t too bad. I somehow feel it\'s a giant security risk anyway.

I had the same thing happen to my IExplode (which is what I call it now for obvious reasons). Luckily, I already had Mozilla installed and I see no real reason to get a different browser.

Mozilla sometimes eats up my RAM though...

I run Zone Alarm, Norton anti-V, Ad-aware, spyware doctor, spyware S&D,  McAfee,  and Norton system works, along with
Firefox now instead of Internet explorer, I am very pleased with the pop-up blocker and other features, this is just another step to running a very clean and neat machine.

if you cant tell that i am obsessed with having a perfectly clean system by now.... :P

I run Firefox, and have windows firewall, which is all I need to keep my Pc secure. The lack of backround apps also keeps it ultra fast :D

most of my apps are just scans, they dont use recources, except for zone alarm(uses 7,660 k mem) and norton(uses next to nothing)  not to mention i have good processor, think its 2.8 and i have it overclocked quite a bit.

I\'m an Opera user myself. I prefer it because of its usability although it has stupid characteristics when it comes to displaying plain HTML. It all conforms to W3C but differs from the implementation of most other browsers.

I hope for new versions for Opera/Mozilla/Firefox soon though, see http://www.securityfocus.com/archive/1/378632

True. But since Opera 7.5 there\'s an option to use either the standard ads or google ads, and the latter one has a very small size (about 1cm in height on a 1600x1200 resolution on a 21\" Monitor, full screen width) which doesn\'t bother me. :)

The best feature of any alternative browser is the inability to do ActiveX. Oh yeah, I don\'t ever update windoze, who knows what gets sent and modified? No, I prefer a firewall, M$ hasn\'t got a clue about security anway, despite all their pretense. M$ is just pathetic.

same thing with me, i NEVER update windows, and i kept my widnows xp, without the service packs, so that i could still get java, not to mention that the service packs are full of bugs and security flaws.

Thank you for telling me that. Now that I know you never update windows, I can connect to your IP, get a shell, and delete all your programs using one of the many exploits your systems are vunerable to. ;)

Seriously... all you need is one script-kiddie on a field day who pings you and your both screwed..... Firewalls and anti-viruses don\'t do jack all if your system has kernel level vunerabilities...

You don\'t need a windows update to protect your kernals Xordan. Sure, it doesn\'t hurt at all, but it is not totally needed. There are other programs out there to seal down windows.

I am using firefox now. I had never even tried a mozilla browser until I saw this post. Besides a few things that I have to get used to (I was an IE user), firefox is definetly better.

i have zone alarm, with that said, nothing gets in, or out of my comp without my consent.    and WINDOWS UPDATES R EVIL!!!!!

LOL! Zone alarm is good... but not that good. A skilled hacker  can get through any software firewall in about 15 to 30 minutes. It often times helps to double up on software firewalls and to get a linx box (hardware firewall). Sure, even with all that, a skilled hacker can get through in about 2 or 3 hours... but once they see a linx box there, they know there is probably nothing they would find intresting on your PC.

I never said windows updates are evil... because they do secure up your PC.

i use zone alarm, it annoys me though when i go to play a new game online.. pops up and slows everything down for a bit

Last time I updated my windows, it became more unstable than ever. It took me months to get it working properly again, and it still doesnt work as well as it used to. MS office now tries to re-install itself whenever I try to open word, excel, or access; but it doesnt need to, I just hit cancel and the program pops up. I let it re-install once and it fixed nothing. Also, my .net frameworks are nearly shot.

I know more than one person who has lost their entire computer due to windows updates. Maybe it was because they both had dells? My computer I built myself.

i installed a few updates a month or so ago.. my computer would load windows then reboot, once i removed them in safe mode it was all sweet again

i have 2 hardware firewalls, a D-link, and one other for multiple wireless connections, not to mention i have zone alarm, and norton, and mcAfee, which all have firewalls and auto protect mode.

i think it would be way too much to work to try to get through all that when they could just slip inot someone elses comp who doesn\'t have any protection

Exactly. I have a hardware firewall as well, and it\'s security is reasonably tightened. A skilled hacker wouldn\'t be stopped by it, of course, since you can circumvent anything that isn\'t an unplugged cable, but there isn\'t anything for a skilled hacker to be worth the effort anyway. And the script kiddie will not get through (I get several port scans and other break-in attempts per day anyway). AMOF, when there was all this hype about these worms and viruses that kept spreading like wildfires, the only thing I noticed was a big increase in firewall log entries, but of course nothing got through to anywhere. That, and I don\'t open unknown emails, and even less do I open their attachments, and also, anything that didn\'t originate in my lan (or left it unless it\'s a CD) is being scanned for viruses. Furthermore, I\'ve disabled almost anything but plain HTML in my browsers, which makes it very hard for malicious websites to slip anything in. Therefore, I don\'t think I \'ll have to worry about Xordan breaking into my system (and even if you do, you may actually delete everything because there\'s nothing on this machine anyway. In fact, my second harddisk just died and I totally didn\'t mind because I just reinstalled what was on it onto the first one.). :D
