Title: On the Promotion of Planeshift...
Post by: Gormless on October 19, 2004, 09:12:16 pm
Hello!  I\'ve been actively promoting planeshift on three linux forums:  linuxquestions.org, justlinux.com and linuxforums.org.  The response has been really good so far.  In just two days, there have been over 170 hits on the Justlinux.com thread and many people have been expressing their interest in the game.  I really hope Planeshift can expand into a very popular MMORPG for Linux gamers.  :D

!!EDIT!!: The number of hits on the JustLinux forum is now over 300!  wOOt!

Hey, thanks.

I always think that promotion is a double edged sword. First it can bring in new players and developers OR it can bring in people that think it\'s a finished game and complain to no end about things we already know are issues :).

And the latter always outnumbers the former.

Dont worry, I\'ve warned them that it is still a work in progress  ;)

On a sidenote, one person who responded to my thread said something somewhat worrying:

Quote:

habibbijan:
I\'ve been following the development of Planshift for about a year now. About a month ago I even applied as a volunteer music compositon member. I haven\'t heard a peep out of the folks at Planeshift, so they either didn\'t like what I submitted to them, or they\'re a bunch of lazy bungholes. I wonder which it is...

This was my followup:
I really hope it is not the latter. Did you try e-mailing Luca Pancallo? Or perhaps posting on their forums? I\'m sure they probably receive a decent amount of e-mails, so perhaps yours was overlooked or lost. It might be worth your time trying to contact them again (you might have to send a few e-mails out, explain your situation and such) and see if you get a reply. Just dont make rash judgements though. Its never good to assume. (It just makes an *** out of U and Me  )

And then he said this:
When I submitted my application, I e-mailed it to info [at] planeshift.it. On the web site, this is listed as one of his e-mail addresses, so I presume he read it. Maybe it was lost or overlooked, who knows? I was at least hoping for a \"thanks but no thanks\" reply. Instead, I get nothing.

Maybe I will e-mail him again, since I really think I can help with the project. I\'m not just some kid with a Casio; I\'m working on my Master\'s degree in Music Composition. Heck, I\'m probably one of only a handful of people in the world pursuing an advanced degree in music who also has such an intense interest in GNU/Linux.

My question is who exactly is in charge of the recruitment process for new programmers/ developers?  We need all the skill we can get.  Just thought I should inform you about this.

Cheers,

Gormless

The person in charge of recruiting is Mr. Pancallo (aka Talad) but at the moment they are not accepting applications since they are very busy with the release near and all that. According to Talad, every aplication submitted has been filed away and he will look through them after the release. The reason they are not accepting applications is because it would slow them down to familiarize people with the code, and they don\'t have the time.

At the moment, at least one friendly dev is donating a bit of his time to give prospective team members a \"task\" to get them familiar with the code. Possibly more are doing this, but last night I got a task from aarobber...
I am not sure if there is any equivalent for the art team, but the best thing for that person to do would be listen to the music they have and put something together in a similar style and send it to the sound person (Ellarion, I believe) to get their opinion, but unless it really is earth-shaking, I doubt the developers would make an exception to their \"no new team members until CB release\" policy.

Is there a planned CB release date?  I\'m sure that applicants would want to know more about that.  Also, it might be a good idea to put this info on the website so that everyone is aware of how things currently stand.

Cheers,

No, there is no release date for CB unfortunately.  For valid reasons too, if I remember correctly it was supposed to be out for christmas last year at one point (maybe not, it\'s been a while...).  So, yeah.

I wasnt really expecting there to be a formal release date, but the info on how applications are being dealt with currently should go on the website.

Cheers,

Well, I read this \"we\'re not recruiting until CB\" thing somewhere, probably on the wiki, but I can\'t find it now so...
Anyway, I found this tentative combination of quotes...

I wouldn\'t bother until after CB is released. They said they aren\'t looking at the apps for devs until then.

Conclusion?... :P

So this seems to fit in with the testing of CB taking place as we speak, it\'s pace and Altharions estimate. I wouldn\'t count on it being released in time to be a christmas present, though. :)

hehe, yeah, promoting the game it good :) I\'ve got loads of people interested who\'ve got 64-bit pc\'s, seeing as there\'s now a working client (finally :).)

I should clarify that the only reason I\'m waiting untill after Christmas is because that\'s when I\'ll be (hopefully) getting a proper drawing tablet. CB will be here long before then, to quote Talad, \"I want this second phase to be a short one\".

Heh, that won\'t be what he gets. My estimation is 2 months yet. Better be safe than sorry. Anyway, I have mentioned Planeshift to a number of friends, but unfortunately, none has looked into it extensively. I keep urging though.

Ive talked to alot of friends, and on some forums Ive posted. But for some reason I always find hack\'and slash bloks. So no use, or they totally lack the IQ for a RPG. So they just kill everything in sight. Not a good thing :P

But I tried, al you can do right?

*Goes down and sits on his chair again, waiting for CB-release*

I\'ve got a badge to PS on my website which gets about 100 hits a month (at the moment, I might add some PhotoShop tuts which will increase that).  Those who have a personal website etc. and would like a badge you can go to my website and just do a save as on the picture (http://www.falconnet.co.nr orhttp://www.freepgs.com/falcon  - same thing).  It\'s there just below the nav bar.  I\'ve mentioned PS on my school message board, but I don\'t think much attention will come from here as no one can play it.  :/  Maybe some of my fellow animation students will give it some attention...

Just curious...does anyone know if many Windows users have shown interest in Planeshift or not?  (I\'m guessing its probably no...but it never hurts to ask ;)  )

A good number of all new planeshift players are windows users, simply because there are more windows users than linux users in the world at the moment (\"I and my New Earth Order will change that and overthrow the evil empire! Yarr!\" :P)
The development team has packaged it up nicely for them and planeshift has been mentioned on many sites whose main target audience has been windows users. One of the great things about planeshift is and will continue to be (hopefully) its cross-platform compatibility. True, the mac version of MB was never released since there were endian issues that couldn\'t be resolved without everyone changing their client, but dfryer is working diligently on a MAC OS X port and the project, being open source, is (theoretically) portable to any platfor m your heart desires :)

Altharion,
I doubt that anyone will be making any bets with you this time unless they either A: were not here last year or B: know nothing about testing problems.

I\'m on a Windows box (mumbles something) and it works pretty well. Also when there was a thread with people posting pictures of their desktops I seem to remember the bulk of them being WinXP desktops, although I do remember a couple distinct Lnx users and I only remember seeing one Mac screene :(
Pretty much if you can operate a computer with any level of dignity you can play the game. There are those that do nothing but complain about how they want it to be like every other game out there but thats not a computer issue is it now.
