Question: Can you use Gmax for PlaneShift (or any other non-gmax supported game)?
Short answer: No.
Long answer: It\'s possible, but more trouble than it\'s worth. Trust me. Gmax doesn\'t have any exporters to regular file formats because, obviously, it\'s free. Discreet doesn\'t want to be handing out free versions of max 4 (what it\'s based off of) for anyone to use. Companies have to pay discreet to be able to legally make exporters for their file formats. So in essence, discreet is still making money off of it. However, there is a little trick to get around it. First, you need to grab the quake 3 exporter for gmax (I forgot what the file extension is). The quake 3 file format happens to be supported by a few modeling programs (milkshape 3d, NOT free). You can then export to quake 3 format, import into another program, and export into whatever that program supports (in milkshape\'s case, a lot of stuff). This process is messy, annoying, and I\'m not sure if uv coordinates can go with it.

Edit: The same goes for Maya PLE (personal learning edition) except that Maya PLE supports even less than gmax does. Not to mention it covers your renders with Maya watermarks.

darn.. i am looking for a free program used to make mods an stuff for games... espacially PS ... if you know anything about it help would be appreciated..lol
-
you might check out the Wheel of Wishes. They have links to some opensource and free programs that do what you seem to desire doing.
They also have a \'how to 3d\' page that, if you know what they are talking about, will teach you how to make it work in PS.
I can\'t make heads or tails of most of it, so you are on your own after you get there.

Yeah, I would recommend taking a look at blender and wings 3d. You can\'t really use either of those programs to do complex models like characters (unless you have a LOT of patience) but the devs atm need mainly ordinary everyday items. At the very least they will give you a good background in 3d and make you appreciate some of the higher-end programs. At this point I would lean toward wings 3d as I think the skinning process works better, but I may have learned a cracked up way to skin in blender. You had to manually set the position of each face and was really annoying and tedious. If you need a 2d program for making skins (among other things) then I would highly recommend the gimp. Just run a google search for it. It ranks right up there with PhotoShop (is better than psp imho) and is free. If you need a tutorial on making seemless textures I have a tutorial on my site (good for any graphics program, but aimed at PS and gimp), link is in my sig.

Like arcane said, the only free ones I know are Blender and Wings...
WiseKran: check your pms.

i suggest blender over wings.

i have responded to you PM Adeli, thank you
Now,
does anyone have a list of pro\'s and cons for blender and wings 3d? i currently use Blender and have gotten quite profficient, however i have never heard of Wings 3d so i have no argument to contribute
-
I haven\'t used either extensively, so I could be completely wrong on this, but when I used blender the uv mapping was atrocious. You had to manually define the position of each and every poly. There was no unwrap modifier, and no stitching polys together. I know that wings at least has an unwrapper built in. Maybe I just did it the hard way on blender, but I would gladly take the uv mapability on wings over the slightly better modeling tools on blender.

Blender and Wings?
Overall, Blender is better, however Wings is easier to use, but Blender can \"do more stuff\"
I would start with Wings if you have never done anything like this before.

I just got 3ds max 6, and im looking for some tutorials for a fresh noob like me.
the only background i have is with blender, and i have a feeling it wont help :P
-
Honestly, the best max 6 tutorials are the ones that come with it. I think there is an updated version from their website, but that doesn\'t include all of the example files, just the updated tutorial file, and the example files that needed an update.
-
ather that or i bypass the 30 day trial before registering 3ds max 6... if you know anything about either help would be appreciated..lol
If I was you I would delete that part of the post. For what you have said after means you have gotten help presumibly by Adeli if any 3dsmax person saw this thread then I belive (I am not sure) that they could ask to see your PM history. Then they could take legal action.
Also if you are found out you could face a prison sentance (I think its over 15 years for piracy) both of you could (assuming its Adeli that gave him the information.)
-
Watcher: You would, too, have to delete it from your post, so you should of just PMed him in the first place...
-
I\'m sure he meant it as a joke.
I actually pmed him, asking if he wanted to buy my copy.
My brother just moved back in, and we both have a copy, and I want some money so I can get 7 soon.
I don\'t think cracking a program actually comes under the piracy act to be honest... I think it is more along the lines of theft.
I might read the clause and find out, or maybe my girlfriend would know, she is studying law.
-
Cracking a program now puts you in possesion of illegal software. The penalties for possessing illegal software in Australia are:
Fines up to $93,500 (for individuals)
Maximum 5 year sentence for each offence
And be subject to civil suit resulting in awards for damages of an unlimited amount.
In other words becareful what you have 8o
EDIT: Just put fines for Australia since I saw that was where Adeli was from but these fines and sentences are pretty typical for most countries and can actually be worse in some cases. Most of it really depends on what kind of example the court system wants to make of you.

well, the final answer for this thread is.... Gmax will not be of any use to me if i want to be involved in 3d stuff with planeshift.. correct?
thats the reason i started this thread,
o yea, one more thing, what .. um.. file format thingy are planeshift 3d files?
perhaps i can find a way to convert Gmxa files into them, or does 3ds max support this file format?

Meshes to be used in CS (besides characters) need to be in the CS format, for which 3dsmax has an exporter for. There is no such exporter for gmax. If you are making characters then they will need to be in cal3d format, which 3dsmax has an exporter for. Gmax does not. Again, gmax is free, and has pretty much 0 exporters. It is safe to say that gmax is useless. If you need a manual for the 3dsmax exporters you can see the guide at LWoW for the CS exporter, and the cal3d docs (on sourceforge) for their exporter.
