Since Yliakum is underground we can assume that there will be a large variety of minerals and precious stones...so anyways here\'s my list of stones that should be mined so it can be made into jewelry by jewelers.

It?s a beautiful collection, Kuiper.
Certainly the value of the gem should be enhanced by cutting. A bad cut could result in substantially reducing the value of the jewel. So if you are not skilled in gem cutting you might want to wait before taking a jewelers chisel to that 20 caret beauty you found last week.
Also these gems should be able to be set in rings that would offer enhancements to the wearer of the ring. Say for example, diamond for protection, ruby for additional fire magic damage, etc. These enhancements have to be more then just putting jewel to metal. These enhancements should require some sort of investment from the player.
Maybe permanent skill points can be taken from players when these items are created. The players mark will always be on the ring, so if they create enough items they will be famous. This fame will help the player in the long run more then the skill levels will.
This might be a way to help balance the situation of power levelers. Because seriously, not having levels does not mean this sort problem will not exist. Some players will max out on skills relatively quickly. Giving the player another way of spending these skills will go far to keeping some sort of game balance in tact.

I like the idea but personally i think there should be alot of different gems and stuff some fakes to :).
edit: Halleluja! i got my internet back after 5 days... i was about to go mad.

Well, first of all, I\'d like to add that a Jeweller doesn\'t necessarily know about magic, nor does he know about enchantments of items. Which results in that he might not know how to enchant an item, as enchanting item is magic, not jewelling. Or to put it in a more simple and easily understandable way. If all jeweller items are enchanted automatically, they will be useless, cheap and not worth making, thus making the market flooded with cheap, worthless items. Exactly what noone wants in this game.
As for the other thing you wrote, well... Who says there is a \"max skill\"? You shouldn\'t jump to conclusions based on what happens in other games. This isn\'t other games at all, and you\'ll realise that once things start getting uncovered.
And Kuiper... You\'re kinda forgetting that Yliakum has nothing to do with earth, so the things found on earth most likely has no resemblance to things found in Yliakum. Just a reminder. :)
-
ya I realize that Grono. I just thought that it\'d be easier we used gemstones we know about...
But that doesn\'t mean we can\'t make up our own gemstones, those were just some that I thought would be nice to have in Yliakum.
EDIT: LOL or we can merely change the names of the gemstones, yeah good times...
-
i like the idea of enchanting the jewels but dont see why one enchanment should be limited to one stone. people could use a defense spell on many stones, no need to limit it to say just emeralds/made up stone name here
-
We do need a wide variety of gemstones, weather we steal them from Earth, or make new ones. I hate it in runescape, you only have four gems.
-
that\'s how I feel exactly IceFalcon real-world or not there needs to be a lot or at least a hella lot more than four...actually 7 if your a member but still that\'s a bit too little...
-
Lets just have gems do what they do in the real world: modify charisma.
Unless you happen to find enough diamond to make a sword out of it, all jewels do is make things appear more attractive and increase value.
-
well it wouldn\'t hurt if they gave you specific stats or special abilities. Like a ring that can let you see at night.
The real idea of this post is to say that lots of gemstones is good...

Charisma... Well, maybe if the gemstone is like really big and sparkly so everyone notices it, otherwise it doesn\'t really matter if you have a 1 1/2 karat diamond in a ring. It\'s not really easy to notice that. :)
As for the diamond weapons... Well, most likely not. It wont be easy to find a big enough diamond to cut a whole sword out of it, and it wont be possible to cut it properly so it keeps the diamond\'s durability. Then if you start smelting them together, you\'ll mess it up badly because then it wont really look like diamond anymore, and we wouldn\'t want that. But sure, if you want a weapon that you can really show off, then fine with me. :)
-
olig: they do that in the real world because its not really possible to enchant them here now is it
i wonder if you could make an alloy out of diamond and some metal, that might make a good sword, sparkly and shiny standing out witha clear blade? doubtful, but a good sword

I agree a jeweler doesn?t necessarily know about magic - that would make him a magician. :) What I was suggesting was that some jewels have inherent powers that enhance your attributes. You could carry the gem around in your pocket and get the same bonuses. A ring is just a more convenient and maybe pretentious way of displaying your wealth. And yes, no one wants the world flooded with items worthless or otherwise. But you?re assuming that these gems will be common. I imagine that the devs can make jewels very rare if we wish. Not like the crystal factories that exist in the current game, rather say a rate of like one gem per week or month. That way every player has a rare chance of finding a potentially powerful item.
As for the other thing you wrote, well... Who says there is a \"max skill\"? You shouldn\'t jump to conclusions based on what happens in other games. This isn\'t other games at all, and you\'ll realise that once things start getting uncovered.
I do hope there is no max skill, I meant that at some point there will be some sort of diminished returns on skills. You can?t keep making swords twice as good as someone with half your skills, at some point I think it gets silly. But at least we do agree on one thing - that this isn?t like any other game!
I agree with cirdan, lots and lots of gems would be cool. Since this is a crystal world there should be many more types then there are on Earth. Maybe some gems have detrimental effects, while most may have no effects or only effect charisma.
A general description including color, opaqueness, hardness, etc. as well as the effects can be used to define the various types. Include some history and we can create some decent gems for use in game. Please post your suggestions!

I also believe that jewelers should be able to identify gemstone quality and purity if such things exist.
Hey Grono since your occupation is a jeweler, what\'s your take on the jeweler occupation in general?

Style before purpose. :)
Or.. well, let me explain. Jewelry isn\'t supposed to give you uber bonuses, it is supposed to make you look good, and show that you have a lot of money to waste. Magically enchanted jewelry isn\'t for the general population. Those kinds of items are supposed to be -very- rare, and not something you can just go to a market place and shout \"Buying ring of dmg +68 OKTHX\" and you\'ll get it eventually. A magically enchanted ring isn\'t something that is to be traded for money, and only the very best of the mages (like the best of each way) should have the ability to enchant items. Or to make it even more fair, then I believe special jewelry is to be the reward for doing a one-time quest or something like that.
Now, if jewelry is to inheirit some kind of magical ability, it should be limited to a very, very small amount of magic resistance.
-
I agree with Grono on this one, but I also think that a wizard/mage/magic guy thing should be able to enchant a stone for a jeweller...
I would want this to be -etremely- hard to do, with a -very- high risk of losing said gem... and take a -hell- of a long time doing so.
This would greatly curb the amount of cheap magic gems around. This coupled with gems being rare would make it very hard to have a massive selection of gems, jewellry would be for the truely elite!
I don\'t like innate magic gems, it\'s seems weird... and also people wouldn\'t harvest them so much.
-
Um, why couldn\'t the \"Azure Sun\" give other Crystals \"energy\"?
In other games, you could buy \"gold ring\" or whatever but you could always find them for really cheep so that even a newbie can buy 10 rings... since they didn\'t do anything they were not worth much.
I would hate to see that happen in PS, maybe metals have strange properties? I\'d like them to benefit other things then just magic or whatever...
Maybe rings have unknown effects?
So that you cannot tell weather it is uber or not, certain gems add/detract from other attributes, maybe gems have some sort of electrical energy quality that can fuse them if they become to close, who knows how it can be...
-
Personally, Im in favor of modifiers due to jewelry, but I agree, it should be rare. But the modifiers can\'t be so small that its not worth buying/obtaining the object.
-
yeah modifiers should be rare but not so powerful it affects all your stats but not so weak that it doesn\'t effect your stats.
Anyways back to what the main topic is about. I don\'t think it would be bad if Planeshift had real world gems I mean, I really wouldn\'t mind at all having a gold ring with a Tourmaline gemstone.
-
I think we can feel free to borrow some metals and minerals from our world.. Yliakum is not earth but it bears at least a passing resemblance. Not that we have to be *confined* to Earth materials...
-
yes we can \"borrow\" some earth minerals and materials. :) No but really it shouldn\'t hurt I mean I don\'t believe those names are really copyrighted...

:D
Acually what I would like to see is rings with seals to seal letters etc.
-
Gems should have their own enchantment capacity. So they are not limited to one type of spell based on the gem. But each gem should have its own bonuses.
For example
A pearl has an enchantment capacity of 7 which means you could make enchantments like fire damages 7 or physical shield 7 but only one enchantment can be held but if you make a light emitting enchantment on it you would get a +3 bonus or something.
But then there could be gems like diamonds that dont give a bonus to a specific spell but allow 2 enchantments to be made on the item.
But yeah Jewelers shouldnt be able to enchant the jewelery themselves they should have to get a mage to do it for them, just like a Smither needs a Miner to provide the materials.
-
Ya, why not have gems have the capacity to hold enchantments within them from mages, they can only be use X amount of time & certain gems /metals have different capacities etc. then that would make any ring potentially useful or just good to look @.
You need enchanters to cast spells that get encased inside the gems, also the rare \"uber\" rings will be ones with everlasting enchantments cast on them, they should be rare, & maybe only GMs can create such items who knows...
But every gem should have some sort of capacity to hold enchantments, maybe the ring explodes if it can\'t hold the enchantment. to powerful may make it randomly discharge or something....
Maybe some rings make special effects for your Char such as streaking or particle effects maybe even skin color modifiers the potabilities are endless,
Also, You Must Be Able To Ware 10 Rings @ Least! we have 10 Fingers Why Can\'t We Ware More Then One Ring Per Finger?
Maybe you can only equip 2 of the kind of rings that have effects to limit uberness, maybe modifiers are not worth much unless you have lots of them? there are ways of having more then 2 rings on a char!
Btw, gems should be able to be re-enchanted after using...
To elaborate on my sealing idea, you have a metalsmith carve an insignia on your ring (you make a custom graphic black/white) then you can melt wax on a letter & place your ring on the wax to put your own special seal on it, then if you look @ the letter you can say \"yep this is from \" maybe a great RP stuff like a family insignia handed down from generation to generation or guild insignia \"Guild ring\" maybe there can be Crystal smiths that carve seals onto rings...
-
I\'ll take Dfryer\'s side on this one, use some Earth things, and create more.
If Jewellry is special, it should be limited, unless the effects don\'t stack, otherwise you\'d look fancy and be uber, and suck... there should be limits to the amount of rings worn...
-
ehum zeraph, not every race has 10 fingers, i think...
-
That\'s a really good point Cirdan, why did I miss that?
