I think fans are a feasible and should be okay to be used as a melee combat weapon.

Now to what extent should the capabilities and limits the fans should have; I can\'t say.
(+) Pros:
- Lots of varieties of fans can be made
- Feasible weapon
- Fans can have beautiful artwork on them giving the \"artist\" job another thing to do.
(-) Cons:
- People will complain about being a ranged weapon or not and will add that the \"fan can be thrown\" factor.
- Probably won\'t be very popular
-
Perhaps some would be ranged and some not, depending on the skill of the maker.
I like the idea of using art as a weapon. What other weapons would this work well with?
-sheilds
-banner spears
... Thats all I have... need sleep...

Fans were mainly used as \"soft\" weapons, meaning they were back up, or hidden weapons. There were two different types of fans for waponry: Fans with metal ribs, and the other type was a fan with metal ribs and plates insted of fabric and bamboo. They were primarily used for distraction, redirecting blocks, locking, light strikes and preassure points. They definatly weren\'t effective ranged weapons, they were too heavy.
Art on weapons and armor could be used on shields, spear/flag banners, backs of cloth and leather jackets, capes, and samurai banners (http://www.soldiers-russia.com/niena/japan/20-09_green_l.JPG).
The problem with this is that everyone would want their own symbol, so I think it would have to be limited to guilds.
-
Did the orient actually use metal fans as weapons? I don\'t think so, correct me if I\'m wrong, but wouldn\'t these things break into pieces if you hit just about anything with them?
I think these fans would be better as magical instruments that mages of the ways could use for casting, maybe making a cool little dance as they were preparing a spell.
-
They did in China. Around the time of the Sun family\'s rise to power, and subsequent fall.
The era loosely recorded in the Dynasty Warrior games actually.

Fans are not a \"bashing\" weapon oilg, its more of a cutting weapon the sharp edges are conscealed by the material, its in the spines, and if iam not wrong it cuts like a circular saw (not like it but its the same princaples )
Anything that can be swung(usualy hard enough) can be used as weapon. Sure it might not be real effective, but if it hurts, it works.
-
Oh yeah, they\'d be great for cutting, until they hit plate armor. *SMASH* :P
I still think these things would be more suited for magical use. Perhaps enchantments.
-
lol When I read the thread title I thought you meant fans like as in, people who lik PS. :p
-
usually weapons dont shatter opun contact with armour. Steel or any metal is not as brittle as you think.
They were used by concubines if iam not mistaken. kinda like a consealed weapon, what looks like a normal fan might just turn out to be *slice*..... so remember folks keep your eyes above the neck :D
*procedes to hospital*

Check out this site. The iron fan is listed among the ninja weapons. It was used to deflect projectiles...

IMO almost all of these weapons should be in :P
I love the TEKAGI / SHUKO

fans had metal or bamboo in them, that\'s probably where they did most of the damage. But yeah, fans were are very defensive weapons if they\'re used I mean.
-
Weapongrade fans had not only metal in them, they were made from metal. They are unlike the european fans, which consist of spokes and fabrique to connect the spokes. They are more like the paper ones you can buy today. Roughly they are a set of 50 cm long metal plates fastened at one point together.
-
I really think fans wouldn\'t be thrown as much. You have it under your \"Cons\" but really the fan would be one of those weapons to pull out at the last minute and slice someones under arm or back of the legs..possible the throat..depends on my mood really. :) Definately can\'t see it being used as a ranged weapon
A: Two big and flimsy, even though it does have metal you said?
-
Fans are neat, big fans like temari on naruto or small fans like in dynasty warriors :)
-
*while drooling*
mmmmm fans...
*done drooling*
I really like exotic weapons, those that look like normal things and end up being items of death; like swords in canes and the like. I REALY like the fan idea though.
-
i think fans are abit more adventure type of weapon then rpg type.
-
an rpg has adventure...so there...haha ;)
-
Yes, they can be effective for assassins in particular. You can sneak in as the innocent little girl and then kill your prey in the first night. Nice thought.
Also, big, wall mounted fans like in the Alien (3?) movie... electrical ones (or steam-powered) that you can throw your opponents into to mince them. :)
Edit: and I, too, think that fans who are ppl. are weapons. They\'ll distract the prey so you can assassinate them easily... Or they suffocate their prey by sheer mass. :)

-Prays for many ,many ,many fans- Muhhaahahah
-
ah, well.
if nothing helps you can still throw your fan and hope it hits somenone in the eye :D
-
well then if the fan is thrown maybe it can allow a critical hit to the MOB. Just an idea since it was my idea about the fan.
-
wasnt there a chick in the mortal kombat games that used the \"fans\" to kill people , lol This idea seems like a \"Trick\" for the ladys to pull on a man . WAving the fan bring \'em close them bam kill \'em
-
The \"chick\" was none other than Princess Kitana. Her fans were slightly different to what is proposed here.
