Title: I just got 3ds max 6, what is your opinion?
Post by: JellyWerker on November 18, 2004, 07:20:17 am
I was wondering about your opinion on 3ds max 6, I got it at a discount price, but I was wondering if it would be better if I just modeled in blender instead, or if it is more compatible.

I would think that max, being a comercial product would have more features. but as with any program, it takes time to learn. If you already know your way around blender.... I dont know. What are you going to be using it for? modeling PS things, or making your own animations and whatnot? I think Blender would be fine for low poly in game models, but if you want to make uber realistic scenes, I would use max, all the way. Of course, ive only used blender once, and i dont know entirely what its capable of.

In my opinion Max p@wnz blender.  The interface is much more intuitive, the tutorials to do just about anything are right at your fingertips (Help>Tutorials), the tools overall work much more seemlessly than blender\'s do, and learning is much quicker.  When I was first learning I spent about an hour doing a box-modeling tutorial and had it pretty much down.  My first undertaking was my pterosaur (which btw I am still working on animating, it\'s so confusticating :( ) which I think turned out alright (though I did have some background in 3d stuff already).  I think you will be happy with your purchase.  Just don\'t try to learn all the tools on your own.  You may be able to learn some of the obvious ones at a slower-than-necessary pace, but that will only scratch the surface of max\'s power.  Tutorials are where it\'s at.

Blender is far from having the flexibility and power of 3ds IMO.
This is a good choice, but you said you bought it at discount price? How many?
I never found it at less than 4000$ (except student version, but the license is one year only).

3Dsmax suits perfectly real time 3D. Anyway, you can do anything you wants with it.

I got it from an artist friend who no longer used it, for $600 U.S. I really broke the bank, If I end up not using, my parents will be so pissed... ; D. Also djagg, the price for 3ds max 7 is about $3500 at the discreet store.
