Title: Female Kran
Post by: Under the moon on November 22, 2004, 11:28:10 am
I know, I know, I know, there are no female krans.  But, if there was, they could look something like this.
I used Blender and many hours to get this far.  I don\'t know if I will finish the mesh or make a UV skin.

hmm, bump mapping looks shiney. But really good work...

The work itself is good, but as said before there are no female or male Kran (Curios about how they spread!)

Maybe by budding! :P
Anyways, looks to thin and weak to be a kran. Try making it look stronger.

Looks like her behind is... not. That is to say... why does she have a butt in front? o.o

It looks like a statue, one of those that ancient tribes (like Mayas) made of their gods (these were AFAIK rather \"abstract\", just like this one, it has the same feel to it.). I like it, maybe we could have PS have this as an art form / idealised image?

Anyway, she might just be kneeling, which would be possible as we don\'t get to see the lower legs.

Also, I have thought about Kran reproduction, as I don\'t know of any official or inofficial \"theories of operation\" on this subject.

Edit: as promised, I have moved this to GD for a broader audience:

so Kran are some type of planty rock thing that lays seeds.... interesting I think it works well considering what a Kran is :)

Seytra has it right.  I was going for the \'goddess statue\' look.  I didn\'t start out making a kran, but as the model formed it seemed to take on a stone-like quality.  So I thought of the kran and just went with it.

The thing in her forehead is a crystal.  I thought it would give her a more inorganic look.

As for her hips, she was going to be sitting on a stool at a potters wheel.  The legs will come strait out, bend at the knee and then flare out much like the \'male\' kran.

Oh, and as for her looking \"thin and weak\". I wouldn\'t call a two meter tall (or taller) statuesque female kran made of stone \"weak\" to her face.  You might not like the results. ;)

They are made of Silicon which is sand not stone!

Ever heard of sandstone, or better yet, quartz?:P

SANDSTONE,
coarse-grained, sedimentary rock consisting of consolidated masses of sand deposited by moving water or by wind. The chemical constitution of sandstone is the same as that of sand; the rock is thus composed essentially of quartz. The cementing material that binds together the grains of sand is usually composed of silica, calcium carbonate, or iron oxide. The color of the rock is often determined largely by the cementing material, iron oxides causing a red or reddish-brown sandstone, and the other materials producing white, yellowish, or grayish sandstone.

QUARTZ,
most common of all minerals, composed of silicon dioxide, or silica, SiO 2 It is distributed all over the world as a constituent of rocks and in the form of pure deposits. It is an essential constituent of igneous rocks such as granite, rhyolite, and pegmatite.... Sandstone, a sedimentary rock, is composed mainly of quartz.... Quartz is also the primary constituent of sand....
Quartz crystals exhibit a property called the piezoelectric effect, that is, they produce an electric voltage when subjected to pressure along certain directions of the crystal.

Hmmmm.... interesting... electrically charged kran.

From Under the moon\'s sig
Nothing is written in stone. And if it was, even stone is washed away in time.

Fits the thread :)

Yes, they are silicon based, but just as we don\'t consist entirely of carbon, they don\'t consist entirely of silicon. In fact, they would appear as a mixture of silicon, salts and various different minerals when ground and analysed.

The settings page states this:
Quote
From the Kran race description
Kran are as resistant as the rock that they were born from

I\'m not sure wether this refers to their reproduction or to their creation by Talad, but if it is the former, my theory would fit well.
Also, from the same page
Quote

Kran metabolism is very complex, they are used to eat sand of various and precious minerals that are digested in their stomach thanks to strong acids. They can also eat food full of mineral salts like seaweed and some crystals created in their kitchen, similar to chemical laboratories

This suggests that it might indeed be possible for them to live off rock for at least a time of limited physical activity.

Yes, I realize that a mobile creature can\'t be made entirely out of stone, but their skin is made out of stone.  Much like a crab or snail in the carbon based kingdom I assume.  That is what I was referring to.  This does not mean the kran are not all soft and squishy on the inside like the rest of us.:]

I like your theories Seytra... good work.

As promised, I have placed the Kran reproduction discussion to a thread in GD. Thanks to everyone!

Maybe, if you are all OK with that, a mod can move your posts that deal with that subject to the above thread?
