Would you call this abuse??
Mr \'Lightningbolt\' was spaming the chat with questions answered in the forums, FAQ, News Page. He also made insulting remarks about the creators of the game which i took offence to. I decided to speak up and inform him that spaming the chat was bad and he could find all his answers in the forums etc. But Mr \'Lightningbolt\' wouldent lisern. I informed him of how anoying he was getting, he told me to get a shout blocker, but shout is very useful when used correctly.
I now have photo of the nice /tell he sent me
(http://www.geocities.com/simonfilms/abuse.jpg)
personaly, this is not a person i want to play planeshift. I would be very gratefull if a admin could give \'lightningbolt\' a talking to.
What about the rest of you, is this the type of planescape you want?
I would also recomend a complant forum :)
I Have informed Mr \'lightningbolt\' of this post and would happily forgive him after a formal apology
Edit: heh... planeshift.. planescape... cant help it, planescape\'s an old game
-
I hate this stupid global-world-chats.
Not only get they spammed, but ruining the game by taking away a reat deal of roleplay and otherwise needed travel...
-
Dang thats pretty out hand. I\'m sorry this has happened, next time it does inform a moderator.
-
I just can\'t see how /shout can be used in roleplaying at all if the whole world can hear it.
in my opinion it should onley be heard within a reasonable vicinity from the person /shouting
then things like this wouldn\'t be happening. i think
-
Yep, that would be the best way to do it.

Well, I\'m afraid noone can help you if you get abused in some other game. Sorry. :)
Anyway, next time something like that happens, go to IRC or something. There are always mods there who can get into PS in a very short time.
-
Ok really whatever lol hopefully ignore list comes out in the future so you don\'t have to worry about such people but...
Why the hell are you calling this game \"PlaneScape\"? Am I the only one that picked up on that, its not called \"PlaneScape\"...\"PlaneShift\".
-
Isn\'t Nilaya a GM...? I could swear she was, but then why didn\'t she deal with the situation? ?( Maybe not... I can\'t find that GM list anymore.
If I was there I woulda given him a what-for, but MB freezes my system so often that going there is a risk. I do still occasionally turn up (and freeze), but before I do I\'ll handle any idiots that might show up.
Sorry that this happened to you, Zellgadess. I\'ll keep an eye out for him in the future.
But please, for anyone in this situation with abusive players, come to IRC immediately and alert us. I for one am always in the public developer channel (#planeshift on freenode.com) and will come help if nobody else is available.
About a complaint forum: This would just get heavily abused. It is far better to use IRC and alert us immediately to abuse, rather than post on the forum where no GM might look for hours, even days.

Now, there IS a game called planescape, but if I recall it\'s got less in game content than planeshift, and where there is really sucks. I guess scape is what popped into mind when he heard the second half of PS. o.O
Anyway, you *could* download a mod with a /ignore command, such as aineko\'s, if you can\'t get a moderator in there, for a quickfix sorta thing.
-
Did he just threaten to beat someone up on the internet?
He most certainly win in real life. Who let him out of b.net?
-
An ignore command is useful once in a while, but it shouldn\'t be the solution to spamming and abusive players. Turning off a channel is even lees of a valid option. I don\'t mind new players asking questions, but when they\'re obviously trolling, or just jumped in the game without reading anything, it\'s just annoying, and a waste of time for everyone.
As for /shout, MB having such a small area, it being a broadcast channel is allright. But I think that for a bigger release, having more channels would be very useful. Like in Medievia, there\'s a whole area, and a channel, that are mostly used for idle chatting, and shout really is shouting (more range than say, but still limited). In some games I have also seen a newbie channel, which is a good idea if you have a good amount of people dedicated to helping new players.
-
CB\'s Shout range will be area-only. There will be no truely Global chat channel. Newbies can seek help through the use of the Advisor system, and trolls/idiots/abusers can be reported through the GM Petition system. So don\'t worry about a thing. :)
-
So if in need of assistance the best thing to do is go on irc. Its hard to tell who the GM\'s Are (im pritty shure terriah is one) but its even harder to prove such an event. Theres no point prosecuting some one with no evidence, because if people lie\'d about abuse, good people could get punished.
Yea, some good idea\'s, like a newbie channel, a main channel, a merchant channel etc. With choice about what you want on.
ta
and sorry about soiling this great game with such horrid words as planes***e :P
-
Is there a GM list somewhere ? and a modo list ?
@Gronomist : It could be very usefull
-
You it would be very useful for ppl who dont have IRC
-
I do not have IRC, what do I do.
-
If you are under linux please use xchat (or maybe a program called b i t c h x (without space but sorry for this name... it\'s not my idea...) but I dont know how it is)
If you are under Windows download irc... but I dont think you are forced to download it directly... I though you just need to go to an irc page and its automatic...
PS : for b i t c h x see the following link : http://collegelinux.org/photogallery/displayimage.php?album=random&cat=&pos=-1
-
His/her, mostlikely a him uses abusive language yes.
What triggered it?
I hope that ingame this chat is changed so that not everyone has to read trough all the nonsence.
Perhaps that\'s the reason i never visit chat rooms cause it\'s really really empty, nonsence talk about he hugs her, she hugs back and more \'o that! I sincerely hope that the ingame chat box will/cannot be used in such a way!
That would be a great turn off for me in this very promising project which is Plane Shift!
-
You can get Xchat even for Windoze. Download it from:
Edit: They somehow have managed to transform the license to a shareware sort of thing... yuck. Link removed.

That is music to my ears. :) This way, we can deal with abusers and also with abusive reporters. Nice.

I wonder if there will be things like guild chats...
Even though a global chat is a bad thing some times all someone wants to do is have a good chat with many people.. maybe each area can have a dedicated zone where people\'s mind in other similar areas are joined, effectly a planetwide chatroom of sorts that you need to walk into. I guess you can represent it with a telephone booth, though how it\'ll hold 100 people is anyone\'s guess.
As for irc, there used to be a public java chat but I think it\'s dead... so the next option for windows is mIRC, as long as you don\'t click every link in sight there shouldn\'t be too many problems.
Edit1: Errr... forgot to note that people who are inside the are speak like they are in perpetual auto shout, only difference is that people outside can\'t hear what is inside and vice versa.
-
For this, I advocate dedicated chats / channels.
- say channel
- guild channel (though questionable by RP purposes / realism)
- group channel
- OOC channel
Each of these would be separate windows with the ability to completely remove them from the game window. They should also have ignore commands for ignoring the user in the current channel only or in all channels.
This way, there should not be any problems anymore.
/shout would be an area thing but show up in the \"say\" channel, because for questions the OOC channel would be better for it\'s global reach, and therefore /shout would be IC shouts which would therefore belong to the \"say\" channel.
-
Can you eliminate this in a game? No, people are stupid.
I for one will miss global chat, ah well, \'tis for the better.
Ciry\'s/Aineko\'s Mods have the /ignore, AFAIR.
-
No, one can\'t eliminate stupidity. :(
However, the OOC channel would be global, because restricting OOC stuff by IC borders would be pointless IMO.

Only the official Windows build is shareware, there\'s a free one available on this site: http://www.silverex.org/

You could easily have checked that the guild channel, say and group channel already are in CB.
As for an OOC channel. It\'s completely unneeded. If you want to talk to someone about what happened yesterday, you don\'t need a channel for it anyway, you can use /tells, which is something people have yet to understand in MB. And as long as people don\'t know the diffrence between private and public chatting, there is no global chats. So, grab a copy of whatever IRC client you like if you wish to talk about useless stuff with a lot of people, and keep the game free from the massive amounts of worthless spam that comes with such a channel. Even the forums have a place dedicated to offtopic mishmash, so no complaints about not having anywhere to talk about icecream or your collection of nuclear waste bins. :)
And a list of GM\'s.
Current GMs are:
- Aineko
- Axsyrus
- Cad
- Kada
- Gronomist
- Moogie
- Nilaya
- Keldorn
- Bora
- Grakrim
...and, as always, developers and admins have all GM powers, and more.
-
Oh, so I was right. Nilaya wasn\'t taking care of it... O.o
-

It was meant to emphasize that separation of the channels is a good thing and also to show that I don\'t merely wish for an OOC channel.

The thing is that I don\'t like to switch to another program when I\'m in a game. Also, once this switch has been made, it\'s less likely that one will switch back, as one doesn\'t see possible incentives anymore.
However, I know that there would be lots of junk traffic generated by this, but it would also be more easy on chatters in RP channels, because one can easily tell them to use the OOC chat (which can be reached conveniently) than to switch to another program. Also, it would make OOC chatter in the RP channels way less likely, which is what we\'re aiming for, isn\'t it? As you said yourself, /tell isn\'t very intuitive, but a dedicated OOC chat is. However, as I said on another thread when this topic came about, I might actually make an IRC mod for PS, which should get rid of all the traffic issues.
-
Yes, there will be other chat options, the /tell feature is still there, as well as /guild.
As for IRC, you can download a program, or find a java applet on someone\'s site. I know Rebirth, Explorers, Bloodclaw inc., and the Mercenary Guild has them on their site. Its a lot easier if you are just going to use it once.

Well, since I strongly detest all kinds of browserchats and Java(Script), this isn\'t anything I would want to see. I\'ll keep using real, C / C++ or Pascal (Delphi) based standalone IRC programs. :)
Of course, for the one-time user I can see these dodgy browserchats to be an option.
-
Oops, there is a second page to this thread, that was meant for earlier in the discussion. ;(
And yes, the browser chat is useful for one-time instances, for example, to report someone.
-
I hope later versions of planeshift have unlimeted ingnore list (on other games I have found my ignore list full)
-
for general chatting purposes with friends, teamspeak is the best thing IMO
-
Ok, heres something I am confused about. Is there a CAPS limit?
I mean one day I was RPing in the bar with some people.
I think it went like this:
Me: YARRR Ye Wothless HUMAN! GET BACK BEFORE I CUT YUR HEAD OFF!
Person: easy on the caps please.
RPplayer1: Grasps sword, leave this place we don\'t appricate
dwarfs here.
Me: AHAHAHAHAHA YOU THINK I\'M JUST A DWARF?!
Person: easy on the caps please.
Me: I\'l show you a DWARF *Beheads RPplayer1*
Person: easy on the caps please.
Me: God! shut the F*** up. If you don\'t like it just leave we are trying to RP here.
RPplayer1: yeah, shutup.
Person: (OMG.. U ARE OOC AND YOU ARE NOT USING BRACKETS)
Me: ....easy on the caps please?
God this guy became so Irratating.
So we are not aloud to
use caps now?
-
Well let\'s see... you were asked twice, nicely. You could\'ve just not used caps to illustrate your shouting and do it some other way. Instead, it seems, you decided to resort to swearing at the person who was politely asking you to stop using caps.
There are a few things you could\'ve done instead of making yourself look like an arrogant idiot:
Firstly you could have explained OOC that you were using caps to illustrate the fact that your character is shouting.
You could have asked him what else you could use instead of caps. There are several methods, including using the /me command to say \"Nikolia begins shouting\", or putting *Nikolia shouts* at the beginning of a sentence.
You could have sought the advice of a GM, if any were online. Assuming what you wrote below is a direct unedited log of events, you didn\'t even look.
Yes, people don\'t like Constant Capslock Syndrome, and for understandable reasons. It\'s ugly to look at and read, and is \'bigger\'; causing the illusion of spam to the chatbox. You could have found this out simply by asking why the person didn\'t want you to use caps... but his opinion was not saught at all, was it?
There is a mature way to handle any situation. Please keep that in mind before you go off swearing and yelling at people who are just making a polite (and not unreasonable) request.
-
Ok, well firstly off this is not a logg of what happened.
I did say \"I think it went like this: \"
I did ask why he
didn\'t like caps, he explained they are ugly to look at. This is a pathetic reason. I ended up moving away from the guy even though he was in the event/place we wanted to be
to fit in the rp scene also, there where 4 people online.
Me my RP buddy. Xena and that person. I mean how is that something \"ugly to look at\" He was not mooving, he was not RPing he was not doing anything he was just standing there.
It was not \"constant cap syndrome\" I only used the caps
to EXPLAIN WHEN I WAS YELLING! using the /me command or writting *Nikola shouts does not illastrate what word my character is shouting, besides that it is just easyer to use caps I dont see why I should have to stop I was not spamming the game or lagging it up in anyway
If anything the other player was because he was just standing still.. all I was trying to do is have a fun time playing
the game, another thing that you may not of noticed he told
me to stop using caps and THAT was OOC.. he didnt use the
brackets then, and that was annoying me because he was
spoiling the momment. With only 4 people online I dont see any reason for me to stop enjoying myself with a RP
Since my char was a Dwarf and he likes to speak loud.
Maybe have a CAPS FILTER for certan weak players would
Improove the game play for them?
Xenia has no problem with the caps we RP for hours..
Although I see the logic in what you are trying to say,
I dont like to have to stop being in character because one
player does not like the way I RP and enjoys ruining it for me
-
The only problem with caps is that people who use it, don\'t know how to use it. This results in them using caps for hours on end until someone tells them they look like a retarded idiot. YES I KNOW THAT CAPS CAN RESEMBLE SOMEONE WHO IS SHOUTING AND I\'M NOW SHOUTING AT YOU BECAUSE YOU KNOW THAT CAPS ARE SHOUTING. SO LET\'S EVERYONE USE CAPS BECAUSE WE\'RE ALL SHOUTING AND LET\'S GET RID OF THE EXCLAMATION MARK BECAUSE THAT DOES NOT MAKE YOU SHOUT. THIS IS ROLEPLAYING AND I\'M SHOUTING... Guess what. No. You got it all wrong. Caps does not make you shout, caps make you look stupid, because it makes people wonder if you\'re incapable of finding the caps-lock key, or if one of your fingers are too fat for you to move it away from the shift key. If you really wish to shout... Then shout like this!!! People will understand that as a shout. Besides, if your character is someone that shouts all the time, I suggest you reconsider it\'s attitude. Noone likes people that can\'t speak like a normal person. :)
-
I believe caps were used as a way to enhance the speaking of speciffic words, not whole sentance.
So \'!!!\' wouldn\'t do the job.
Maybe caps can be annoying. But I could say the same about smelly and short, yet loud dwarf :P
Would you expect to hear in tavern something like
- Could you pass me some beef, please?
- Why certainly, here you are :)
or
- Out of my way, ELVEN HALF-WIT!
- Half-wit?! Ha! Funny words from someone who\'s height is not even half of mine!
- That be nothing me AXE can not fix!!!
YOU HAVE MY AXE! GIVE ME BACK MY AXE!!! -- Bobo the Dwarf
- Swords
-
I completely agree. Planeshift is a great game. It has great potential. I would Hate to see this game get ruined by such moronic garbage as Mr.\"Lighteningbolt\" over here. I have seen more than a few games go on a little decline because of a few idiots such as Mr.\"Lighteningbolt\", and I would hate to see it here :P
-

And besides what Draklar said, exclamation marks make it look like the person is excited about something...which is not necessarily in a bad way. While caps usually give the impression the person is pissed off.
ex:
I\'ll kill you!!! (this is what a friend would say in a joking sort of way, they are not shouting, but raising their voice)
I\'LL KILL YOU (what the irritable dwarf says after you trip him, followed by a chasing out the bar and a body found in an alley afterward...the dwarf\'s)
Well, it makes sense to me...
-
I can see that his use of caps wasn\'t overdone, and he was roleplaying after all. But you don\'t turn around and swear at someone who\'s being polite and just asking you to quit it.
On the other hand, the guy who was complaining could have moved to another area, or /ignored Nikolia, since he didn\'t want to cooperate. In part, he brought it on himself, but in this case I would\'ve muted Nikolia for his rudeness.
Since Nikolia doesn\'t want to give us a proper log of events, this is just my opinion based on the fragments of the story he\'s given.
-
I feel the need to add my thoughts to this thread. First, I think we can all agree that people who only type with the CAPS key on, are complete retards and should be killed on sight. (Well, that may be a bit harsh. Beaten to within an inch of their life. :) )
I think that strategic use of CAPS (or shift key, as I never use the CAPS key.) Is perfectly acceptable. Exclamation points, may convey that you are yelling, may not gett across your true emotions. Case in point: \"I\'m angry.\", I\'m angry!\", I\'m ANGRY!\" and \"I\'M ANGRY!!!\" all have slightly different meanings. \\
I think Nikolia\'s use of CAPS was fine, except for the swearing. So to sum this short post up, CAPS is a great way to emphesize somthing, when used in moderation. My $0.02
-
\"Besides, if your character is someone that shouts all the time, I suggest you reconsider it\'s attitude. Noone likes people that can\'t speak like a normal person. \"
I\'m sorry, I think every character in PS should be the same,
none should shout we should all just use the same weapons
same race and even join the same guild. Anyone that shouts
should be shot on sight or even bann from the game, This would Improove the game play dramaticly.
You wont like people in real life and you wont like people
in the online world, but just because you can change them
and bann them from shouting or being the way they want,
Dosnt mean that you should.
Basicly all I want to know is are you ALOUD TO SHOUT!!?
BECAUSE I HAVE TO ADMIT I HATE IT WHEN PEOPLE USE THE
CAPS LOCK CONSTANTLY IN CHATROOMS OR IN GAMES, IT
MAKES THEM SEEM VERY IDIOTICLE AND ANNOYING.
but would you rather a RP like this
\"- Could you pass me some beef, please?
- Why certainly, here you are :)\"
or like this
\"- Out of my way, ELVEN HALF-WIT!
- Half-wit?! Ha! Funny words from someone who\'s height is not even half of mine!
- That be nothing me AXE can not fix!!!\"
Either way I think there should be a poll,
To shout or not to shout. That is the question.
-
There is no poll needed for this, just some common sense in knowing how to use it appropriately.
-
In CB, there is a very extensive system for dealing with troublemakers. First, the GM system is much bigger and better than it was in MB. Hopefully GM coverage and ability to react will be better when there are more people playing.
Second, there is unlimited /ignore if you need it.
Third, there is a new /report command which causes the server to log all chatting from a person for a few minutes to a file on the server, so the devs (or GMs) can look at them later if no one is online to control the situation at the time.
Fourth, /shout isn\'t broadcast anymore, so hopefully some of this will be easier to ignore.
Fifth, there is probably more but I can\'t think of them right now. :-)
- Vengeance
-
Moogie, a lot of people dont have common sense. For instance, forum noobs, small children, 85% of the B.net populace...
-
Shadow: Great! The system will work perfectly then. :D
-
All these people who pay out on Battle.Net.
Do you go there? Often? And not just to a market channel?
The people there are just like the people here.
I made many friends playing Diablo 2, I don\'t care one whit about your opinions of that game, you seem to have too many arrogant opinions about everything anyway, so one less will be a good thing for you.
There are good people, there are bad people! It\'s just like anywhere. You don\'t like the game, fine! Don\'t arrogantly insult the populace of said game though. They are people too. Same can be said of people playing Counter Strike, I made many friends there too.
I pity everyone who holds these attitudes, at least people like me actually play other games, not just insult everyone who doesn\'t play their given genre.
That would be like me saying I hate everyone who doesn\'t play DDR, because they play games without using their feet. Very logical.
Lay off the hack and slashers, the shooters, and everyone who isn\'t you.
Shadow, small children have more common sense than a goodly proportion of this forum\'s denizens. 85% is a slight exaggeration there...
I could easily say something similar about here. People ask stupid questions again and again and again, they complain about stupid things, and expect the impossible, this is a sterling display of common sense isn\'t it?
Edit: none of this, until I mentioned Shadow was directed at any particular person, just the majority of the forums.
-
I find this annoying to see people swearing and abusing other players. If I were a moderator I would ban people who get caught doing this. I think they should put some supervisor in the planeshift that can ban a person caught swearing and abusing and doing anything bad to other people.
Now I have put my two cents in but what the heeeek its worth it
Thanks, Verideon.
-
type /guild :P
@Zell: Dude when I complained to you all you said was forget and forgive or something... :P Shouldnt you do the same?
Oh well see my friend, people do become a nuisance and need to be banned... talking to them wont stop them.
I will be going to IRC immediately next time :D
