From what I hear, nVidia is this really good new graphics driver (what exactly is a driver?). I think. Will it help run games like PS? and it\'s free to download, right? ANd is there a big difference from the version in this link and a beta version?

Drivers are what your hardware uses to interact with your system and ensure compatability with anything that requires the hardware\'s use.
You should always have the most up-to-date drivers for your hardware. Funny you should be talking about the new NVidia drivers, as I just this second finished installing them for myself. :D
BTW- if you don\'t have an NVidia graphics card, do not get NVidia\'s drivers! Common sense, I know, but...

crap, i downloaded them last night, 1am, was tired. thanks for the save moogie

whoo... I have an Nvidia Card!! i downloaded the drivers yesterday after a nice reformat :)
-
I would download the new drivers but it would break Sim City 4 (damn geforce 4mx).

Just a question.. why are nVidea drivers bad? ?(
Is it just that they suk or are there alot better ones that totally outclass nvidea?

I\'ve been doing some driver switching hoping to find a version that would make my card more stable. I was hoping this official 67.03 release would help, but it looks like the leaked versions (67.20 and 67.42) are doing a better job.

whats so bad about nvidia drivers? i have 66.93... and running no problems...I can play any game I got and it works just fine.. its ATI\'s official drivers that suck, get third party drivers for them :)

Well, it\'s likely that you and I have different GPU\'s. Therefore the driver can work fine for you, and be very unstable for me. Games like Farcry, UT2k4, and Morrowind crash randomly for me. The fact that my card shares an IRQ # with on-board usb ports doesn\'t help either. I\'ll probably end up disabling them in my bios...

i got an Asylum Geforce 4Ti 4200 128MB .... probably is different... and my AGP has no conflicts... UT2k4 and Morrowind work fine, thank god, i dont know what i\'d do without them :) only problem I have is B&W TV output, but the source to that maybe the fact that it goes: S-Video->AV->Radio Waves->coax into my TV... wish I had a VERY long S-Video cord :p

:| Am I reading these posts correctly? Do people really download drivers because they think \'Nvidia ones work better than ATI ones\' or something (for example)? That\'s... really scary, you know...
Unless I\'ve been in the dark all this time... I was under the impression that you should only use drivers made for the use of a specific graphics card type/family/whatever. So NVidia drivers only work with GeForce cards, ATI drivers only work with Radeons, etc.
I thought it was as common knowledge as \"you can only play this game after you install it\"...
Am I confused? ?(

C\'mon, moogie, nobody could be THAT stupid... Could they?
-
I have been asked by someone to repair their computer because the \"coffee holder\" was broken. Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers. Of course, that is stupidity, which can\'t be cured.
The driver thing may be ignorance, which is easily cured. Like so:
Drivers are programs that allow your hardware to interact with your software. You should always use a driver written for your particular make of hardware. If you have a GeForce, use a driver written for GeForce. There are often more than one driver written for a specific card, you should go with the most up to date one(usually) for best performance/stability.
As for the moron with the coffee stains in his cd burner.... I hope you die a painful coffee-electrical death!

Who the hall puts coffe holders on thier computer!!! Thats totally abserd lol! What company made thier comp lol... starbucks?

nVidia are definatly the best company where drivers are concerned. Unfortunatly I?m stuck with ATI and their pieces of malformed code (ok,not that bad ;) ) but I?ll prob get a nVidia next unless ATI improve their support for linux soon.

i am thinking the opposite... I was probably gonna get a 9600 Pro next... just use third party drivers made by the company who made the card... or as most people suggest...
but nvidia does rock with their drivers... they work perfectly with no problems.

does anybody know if PS will work with 3Dfx cards? I have an old 12 meg voodoo 2 monster card lying around, that was previously only good for playing Quake 2 and half life, 1027*768, 45 FPS on a pentium 133 with 32 megs of ram. That card rocked... I bet it could handle PS.
-
Ehh... 12mb?! You\'re crazy to even ask. :P

any driver, for any card has glitches (OK, my old VGA-Graphicscard without own RAM, hadn\'t had any glitches because there were nothing to glitch with :) ), for example my GForce 2 had pretty much trouble with \"Fellowship of the ring\" a game that just needs a 8 MB card, The landscape vanquished (yes it was away) and Frodo walk merely in the air. Or in Dungeonsiege the object markers were also displayed. i found it weird seeing one of those annoying little things runnin\' around in a red Bubble or seeing a blue line connecting target and bow of my char.

CD-Rom player you know.. never heard that? Some people actually confuses that with a cup holder..
About the drivers then, using ATI drivers wouldn\'t really work AFAIK since the driver wouldn\'t find the card, and the installation shouldn\'t be able to continue..
Anyway, it\'s like trying to push a square formed piece of woord, in a round hole. It\'s doomed to fail

I\'m not too sure aboutt this now but don\'t nvidia have the best Graphics card
In the world now that they have the new SLIs out?
An SLI is basicly 2 of the best Nvidia graphics cards stuck
together in one piece though you need a new mother board
and all this stuff.. although ATI beat Nvidia in the graphics
card test because they overclocked there system waaaay to
much and cooled it with dry ice

Personally I feel that nVidia chipsets are superior to Radeon. Especially the FX series, but that is just my choice.
To highlight stupidity...
My girlfriend worked in a call centre for a telecommunications company here called Primus.
She had a person ring up saying that they couldn\'t access the internet, and their computer wasn\'t doing anything. She asked all sorts of logical questions about the computer, then decided to ask if the cords were connected.
\"I don\'t know\" replied the halfwit.
\"Why don\'t you know?\"
\"I can\'t see\"
\"Why can\'t you see?\"
\"The power is off in the building\"
That\'s a true story, never doubt studipity.
Oh there\'s also \"Do I need to have a computer to have the internet?\"
As Einstein said, \"There are only two constants, the universe and human stupidty, and I\'m not sure about the first.\"
-
FX cards are good, sparing anything lower than 5700... the lowers are worth the cost and slower than a comparable ATI card... but overall ATi has Nvidia beat in performance, Nvidia may have a bit of speed on ATI, but Nvidia\'s top cards beat ATI\'s top cards... its the same debate as to which is better: Intel or AMD... personal preference comes to play a lot...
-
and drivers ... -by a one-day-old happy owner of a FX5700TD
-
The FX series is a worthy replacement to the poor excuse MX\'s which pretend to be GeForce 4\'s when they\'re really only GeForce 2\'s. The FX are what GeForce 4 should have been in the first place. I\'m happy with my FX5200 256mb, cheap but powerful. :)
-
only problem with FX5200... my Geforce 4 Ti4200 is faster, even though i only for 128 of memory to your 256, i have an overall better performance from my card... thats the thing with nvidia, they dont make Ti\'s anymore, but many of the lower FX cards arent as good as the Ti\'s
and yes, MX cards suck, there was no excuse for how bad they were...
-
Simple solution to that, buy a higher FX...
they are not all that much more expensive if you shop around.
My brother got a WinFast A310TD which is a 256 GeForce FX 5600, brand new for as much as some stores sell a GeForce 4 MX. It\'s a Leadtek.
Moogie, it was common knowledge that an MX was a stripped down card, and was intended to be worse than a Ti. I think our old card was a GeForce 3 Ti 500, after I talked my brother into avoiding the newer 4 MX.
I myself want the much newer GeForce 6800 Ultra (http://www.techreport.com/reviews/2004q2/geforce-6800ultra/index.x?pg=1) . The First of nVidia\'s new NV40 series.

ShadowFalcon, if you EVER try to run PS on a pentium, with 12MB of video memory, with 32 megs of ram... It will, in order of likelihood:
1) Crash your computer (most likely)
2) Take longer than two hours to load
3) Appear to take longer than two hours to load, but really just freeze
4) Overflow your harddrive by dumping hundreds of megabytes of swap onto it
5) Win the world record for lowest FPS (I\'m guessing about .001 FPS... You\'ll think that the game world is a splash screen--lol :D)
Seriously, I have a 2.7GHz, 1GB ram, 128MB geforceFx 5200 Ultra (<--Sucks--I\'m buying a different one) and I usually get ~60 FPS on planeshift.
Actually, this computer will even run Halo, which is a miracle.
-
How is that a miracle?
-Zorium
-
the 800 duron i spoke of ran halo, top settings pretty as anything... it runs PS pretty as it can get... sans the engine lag...
so i have to say your miracle that your machine runs halo... obviously states that my crap 800Mhz is a whole lot better than your 2.7Ghz :P
-
Actually, it\'s the graphics card running halo that\'s (semi)miraculous. The processor speed starts not to matter around 1GHz...
-
the graphics card should run it just fine... the FX5200 is newer than my ti4200, even if it slower...
you have to think...
a 800Mhz Duron, 256 133Mhz SDRAM, ECS K7SEM+ MB, with a ti4200... your processor/memory blows right by that... and it was a reliable machine... it could play almost anygame... we hit some lag i the new 2004 released games... but overall for a 4-6 year old computer it did pretty well...
i see no problem with your computer running halo... it wasnt that much of a performance game...
-
..so many rediculous statements here....geez and thought my elsavadorian friend was technologically impaired...
