Title: OS X Client Crashes on Startup
Post by: Oranus on December 05, 2004, 03:46:02 am
PlaneShift Version: 0.3.002
OS: 10.3.6, 512MB RAM
Computer: G4 800MHZ
Video Card: nvidia geforce4 MX 32MB
Character Name: None, as not able to open client

Details:
When double-clicking \'pssetup.app\' or \'psclient.app\' from the hardrive (with all files on disk image in same folder on HD) or from the disk image itself, both fail to load.

\'pssetup.app\' bounces on the dock and disappears. No \'Send Report to Apple\' dialogue box appears. For \'psclient.app\', the application appears to load successfully on the dock, and a window titled something like \'Planeshift Crystal Blue (vs)\' loads, and then the app crashes, icon disappears from dock, and a \'Sent Report to Apple\' dialogue box appears.

Note: It is hard to tell the name on the window that opens for \'psclient.app\', as it loads for only a very short moment.

Hi,
thanks for being the first to give us feedback on the Mac distro.

Right now the only app you should run is psclient, that was tested by Daniel (our Mac developer).

Checking the log you pasted, seems that the application cannot load :
/sw/lib/libvorbisfile.3.dylib
This is a library we use to play sounds. Maybe what we provided in the install is not enough to run it.

I suggest searching the net to install ogg vorbis support on your machine. We will provide more info to you as soon as Daniel is available.

Let\'s wait few hours, and see if other Mac testers have the same issue.

this works for me :

1. install fink distribution from http://fink.sourceforge.net/

2. run the included \"FinkCommander\"

3. select package \"libvorbis0-shlibs\" to install

after that the client works...

Yes, so it would seem that Ogg Vorbis is needed. The problem is, I really dislike Fink. Is there any other Ogg Vorbis plugin or such that would work? I found one for iTunes/Quicktime, maybe that\'ll do the trick?

Okay, so I installed Fink. It gave me an error with the pathsetup, even though the pathsetup.app says it\'s fine. So I manually edited .profile, and sure enough, it isn\'t there. So now it is, but FinkCommander still isn\'t working, even after I quit out and re-started the App.

Here\'s the error on FinkCommander:

dpkg (subprocess): failed to exec dpkg-split to see if it\'s part of a multiparter: No such file or directory
dpkg: error processing /sw/var/cache/apt/archives/libvorbis0-shlibs_1.0.1-1_darwin-powerpc.deb (--unpack):
subprocess dpkg-split returned error exit status 2
Errors were encountered while processing:
 /sw/var/cache/apt/archives/libvorbis0-shlibs_1.0.1-1_darwin-powerpc.deb
E: Sub-process /sw/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

Anyhow, that was a bust. Any way you can send me the libvorbis.3.dylib file?

Thanks,

Gabe

Okay, the solution is to download the fink source and do a bootstrap compile, which takes a few hours.

Then using finkcommander, you can install libvorbis-shlib.

A warning to game designers, normal users will NOT want to/trust themselves to/be able to do this. There needs to be an install of the lib on installation of the game.

Can you provide the compiled lib, so we can post it here and other can just download it? Will that work on different systems?

Indeed, I got the same bug:

dyld: /Applications/Planeshift/psclient.app/Contents/MacOS/psclient can\'t open library: /sw/lib/libvorbisfile.3.dylib  (No such file or directory, errno = 2)

I\'m proceeding to try the Fink route.

Hrmm...is the compiled lib just one file? I know that it needs this file: libvorbisfile.3.dylib

But is that the entire library?

Title: Fink and Vorbis
Post by: Vaiyul on December 05, 2004, 10:02:28 pm
First of all, greetings to all mac testers,

I had the same problem when I first launched the psclient.app from the freshly installed Planeshift3D folder.( can\'t find /sw/lib/libvorbisfile.3.dylib in the apple crash log)

So I read this forum and installed Fink 0.7.1 and ran FinkCommander, I entered vorbis in the text field  and clicked on libvorbis0-shlibs and then clicked on install binary package, the install went on fine. I later started the psclient.app witch loaded fine . (nice loading picture now on the login game screen)

Planeshift version: PlaneShift_CBV0.3.002_macosx
OS: 10.3.6
Computer: 1.33Mhz iBook G4
Ram : 256 Mb
Video Card: ATI Radeon 9200, 32MoVRAM

I have to thank you all ! In particular Vaiyul...
Now with FINK it works.

Anyway how to get the \'pssetup.app\' to not crash immediatly ??

Do I need it to set up graphic things or not ?

Thanx and good testing

i\'ve tried to get fink to work, and i\'ve had exactly zero success, can we just download the missing file from somewhere?
Title:
Post by: dfryer on December 06, 2004, 08:38:59 pm
Sorry about this, I obviously missed moving this one inside the distribution.

PSSetup will most likely not run, although you could try copying the contents of psclient.app/Contents/Resources to pssetup.app/Contents/Resources

I will provide the necessary file, tweaked so that it can be installed within the application bundle.

Apologies for the chaos!  I\'m only sporadically available...

Thanks,
Daniel

Please anyone, what is fink? I have this very problem, but do not want to download anything to my computer that i am not familiar with. I would like to know exactly what it does, what it is, who distributes it, and if it is a safe download.
(thanks much)
cheers!

Fink is a project put together to bring a lot of open-source software to Mac OS X / Darwin.  It allows you to select the software you want, then automatically downloads, compiles, and installs it.  It is probably not the most user friendly software in the world, and should soon not be necessary to run the PS Client.  It is, however, how I get the libraries that end up bundled inside Planeshift.

Near the start of the thread theres some brief info on how to get the lib file.
Heres some more detailed instructions if you\'re having issues or don\'t quite get it:

Heres the Fink Download Page.
http://fink.sourceforge.net/download/index.php?phpLang=en

Click the link Fink for your version of OSX.
Click a link for a download source, usually the location closest to you.
You may have to click the download link manually to start the download.
Mount Disk Image.
Run Installer package.

Copy FinkCommander folder to your Hard Drive if you wish.
Go into the FinkCommander Folder.
Run FinkCommander.
In the search box (upper right) type in:  libvorbis0-shlibs
Hit Enter/Return Key

You should see an entry appear in the list box below
Select the entry by clicking it.
Click the icon on the left (with the blue Plus)
It\'ll probably ask for your password.
Probably twice.
It may also ask for a response, which you can select the default option. (just select next, I think)
If all go well, thats it.

this is the error message i get when running fink commander:

Errors were encountered while processing:
 /sw/var/cache/apt/archives/libogg-shlibs_1.1-1_darwin-powerpc.deb
 /sw/var/cache/apt/archives/libvorbis0-shlibs_1.0.1-1_darwin-powerpc.deb
E: Sub-process /sw/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

How can i fix this?

Try this:

Go into your Applications Folder on your Hard Drive
Then go into Utilities
Run Terminal

At the prompt run this command:

sudo apt-get install libvorbis0-shlibs

type your password and see if that works.

Title: what version?
Post by: Sir Peter on December 08, 2004, 02:46:58 pm
Are you using Fing 0.7.1 on OSX 10.3.6 ??

Very strange... it worked fine for me, don\'t know sorry.

Post by: evilweezul666 on December 08, 2004, 06:11:14 pm
Here\'s my specific problem:

- PlaneShift Version you are using: PlaneShift_CBV0.3.002
- OS mac OSX (10.3.6)
- Computer type: ibook G3; 800 mhz; 128 MB
- Video Card model N/A
- Character Name: Have not made one yet... kicked off before i can create
- Details on the problem:

well as i stated above, Planeshift kicks me off before i can create a character. After i log into my account (e-mail address and password) and choose my server, i come to the screen where it says create new character at the top-left hand region of the screen. A few seconds after i get there, my mouse (in game) wont move and a few seconds later it kicks me off and the submit bug report to Apple screen pops up.

#1. Please don\'t resurrect a 3-month old thread.
#2. Use this: A Guide to Running Planeshift on Mac OS X (http://www.planeshift3d.com/wbboard/thread.php?threadid=14416&boardid=33&styleid=3&sid=66bae48da52f8f1803082a8594dc9a57&page=1#1)
#3. It won\'t work now, cause the latest version has not been compiled for OS X yet.

Can we please get the guide stickied? Either here and/or on the CB Bugs forum?
