Title: No more US all volunteer military?
Post by: Kuiper7986 on December 11, 2004, 11:36:27 pm
The US as you know has an all voluntary military. But when a male turns 18 and is a US citizen he must do selective service (which is give all your info to the military). This will be used incase of a national crisis or wartime. Of course right now they say they don\'t need it but because of the ongoing conflict, they might one day call people to go.

I have asthma, maybe I\'ll be exempt BUT if I\'m not all I ask is...

If get am put as an infantryman, that I get free inhaler medication (lots of it), a working flak jacket, a rifle that works, plenty of ammunition...

If I get put as indirect fire I\'d wanna be part of a mortar squad...

If I\'m on a naval vessel, I\'d wanna be on an aircraft carrier or an Aegis Cruiser...

If I\'m in the air I\'d wanna be part of a B52 crew...

This is all considering they let me go where I want, which they probably won\'t...

Any other countries have a mandatory draft or something like the selective service system like here in the US?

The Selective Service isn\'t a mandatroy draft, its in place so that once you hit 18, the government has your information incase a draft ever comes back... it is not a draft... and its not likely that the US will have any draft anytime soon.

I actually read an interesting article on why there probably won\'t be a draft in the US anytime soon...

Basically, if there was a draft, and it was done selectively to the men, then someone would complain that it was being \"selective\" and that women should be included too.

And if it was done to everyone, then women would be included.

Of course, not too many people would likely be happy about having their daughters/wives, etc. drafted into the military...

I am Canadian!
Go Canada!
Uhh... This is getting off-topic now. Umm, I don\'t think they\'d let you into an aircraft without proper training...

on a side note: no one has to do selective service... you just lose their benefits, whatever they are...

Well here in Singapore we got a manadatory national service where every male aged 18 gets sent to the military for 2 and a 1/2 years to learn how much you can drink before you get drunk, handle a rifle, unarmed combat, trade \"tips and postions\" and other fun and not-so-fun military stuff.
Sure it sounds unfair but you get paid in the army and after the 1st 3 months or so life gets easy, unless you get posted to the special forces + you get more pay in goverment jobs after you finnish, and getting buff ain\'t a bad thing.

One of those would be financial aid, which if you didn\'t need any, then you would be able to buy your way out of the army anyway.

And if you do sign, you only have to fight for 5 min before surrendering! :D

In my country military service is still mandatory. 6 months to loose in your life. I really hope the politicians will change that but till then....

if I ever go into active military service I\'d like to sit on a chair and take care of a pretty red button with warning signs all over it.

But if I get drafted either the aliens invaded Earth or  the only ones living after a year would be the ones who pushed the button. :)

I\'m planning on going into the navy, they have some awesome benefits (or so they say <.<    >.>), including a promise to pay off all my student loans. :D I\'ll need to get that one in writing.

Bush would not want a draft, it would hurt his reputation too much. Plus, a draft would never make it through congress unless this war heated up into world war III. Don\'t worry about it.

but raven, presidents can be impeached. He\'s not that stupid. And as I said before, congress would never let it pass. The president needs to make a bill for the draft first, and then it goes to either the senate or the house (both?), where it gets reviewed. If it does get past congress, (unlikely since half of them are up for re-election in 2 years), then the judicial branch will have to review it if they want to, I think. Bills take a long time before they take action from our branches.

a bill is drafted -> then it goes to the house for aproval, upon an aproval the senate takes the bill and they aprove it, then after all that if its aproved the president has to aprove it, judicial branch isnt involved.

so there you have it... and yes many years may pass before it reaches the president...

ahh... the wonders of my American Gov\'t class...

heard this joke...

\"i enlisted so i could avoid the draft.\"

i could be totally wrong. but i think that when there\'s a draft you get little choice about the proficency that they stick you with. but when you sign up you get more choice. if you want to get the job you want when you are in the army the best way to get it is to volunteer.

*shrugs*

i could be wrong. are there any armed forces hr types out there that could say yes/no/cancel?

Mmm although I really dislike the military I always had the urge to join up, and in the future I am still considering.
