Title: Bored Again: Future of gaming
Post by: Kuiper7986 on December 14, 2004, 06:49:14 pm
I was watching Judgement Day on TechTV and Tommy Tallarico was right in saying that all games are now becoming more character and \"choose your own path,\" oriented. Anyone find this to be true?

I do, MMOs of all sorts are popping up like crazy and more single player games are become more player driven rather than story driven.

Sadly, yes that is true.
I wish I could play again a game made only for the story, like Planescape Torment, Septerra Core, Vampire the Masquerade - Redemption ...

I did notice that, especially with the GTA series. Remember when it was a fun, top down, shoot stuff steal cars drive fast game? Now, GTA:SA requires working out, eating, getting haircuts, basicly leveling up. GTA has become an RPG. Im scared now...

.. \\o/ .. Depth. You want to tell me you never played a game only for the story? You never lost hours, days, even weeks, only to see how the story ends? Don\'t think this is true. :)

final fantasy was always ruined... their prime was until like 7.. then graphics took over... and the story fell to the backside...

Those are the only kind I like...if I want a story I\'ll read a book, which is considerably cheaper then $50.

I need no preety pictures. :baby:

Well ofcourse I have played those games, I pretty much played every RPG that Playstation(And the old FF\'s off SNES) has come out with old and new but to say the least if it suddenly disappeared and I was just left to action games or Pong then all the better!

The reason is simple..when more RPG based games starting coming out like Final Fantasy 7 is a great example..DND groups began to split up, so I figure if RPG type games disappear then the DND will rise up again for those who enjoyed it.

It seems like all games these days are more focused on \"richly enhanced graphics\" rather than the story. I will not buy a game for its graphics. The graphics should just be a bonus, not the roots of the game. I believe the story, setting and gameplay make the game. It\'s like soft drinks for example: You buy a certain drink because you can, umm... win a trip to Hawaai, for example. The drink tastes like -censored-, but you buy it for the chances of winning the trip.

In other words, people got stupid... >:(

I stand firm in my conviction the FFX is the greatest game known to mankind, because its story line is the best i have ever heard. better than any movie/book/game i have ever see/read/played. not only that but the gameplay is intuitively interactive and addicting

the added bonus is that it has Incredibly richly detailed realistic graphics. and incredible high definition cutscenes with awestriking sound quality   .. is awestriking a word?! hmm... o well

Praise be to Yevon[/i]

Actually 7 was the best and the graphics blew donkey butt or something close to that :P The storyline for FFX was to damn short

games no longer need a story... just great graphics and the Final Fantasy title... and all th e lil RPG kids will buy it... I must SNES\' FF\'s where the best... i dont care what you say... but i think FF is overrated... I prefer a little more open... DnD style game... I loved BG and think that no game shall ever come as close to the trilogy, I guess, the gameplay was awesome as well as a pretty good story... NWN.. DnD style, also a very good game with the option of mods and the such...only truly open game I like is Morrowind.. but then again what game has ever made such a vast, realistic land as they did? even if it has flaws...

Ofcourse you think FF\'s overrated, everytime a conversation like this pops up someone always mentions it being overrated and no the only ones that might be are 10-2 and 11 the rest are good story lines and well put together XD

I am sorry, I love VII and X, but the greatest Final Fantasy of all time, is VI.
It has the most indepth story of the entire series, if it was in 3d, it\'d get more credit I\'m sure. I love that game.
Above that, I find the characters to be highly interesting. None of them had really annoying aspects to them, unlike later games.
Wakka, need I say more... Cait Sith? That weird frog-eating thing from IX... I even forget its stupid name, I remember... Quina Quen... what the hell?
Give me Terra, Locke, Shadow, Cyan and the others any time.

Oh, and to get back on topic, I find action games in dire need of a choose your own adventure style, but RPGs should be strongly, very strongly, story-oriented.
Two of my favourite RPGs are Suikoden, and Suikoden 2, I love them.
Games like Fallout and Knights of the Old Republic are acceptable, you choose your path, but follow the same storyline.
I loved the ability in Jedi Academy to really choose Light or Dark, not like the way it was in Jedi Knight.

To cap it off, RPGs, need freedom of choice, but also need a storyline. The freedom should be in how you react to the story.

I.Storyline
  1.Good path
  2.Bad Path

that and a good story and great characters and you may have yourself a great game...

I\'m actually really dissapointed to see all of these FF bashers. Thats all i grew up with i never really got a chance with MMORPGS with the lousy comp my dad had and my lovly dial up so i stuck with the console games and after beating VII for the first time i couldnt get off of the FF series. I mean look at VIII i actually really liked the game but i know that it doesnt hold a candle what is considered a \"true RPG\" and IX.....well IX= crappy story line and halfbaked developers slapping what was before a very credible name onto probably the worst piece i\'ve ever seen in my life. Anyway regaurdless i\'ve never got to play the old school NES series of FF and i heard VI is almost as good as VII but i think i can safly say that unless a sequel is made....which would probably end up just as IX did Sephiroth, Cloud, Jenova....yup thats where i\'ll stay.

You mean \"Legacy of Kain\", who\'s latest series installment is called Defiance... don\'t forget the previous 4 games: Blood Omen, Soul Reaver, Soul Reaver 2 and Blood Omen 2. You can hardly understand such an incredibly involved and complex story without playing all of them at least twice. :P

Yes I\'m a LoK fanatic.

Edit: Damn you Sep for signing me out of my Moogie account and making me post as you!! ><
