Title: Walking through players...
Post by: Frarda on December 14, 2004, 11:52:53 pm
I know its been repeatedly discussed, but certainly players can be made solid without compromising people\'s ability to move. It seems silly to be able to walk through other combatants, perhaps we could just push people out of our way, and still have them solid?

nah, it wouldn\'t be good if you could push people. You could just accidentally \'nudge\' someone off a cliff. :) The only way is to be able to walk through people.

No, we always have been able to walk through people, and we almost always will be able to....

If you can find that news, then you can prove me wrong :D

I thought about that too, but lots of games are set up so you can\'t walk off cliffs but you can run off, so couldn\'t it be set up in some way so that you cannot be pushed off?

Actually pushing someone off a cliff might be a wise battle strategy....

Well ill  put in my 2 cents about this.

Well lets say your friend has a hit on him buy a merch. Your helping your friend and if a  merch can walk right thru you whats the point? Having soiled players make the game more real, and for blocking people thats retarted( i dont see many people blockin each other at the store or on the side walk in real life.), if someone is blocking you there should be a way to make your self ghost  so u can walk thru people and a way to turn you soiled. But i think you should be soiled. I agree with Frarda on the pushing off a cliff being a good battle strategy. And first off what are you doing hanging around a cliff.  So really  its all fair if you get close enough where one push kills you thats your fault. You should know to have backed far away from the cliff so if some1 does push you  can defend yourself.

Also, IMO, if you manage to be away from the computer for long enough that you can get pushed to your death then thats your fault, log off or go somewhere safe.

Walking through players is the most stupid thing ever! Ummm...

Really, if you can walk through someone it would be waird to fight, really just think about it!! You being inside someone else ehn in combat, WOW! One heck of a wird battle! Besides if anyone is blocking yo way and is not responding to ya, KILL THEM!!!! Easy, really! The only type of player that should be able to walk through another is a phatom//ghost//mage ---}

Pushing players off a cliff is fun. Well, it wont give you more experience points, but it sure would be hilarious to watch ((ESPIECIALLY IF YOU SHALL IMPLEMENT RAGDOLL PHYSICS))

I remember the mean things I did with a group of people on Tibia.
We got annoyed by some random 1337 guy so we shoved him into a corner and blocked him off with boxes and threw things at him untill he was almost dead and left him there for someone else to find 2 hours later. We also used to find afks and macroers and push them into the wilderness where they get eaten alive.
Pushing is good but is easily abused.

You have to remember that games will be extremely crowded, especially MMO\'s, if people can\'t walk through eachother. Take a marketplace for example. 500 or more people crammed together in a very small spot leaves no possible way of walking through there and people will be stuck for hours upon hours until they either commit suicide or have a GM teleport them out. And then there are all the blocking and pushing that people WILL be doing, no matter how much you tell them not to. So no. It\'s not a good idea to make players solid.

Grono is right, its good to the extent that there won\'t be that many players but there will be a lot of players...

Perhaps you could walk through people in town but not in the wilderness or something then?

Possible, not not necessary. I don\'t think anything like that would be introduced for a while.

IIRC in some older threat to this theme a acraig said solid model may be possible in combat, but not in normal.

Found it again in thread (http://www.planeshift3d.com/wbboard/thread.php?threadid=10515&boardid=11&page=1):

I\'m not sure this will every go away. Maybe only for combat. This is a very good way for people to annoy others by standing in door ways, ladders, etc.

Combat would be good maybe. I\'m still not sure.

Well, Another suggestion:

If on a certain region (not during fight) a maximal ammount of Persons  are, They will switch into ghost mode, In fight however everyone\'s solid. Or what will be the fun of working out a strategy with your archers protected by your frontline warriors (In a guild war) if the enemies easily could brake trough your battleline without the need of fighting it.

Or if someone needs to be protected you position yourself between him and the enemym the enemy runs straight trough you and finishes him off,

I\'m not a programmer so I can just make suggestions, without knowing if they would be possible or not

I\'d settle for solid only in combat, that seems like a viable option.

\"I see dead people...\"

I think everybody should be solid, but when somebody is blocking the way, you should be able to walk through him when you\'re stamina/fatique is 100%. Than you can choose for a special skill everybody has or something and you\'re able to click the person were you want to walk through, and you\'ll lose 50% of your fatique/stamina after you walked through him.

Thats an interesting idea, that could be abused in combat though, if you walk around you would keep your stamina, and then you could walk through a blocker and proceed to kill your target...

You should be able to walk through players. This prevents people from walking in to a door frame and going afk never to return. So they dont block a door

YES! I had hoped someone would make a post like this one (I used the trusty (http://www.planeshift3d.com/wbboard/images/ps/top_suche.gif)  button!)

Well IMO i think that players should be solid, BUT you are able to push someone a few meters like 3 times per 5 hours . (I don?t think a person will actually stand there for 100 hours strait just to push someone off a cliff!)

Waling through ppl is just too...i dono.. :P

afk people should be kicked after not moving or doing anything for 5 minutes or more.

Actually, thats already how it is... at least in MB, you lose your connection if you don\'t do something for like 5 minutes.

Heh, i got the solution.. In order to push somone you need full stamina.  You lose 10% of your stamina for a short period of pushing.  That should be enough.  Problem solved

thats what I said to, in UO they have that method and it works good.
