Title: Wiki
Post by: Keknehv on December 15, 2004, 02:08:59 am
Although I don\'t want this on the forums...

Could we add a wiki to the Planeshift site?

There are some excellent guides out there, like compiling and running Planeshift for a server, How to Roleplay, Installing and Running Planeshift, as well as many others.

However, currently these are found on the forum, which seems slightly inefficient

So, could we add a wiki to the site? Possible login-required, not anonymous, but I think it would help a lot of the new people to get a feel for the game.

We could even have short dissertations on the different skills, and tutorials and such.

There are many open source wikis out there, such as MediaWiki, which powers wikipedia.com, so I don\'t think that adding one would be too much trouble.

Yup, it\'s a nice idea, as long as there is nothing about quests in there... Seeing the devs quite dislike that..

Harkin\'s right... that wiki is the \"Planeshift Coding Wiki\"... it looks like it is almost completely about compiling the source code and such.

And I agree, quests should not be on the wiki, but many other interesting things could be, like descriptions of the weapons and possibly even maps.

Wikis just seem to fit with open source projects.

i hope that was tongue in cheek. there is still, at least in concept, fair use provisions in copyright law.

I\'m confused... do you mean that a wiki would be against the rules? Do you mean that the coding wiki is against the rules?

The wiki would, of course, be officially hosted by the Planeshift team.

Also, Planeshift is (mainly) under the GNU GPL, so we can post stuff about it pretty much anywhere, right?

Unless the developers are greedy losers like Microsoft, who attempted to claim that just about every open protocol, like HTTP, DNS, FTP, and such are owned by them.

Whats so bad about being told what a certain weapon looks like and its stats?

Yes... I agree.

I agree that we shouldn\'t have guides on the Quests and such, but no weapon descriptions? No skill guides? That\'s bizarre.

It will be inevitable anyways when Planeshift starts being played a lot more.

For example, do you know how many quest walkthroughs for RUN, ESCAPE there are? (I used to play that game ***hangs head in shame***)

That\'s not true actually. Tutorials and guides are fine, as long as they don\'t contain information on the contents of the game, such as \"If you increase 12 STR you will get 58 HP and be X stronger\". But for example, if you write a tutorial on HOW to mine something, it\'ll be \"You set your mining thing to this button and you use that button to kill the wall, and that\'s it, etc. etc.\". That\'s not bad, but if you start making detailed descriptions of where the diffrent mines are located, you\'re violating the copyright. :)

Besides, if you want to know about something, why not look up that kind of information ingame? You gotta remember there is no internet in Yliakum. You can\'t just look on a page and be enlightened. You have to go out there and talk to people. You know? Talk! Be social! Sounds difficult, yes, I know... But I\'m sure you can do it. :)
