Title: Idea for a critter
Post by: FalcoN on December 22, 2004, 04:21:57 am
(http://users.pandora.be/nvb/planeshift/crystal_boar.jpg)

Something I created last night.

Crystal boar:
Pig-like appearance with 2 tusks made out of crystal.

Peaceful creature that roams the forests around Hydlaa city or can be found in a domesticated version on some farms where they are kept for their tasty meat and precious crystals.

Can also be hunted to aquire meat, skin and crystals.
Male types are slightly larger and more agressive and will defend themselves when attacked.

I haven\'t had time to texture it yet, but I wanted to know what the community thinks about this idea and/or design.

Feel free to comment  :P

Are you sure that that\'s 600 tris?  Looking at it it seems more like under a hundred, so there must be a whole heap of small, invisible faces somewhere.

If I were you I would create a smoother version (Have you had a look at it in CS, that autosmooths? ) - That is unless you want it to a) be smaller than a modern boar or b) have a crystal-like body appearance.

Theres a lot of polys in its ears that could probably be removed, and the sides and butt aren\'t round enough, it looks like a square with legs and a head! Its a good concept though, and the model is alright.

The way the mesh is where a neck of some sort should be would probably make it rather hard to animate the head turning, too, btw.

You\'re absolutely right, swift.

I\'ve managed to reduce it to 340 tri\'s (way too much detail in the ears)
and enabled auto-smoothing this time.

Looks better I think.

Made a quick 2MB clip about it:

MUCH better. I think you\'ve managed to solve EVERY issue mentioned so far.

The rear legs definately look off, they\'re very very thin and don\'t \"flow\" into the body, it looks like they\'re just glued on the bottom of it.
The body is looking good now!

I\'ve made the rear legs a bit larger and thicker.

Shaping up to look very nice. You might also try making the legs thicker, so that they\'re a square shape, and see how that looks.

Here\'s another creature I made up last night.
It also has 2 tusks made of crystal.
I don\'t have a name for it yet.
Looks a bit like a baby-elephant with 2 trunks and no ears. It\'s not that big though, about the size of a very very large dog.
Polycount is 330. Haven\'t textured it yet.
Let me know what you guys think about this design. Any suggestions ?

It\'s weird, maybe reduce the number of trunks by one.

Nah! The two trunks should stay, they look soo cool (weirdly cool) on the critter... hmm... there seem to be a little bit of wasted polygons on the model that should be removed, or, or it\'s just me...

Cloopa? That seems kind off apropriete fer the critter or not?

The only place I can see where there might really be wasted polygons is the bottom of the neck, but I can\'t see it well enough to tell, so I can\'t guarantee that.
