At the core, simple physics. If the bullet hit the flat of the blade it would shatter.
Still, the blade took a horrendous quantity of damage from a .50 Cal before breaking. .50 Cal rounds go through Kevlar (and usually, people) like it wasn\'t there. Yet, it took 7 bullets directed at the exact same location just to break the blade.
I expected it to snap on the first hit.
Kudos to the swordmaker.

Holy crap , that was pretty sweet with the slow motion and all , spilt that 9mm bullet in half. lol, to bad its not in english

wow and I thought those action movies were full of crap when they had the guy deflecting bullets with a katana. Guess its halfway true to a point. But wow, just wow as far as how beautiful that blade was constructed. He must have put a good 3 or more years into it.

thats crazy,... it just cut the bullet in two!? Couldnt belive my eyes when i saw that movie.......
-
err... you people didn\'t know katana can cut through metal?
That\'s what katana is all about...

yep drak i think we all know, its just that ... it cut 50 cal. ammo ( 50 cal. can penatrate tank armourif you didn\'t know.)

yeah... that and the law of action and reaction makes it kinda logic that katana would cut it :P

I knew that lightsabres can reflect bullets but Katanas made by metal!
Impressive.
I just never want to meet a Katana out in the dark :D
-
and you all called me a mad katana whilder NOW WHOS LAUGHING!!!.......o.o
*hugs his rl katana and getting multiple cuts on his face at the same time*

I think one reason why it did so good was because of the length it was away from the gun barrel. You might think that the closer you are, the more damage would be brought to the katana. In reality, because of the katana\'s unique shape and material, it might actually do the opposite.
When the bullets are coming out of the barrel, they are super heated from the combustion within the gun. When meeting the air, the bullet is cooled surely but not to a super high degree. If you have ever been to a shooting range, you should know that bullets are still pretty hot after about 20 seconds of being shot.
When this white hot bullet hits the curved blade, its very weak density wise. The bullets you can see in the movie move slightly upwards or downwards depending on the placement of the blade. This slides them and cuts them in half. Still amazing though, one small 4 foot blade could stop something so destructive. The sight is even more impressive after seeing that 50 cal just DESTROY that barrel. :D the destruction just makes me so giddy.

You can\'t assume all Katanas are this strong. The Smith may have been particularily good, and may have folded the metal more times than most.
-
That is cool. Dang, I\'m saving those clips...
-
Not all katanas are that strong http://www.dailyfoo.com/index.php?i=1326 (http://www.dailyfoo.com/index.php?i=1326) :P

LOL I forgot about that one, Kudos for finding the link :D

its actually got more to do with pressure then the law of action and reaction drak.
When the area is small, a moderate force can create a very large pressure. This is why a sharp knife is good at cutting things: when you push the very small area of the sharp blade against something, it creates a really large pressure.
@Syzerian
man nice link :D ... \"i belive we need medical attention\" lol

Not necessarily true actually. As the bullet leaves the gun, it has a certain force exerted on it, giving an acceleration. Only after a certain distance does the bullet reach its maximum velocity. If they placed the katana at the point of maximum velocity, it would do the most damage there.
Cool video though :) I didn\'t think it would hold up to the .50 cal bullets that long :D

Aww man, now i really want to buy that katana set i found in town the other day XD. it was really cheap too.

If it\'s cheap don\'t try using it 8o I mean look like 4 links up, scary stuff.
-
Yeah, you never know when the blade will fly off and impale you. :P
-
Well a sword that breaks like that probably had a lot of impurities in it, or simply was folded way too few times. You can\'t expect everything mass produced to be perfect, you can have a defective sword. I wouldn\'t expect all those swords to be that weak. However, I wouldn\'t expect anything that cheap to be strong at all.
