Title: Edit your name and such
Post by: Myrtl on December 23, 2004, 05:42:41 am
I think that we should be able to go into our profiles and edit our names. I think we should be able to do this becuase people might want to have thier guild initials in thier name or have thier guild rank visable to others. This will add variety to the forums. In case of people just spamming and changing thier name constantly all you got to do is ban them :D

Well just waiting for people to spam their usernames to ban them is useless. This is bad on so many levels.

1) That would take up SO much bandwith it\'s not even funny. Seriously, the forums would lagg out the A**.

2) It would get way out of hand and people would change them almost every 3 minutes and you would never be able to keep track of people.

3) If you have someone on your ignore or buddy list, how are you going to be able to keep them there if they change their username?

4) There isn\'t a really good reason to change a username, its just a static representation and nothing further than looking pretty. Plus if you don\'t like the name, create a new account if it\'s that important. All we\'d have are usernames like \"xXC00lM0F0LMAOXx\" and the such. This is a RP friendly forum if you haven\'t noticed

I mean changing a username serves a direct and straight purpose, and that purpose is not needed here at Planeshift3d.com

I disagree on some of those points.

1. How would this make the forum lag? Sigs are changed all the time. And so are post counts and locations.

2. Only allow name changes once a month, and have a Formerly Known As \'insert name\' tag.  Like the location tag. Problem solved.

3. Why would this change?  You are buddy/ignoring the user, not their name.  Your lists would simply change with the names.

4. There is good reason to change your name.  Role-playing.  If your character changes or evolves, then you may wish to change your name to evolve with it. Take me for example.  My username was chosen purely for RP purposes; it isn\'t my name, it is where my character started.  When the time is right, it will be changed.  As for creating a new account, this contradicts your #3 statement.
Also, not-liking-your-name-and-creating-a-new-account would and does create many dead accounts and actually misrepresents the number of PS members. Do you think that there are 10471 PSers and no duplicates.

It seems that I disagree with all of your points (besides the banning, that would be silly) :).

I, personally, would like to keep my current account when my true IC name is given.

However, none of this is likely to happen.

Buddy list and such would show the name you signed up with

How about you just create a new username, and not bother other people about it.

i dislike this idea dor a particular reason, if you have ever played a game like that you will know that a player could impersinate another player like lets say jim could be jinn or jlm or even jim. get it? lets see another one, ummm tom t0m to/\\/\\ +om some are not that great but some are hard to spot, a real good leet speaker could give tons of them
