I made this thread to discuss the new character creation system. In my opinion it is brilliant for some but annoying for others.
If you are actually creating your character during the in-game creation process and haven\'t thought of background, characteristics, skills and so on the system is great. It helps you with all of this and adds a lot of life and depth to your character. :))
On the other hand, if you have already made up your characters profile with a background, characteristics and a plan on what skills to use, the creation system is annoying. In that case you just want to pick your skills from a list and go on playing without getting furious that the game doesn\'t support the background and skills you want. :(
I don\'t really know if it is a good solution to give the option to just pick skills from a list instead. It might encourage power gamers, and I at least wouldn\'t like that. But the serious roleplayers whom already have their profiles ready can easily get annoyed of this system. It is very nicely done though, and very original. Especially considering it is propably far from finnished. Keep it up devs!
I am eager to hear your opinions on the character creation system.

Well I completly agree with you. I tried to set up my backgroud to match my char and I ended up with a mage thats less than proficiant in the blue and azure way but has 8th rank herbal stuff O.o
I was supposed to be a pure dark/brown way mage with some knowleadge in pharmacy. Not a Super uber docter that knows good magic :P....not to mention i\'m a female since male diaboli are stuck in the city(even though im supp be a lemur)..... (btw did pharmisist chage to apothacary?)
So I think what a good solution to this would be to bring back the old char creation meathod from MB and use this current one for players that have no idea what their char background should be.
EDIT sp

Same here, the CP system kinda sucks because I couldn\'t get what I wanted without it being -50.
I wanted to be a mage of the Azure and Crystal Way with some skill is Swords as a secondary, but ended up with swords, axes, and polearms being at the top.

My friend had to try recreating for 2 hours until he got even close to wha he wanted. He said the part where you chose two life events doesnt even change anything.
-
Heh Lardhoc, I was about to post about it, but you said exactly what I wanted to say. I\'ll try to not repeat you. :P
Maybe it\'s possible to combine the two systems. If you don\'t have a thought-out character background then this is a great system (though still needs some work). But if you already know everything before running the game then it should allow you for more customization. Perhaps more generic events which you can edit and put your own details would be good then.

Yes, I would like the option to just pick stats like in MB and maybe write my own background and characteristics. The risk is that those who have no idea of their characters\'s background goes for this option because it is more simple and more powerful for powergamers. Maybe you should be given less CP if you chooses to pick your skills from a list, that would discourage powergamers and non-roleplayers from creating characters without depth.

I sort of like it. It wan\'t too hard to get what I wanted (approximately, though), but my problem is that there are things that (supposedly) are extremely rare, but that will be selected quite often, at least if you have a significant player base. This means that one one hand, there will, despite the (IMO vast) list of different options be a lot of people who have had the same events, taking the uniqueness out of them (and some are really really fascinating!), which would be sad, and OTOH, there will be these \"rare\" events and occurances having occured rather often.
Example: crystal eclipse. It is supposed to have lasted a whole day, and is very very rare (and thus remembered by almost everyone), i.e., a once-in a lifetime event. However, if let\'s say, only 10 players choose it, then you end up with 10(!) crystal eclipses per year, which wouldn\'t be all that memorable anymore. Let this number become 100, which IMO is still very small, and the crystal will be dark almost half a year (that\'s one reason why I didn\'t pick it)!
Therefore it is with great sadness that I propose every event that wouldn\'t be realistic to have happened for each and every player to be taken out. :(

You have to remember that those events and choices only work to determine your stats. Your story itself can later be edited and changed to whatever you want.

In this case, I don\'t think it\'s a good idea at all. I mean, what\'s the point? Sure, it\'s not simply distributing points, but OTOH, doesn\'t it hurt realism badly to create one background and then, upon completion, edit it, possibly making it something completely different? Sure, it gave me some really nice ideas, and I\'ll probably keep some in the actual background, but still...
-
Whenever I try to make a new char now it just gives me the same starting stats for the race as on the site (where it shows the race ststas on the site)
Is it going to be like this from now on?
I just think it should go back to the MB way.

I agree. It didn\'t take me too long to get approximately what I wanted either but it didn\'t correspond well at all to the background I had already decided on. For example I picked \"lived in lemur village\" and \"and born in temple of Laanx\" just because it gave me cheap magic ranks. But according to my profile I grew up at my family mansion and no special circumstances surrounded my birth. It would be much better if people whom, like me, already has their character profile ready was able to create his or her character in the Molecular Blue fashion.

So finalmently, do developpers keep the new system or change it ?
Me I think like Lardhoc : the new system has good point but we can\'t personalize our character whithout take special background that didn\'t correspond to the story we want. I prefer the old system of advantages and disadvantages.
-
The system is a response to the normal system where you choose statistics and skills by arrows and 100% customize your character.
We want to give it a more role playing touch where you choose events, and they mirrors on your statistics.
This is what have HAPPEND before you played your character, you can still be that magician with martial arts skills if you train. Your characters life has just begun.
This is just the stats you will be starting with, not everyone got the childhood they prefered :P

Sounds good but:
* Getting a level takes a lot time, so starting with 12 is really really a big advantage.
* A lot of events aren\'t available (father killed ...)
I\'d like to be able to add events we want that doesn\'t change our character stats.

So just edit your character story (aka \'Modify Description\') once you have him or her uploaded. It\'s not a big deal.

Well as Seytra says, there is no point at all in this case ...
-
Well we could do the morrowind approach. There was one option where the guy at the begining would just ask you A series of questions about how you would quest and do things and gave you stats for how you completed the questions. For example,
\"You see a fair maiden being robbed accross the street, do you:
A) Slay all of the men down with a single swipe of your sword? (Sword skill +)
B) Get your herbal medicines ready, and draw your wand? (herbalism +)
C) Silently sneak from the shadows and cut each one of the robber\'s throat? (Stealth +, Dagger +)
D) Shoot them down from long range? (Archery +)
or E) Ignore them and do your taxes :P (accounting +)
Just a rough idea, kind of interesting and you can see through each of the questions pretty easily and pick what you want while still having the RP flair.

After thinking about it more, I actually would like the system, if you started with more CP. It was very difficult to get a positive number even without creating how I wanted.
But, yeah, it does encourage roleplaying, and is alot better than just choosing a class...
-
The current system looks very nice.. but having the ability to re-distribute all points from scratch is even more appealing, the first part will be used to give us a base stat which we could just use.. or we can edit that base stats results to our desire.

Ok, Im a bit dizzy reading all this because I have not yet downloaded CB, (and I cant until I can get an accelerator to make the download go faster or an online answering machine so I can catch calls while the download takes several hours)(I have dialup, AOL) but I do want to be prepared when I finally get what I need to download it. I\'d maybe like a few pointers on this new system (feel free to email me, Baddboy317@aol.com). Now from what I can see here, using this more RP based system is not giving you exactly what you want in the way of stats and skills. Its all a matter of preference. Some people like a little more RP in an RPG game and like the system. Some people (like myself) like more game in their RPG. I think it should be made so people can choose if they want to create their character with the new RP-based method in CB, or the old Game-based method in MB. I personally like Whemyfield\'s idea; it gives you customization (because you can somewhat see through the questions) and the RP flair (because it uses text and realistic situations).
