Title: Question about darkness & shadows
Post by: Greatwolf on December 27, 2004, 07:06:51 am
Just a quick question. I know the sewers and deathrealm are suppose to be dark and all but is it really suppose to be this dark? It\'s to the point where I can\'t even see where I\'m going and my char itself is pitchblack. Is this how it looks like from everyone else\'s setup?  ?(

Thanks

Yes. Increase the brightness of your monitor a bit. I put mine from 50% up to 75% to be able to see in the sewers.

Yes, those are all possible solutions but it\'s not good for your eyes. I turned down the brightness on my monitor for a reason. So far the only game I\'ve encounter that\'s giving me a hard time to see in the dark is PS. :(

Oh, I took Tang Ernie\'s suggestion and posted this one up on the forum too. Is anyone else having this problem also? I\'m using a ATI 9800 w/ Radeon 9800 2.5.67 drivers.

Thanks

Uh...What problem...Are you still refering to the blackness or another one. You did not ID what the \'this one\' that you posted on the other forum was.
I\'m confused.
I am also using ATI (though a 7000) and I can see ok, since I loaded the Catylist drivers.
PlaneShift has always had really heavy dark areas. I think it is the engin. And yes it would be great to have an in game (software) Gamma controll, but we don\'t. :(
All we have for now is, turning out the light, drawing the shades and turning up the brightness.
If there is a solve (like a file I can adjust) I\'d love to know also.

I agree with you XypYtZ, PS has always had dark areas, but I think the reason they might have made DR dark is to make it really hard to get out. I mean, coming out of the realm of Death and returning to life shouldn\'t be a sunny picnic, it should be rummaging around in a dark hell-hole until you find a match, which you use to light a torch only to discover a horribly disfigured and pointy monster thing is breathing heavily on your face.

I like that picture.

Hey, anyone else have textures(other than chars) go completely black at night?

The problem I\'m referring to is in the last screenshot I posted. There\'s a bunch of long streaks of wierd shapes in black, blue, and pink colors. If you can\'t see in that screenshot I\'ll outline and highlight the sections in red so you know where it is.

Angelfire does not allow direct image linking, unless it\'s your own account(due to cookies), so we can\'t see that image.

I\'ve changed the host so hopefully my screenshots should show up now.

I still can\'t see your pictures. Freewebs isn\'t really the greatest host to use, because they don\'t let anyone actually see the pictures that you upload.

Ooh, you get the giant pitch-black raven flying around your camera too?

Only happens to me in the arena...but these large black polygons go spinning around in different angles and stuff - looks kinda like a raven...I thought it was a monster at first, until my friends asked me wth I was doing running around like an idiot and not helping. :D

ok hopefully my screenshots are finally getting through and I don\'t have to go looking for another host again. haha.

Yup, looks like you\'re having the same problem as me. I notice that it helps if I turn vertex buffer off under ps settings though.

I do notice another problem though, not sure if it\'s related to those funny shaped polygons: when I enter the dungeon I notice some clipping issues where there\'s a repeated pattern all over the screen. Best way to describe it is think original Doom with no clipping code and you walk through a wall. It seems to only happen when I go down the dungeon entrance. Once I\'m inside the dungeon it disappears. It seems this glitch is most likely to show up during environment map transitions like for example town to dungeon, stairs inside tower going to top of tower etc.

no, mine\'s not like that, i get funny black and gray lines across all the textures with shadows. the game is still playable, but kinda annoying at times. the creatures and people\'s shadows work fine, just not the textures of walls, the ground, steps, stuff like that. it is also fine on the way to the other town, no problems there for some reason. every once in a while i see those things, but i think they\'re from spells.

When I\'m in the death Relm I can\'t even see where I\'m going, there is no path. I can\'t find my way out for ages when I end up there, which happens more than it should because of glitches and a rat randomly kills me ;)

Yikes!

i noticed to, that some textures sometimes (not always) appear pitch-black.

restarting the client sometims helps (for some time)

reinstalling always helps (for some longer time)

since ive had troubles that the installation got screwed up somehow (wouldn\'t let you start the game again, until you reinstall) i guess there must be some bug somewhere which sort of corrupts files in your installdir... (or at least change some parts of the configuration)

thats the only explanation why there can be errors (like wrong angles [180 degrees wrong!!] with the 3rd person follow cam) that stay after restarting the game, even after rebooting the whole os.

the interesting questoin about the black textures is, if there are no textures at all... or if they are just shaded to absolute black...

Edited for language.

My monitor is calibrated for photography work. I can\'t change the brightness etc without messing that up. The game (when it actually works) was just as dark if not darker. I run around on glimpses of light and guesswork.

An in game gamma solution would be ideal.

all i can say is stop whineing because lots of us can\'t even play(i think that that is a bigger problem than thngs being dark) you all can actualy see inside the game we can\'t even see the char. creation screen X(

Xenix, I understand your anger but your post contributes nothing.

If you\'re using the Linux client (probably not, but anyhow), just edit /usr/bin/psclient to add the line
Code: [Select]
xgamma -gamma 1.2 before the exec psclient line. Only weakness is you\'ll have to change it back manually.

If you\'re using the Windows client, you may be able to find some other technique to increase gamma for gameplay and reset it to normal later.
