Title: Faster Load Time
Post by: TripX on July 06, 2002, 04:47:30 pm
Your Planeshift would load alot faster if it didn\'t have to access the zip files first, just unpack the zip files and make it run straight through, would run alot smoother im sure too.   :]

Also, I noticed that when I load up in OpenGL mode that I have no mouse icon... eeps.... thought about maybe converting to dx8?

This would make your advantage as well so more users with out the 3d cards would be able to play your game as well, not in the slow safe-mode.   :]

Thanks,

Thanks for the advice, while much of what you stated is true, this is a game that is very much in Alpha?actually it is not even a game yet.

So tuning for performance is not the order of the day, also Open GL was chosen because the game is and will be cross platform, direct X is windows only. There is a software mode for the game should you not have a open GL capable card.

Is Direct X ever to be in the works, perhaps, but at the moment I am not aware of any great effort being made to make it so.

We use Crystal Space as the graphical engine for rendering.  It works by using different \'plugins\' for different implementations, so you can \'plugin\' what rendering you want.  At the moment the CS team only has a software render and an OpenGL renderer.   As soon as somebody comes along and develops a DirectX plugin for Crystal Space then Planeshift can make use of it.

We are already working with the CS team to decrease the load time for models and have been getting good results.

My advice is more than a welcome,  just a friendly gamer trying to help you out so you can get this awsome mmorpg off on its way.

Oh, check out my website as well, im going to be developing gamesplit network in a while after time.  the game servers are going to be for MMORPG only... so everyone thats always whining about \"I cant find a server\" will be no more, just head on over to gamesplit.... anyone who wants to help in the developing software I would be MORE than glad for your help too.  =)

Thanks,
