Title: Crash when joining/"Requesting World"
Post by: SnakerVII on December 29, 2004, 08:33:37 am
ok.. I got a char made, but when I click him and hit \"join game\" i get to the loading screen ,but on the second line of text , \"Requesting World\", I crash up.  Any suggestions on how I could fix my problem? Already tried no sound. No sound and Direct Sound seem to work the best for me. But I can\'t get past the world loading screen.  Help is appreciated =P

I have the lastest update and it still crashes when Requesting world.

Do i have to create a new character though as i\'m using one that i made before todays update?

Edit - Just disabled sound and it works

Mine crashes on me certain times of the day.  It seems as if it happens because there are too many people on.

FIXES:

1. Turn off sound, this is the main problem

2. Run the updater ALWAYS before you play

3. if all else fails, get a gm to reset your Characters position, this worked for Vanderbal

I am not sure this is always a good idea. Yesterday I had no problem playing for hours without a break, but today after updated to newest 29.12. client I also have the problems during joining games or during level transition... last thing I see is \"Loading World\".

Sound is off for testing.
Strange is: with a chance of 1 to 10 it works loading, no clue why or whats the difference. Whenever I see \"Starting GUI\" I am in the game - seems to be really a loading bug, maybe I simply have to delete the level-zip files, that helped for the first time.

Tried sound off, I test around a little bit, if this wont help I step back to client version of 26.12.... which ran very stable, even with sound.

I didn\'t have any of these crashing problems until i updated today [29 Dec]. I also crashed a few times when logging [when loading world] as well as doing transitions between areas. Running full screen seemed to have solved the initial logging on problem [instead of windowed, which wasn\'t a problem before the update].

So it\'s either the latest update, or something changed in the game between today and yesterday.

...exactly the same for me, no problems till update today.

I tested a little bit and the only solution I found is to set planeshift to 800x600,32bit fullscreen disabled sound disabled (my desktop is 1024x768,32bit).

@ Adair: nice attitude. You want the bug fixed but are too lazy to even post a decent bug report, like including the diagnostics file.

As for the problem: this seems to be related to certain systems only (probably an OS issue), and has crept up with the latest update.

I tried now to start the game and do level transitions
with the following config and it worked (I tried to connect to server about 20 times to verify this works):

set planeshift to 800x600,32bit
     fullscreen must be disabled
     sound must be disabled

desktop is set to 1024x768,32bit

I can play with this configuration, but only when I set mouse-curser outside of planeshift window during level-loading ( \"loading world\" ) and placing mouse-cursor in game window again when its loading and I am standing on plaza. When I leave mouse-cursor inside planeshift window it crashes with the same exception as described above.

When I am in the game then, there is no problem - I can play and move through level transitions.

When I try in fullscreen mode I do not even get any exception, only a black screen and an (invisible, in background) error-message-popup from windows - maybe with the same exception as in non-fullscreen mode.
- - - -

My system is Win 98, 512MB, GForce 2 Ti 64MB, newest official drivers (dated 16.12.2004 from nVidia)

Okay guys great ideas. Ive had the same problem just today too but................After minutes of headbanging the desk I came up with a simple solution ( that worked for me) all I did was uninstall the game and intall it again at the website.  I think its because one of you files gets screwed up by the updates.  try it out.

Moving the mouse out of the PS window doesn\'t change anything in my case. Maybe Im going to d/l the new 0.3.005 version and try with that instead of updating the 0.3.004 one.

@ Black Kitsune: of course downgrading the client will work, since this bug crept up during yesterdays update, which means that it\'ll not be present if you don\'t update. ;)
I will move the current version to another folder, though, in case someone wants to run a diff, in case it actually is a file corruption problem instead of a code bug.

1. already done off course... no consequences
2. I dont start the game with the play icon but with the updater.exe...
3. No no no. the crash happens when I respawn too !!!

When another map is loading : sometimes the load starts sometimes not... the most of the time it crashes  while the client is requesting the world but the bug once happens just when I click on the start button before the display of the loading page !

Moreover I saw sometimes the name of a player on the server (green font blue underligned) written in reverse font...

then crash

full screen : windows error message \"do you wanna send the error message to microsoft\"

windows mode : planeshift error message : \"the error was saved in a dump file dmp ...\"

I can give my dmp file if a dev asks for it (no need to make the forum growing)

@Seytra: I read something in another thread about opening a window in background:

http://www.planeshift3d.com/wbboard/thread.php?threadid=12684&boardid=33&styleid=3&sid=f0ca4db80b356bc26a1420b7163561cb

...that is may help to open a window in background... I just thought its a joke, BUT it works for me - now i can play again with fullscreen, but sound still not working.

I use exactly following sequence:

 - Reboot
 - Start \"Desktop\" drawer window... and leave in background
 - Start Planeshift -> it does NOT crash now ...

If I do not open the desktop drawer it crashes, if it once crashed and then I try to open desktop drawer -> it does not help any more, the trick only works directly after reboot.

UPDATE: this seems to work for plaza, but still sometimes during level transitions it crashes... so back to non-fullscreen and mouse-cursor-trick
Title: Possible cause
Post by: Snyk on December 30, 2004, 10:05:09 pm
I was experiencing the same issue, game would quit at the \"loading world\" screen.  I tried reinstalling the game only to get intermittent success.  (I even kept a backup copy of the whole freshly installed and updated game directory since I was convinced that a file was somehow getting corrupted after I ran the game once).  After copying my pristine files from my backup directory to the actual game directory several times and running the game to no avail I realized that something else must be the cause.

Then It  ocurred to me  to check my connection to the server.   With a:    ping -n 100 planeshift.fragnetics.com
I found out I was geting 11% packet loss!   after resetting my internet connection and waiting for the packet loss to go down to 4% (best I could get) I was having much better luck logging in.  I actually played the game for 2-3 hours with no problems (except for the ocassional pause - probably another lost packet)!

So I wonder if a great deal of this could be peoples connection to the server,  the game may be less tolerant of packetloss when logging in and zoning...

Oh and defragging the HDD, trimming down my startup items (including shutting off my AV before starting the game), and turning down the windows visual effects helped a ton as far as speed went.   Of course now my windows XP looks like 2000 but Planeshift runs great.  Hope this helps some folks.

Title:
Post by: Seytra on December 30, 2004, 10:36:05 pm
@ ronxena: I just tried the desktop drawer suggestion, but it didn\'t do anything about the crash (I rebooted before trying). However, it did have another effect: PS managed to save a dump file for the first time! Before that, it would always tell it wasn\'t able to save the file.

@ Snyk: I just tried, but I didn\'t loose a single ping packet during the time of starting PS and it crashing.

Oddly, the client log, psclient.txt, lists sound initialisation problems as the last entries, despite me having disabled the sound in pssetup.

I\'m going to post these in the bug threads once I have uploaded the dumps.

I dont think that is the real problem for all startup-crashes, because if I install the original version of planeshift using the installer there is no problem. The problem occurs after updating the game with planeshift-updater for the files from 29.12. ...

And I have packet-loss 0% at (for the 100 ping tries)...

i`ve got the same problem as Adair !! But im not so lazy as him hehehe so here is that note after click YES :)

\"Saved dump file to \'E:PlaneShift Crystal Blue\\Planeshift_Version_Dec 27 2004_Addr00409CAS.dmp\' Please email this file to the planeshift developers, detaling how this happened. If you have concerns about privacy, see http://watson.microsoft.com/dw/1033/dcp.asp\"

That appears after click \'YES\'.  I can`t read that *.dmp file cuz my computer can`t read it :(

Any suggestions ?

I think the problem I describe before is a connection problem because when the server is just up and nobody is playing Ive no problem. So I think this because 2 person try to connect at the same time...

Here is a crash dump.  The game crashes when \"Requesting World\" is displayed. (Sound is set to software. game is windowed and set to 32bit 1024*768 and virtex buffer objects are turned off)

The game was updated on 12/30. I did not try the game before updating.

Are you still using the same config file?  Like for your window settings (position and such?) .   Someone had suggesting installing the game in a different directory and trying that.  I know when you reinstall everything gets replaced - except some of your ingame settings (keyboard shorcuts and such)  could one of those be causing trouble with your char?  Installing in a new directory (or wiping your directory and re-installing) will give you fresh config files all around.

I\'ve noted when It crashes on me on load, I get the \"PSClient.exe has encountered a problem and needs to be shut down\" message.   Every single time It happens it\'s at the \"Requesting/Loading Word\" and the really wierd thing is that when it does, on the top left it displays a random characters name upside down and in green text/blue background (or vice versa - not sure).   I change nothing, but keep on trying to get in and when I do everything else runs fine!   Seem to have better luck around lesser busy times.   So could it be two people joining the game at the same time?  like it was suggested?

I\'m running it on XP pro on an E-machines Laptop:
AMD Athlon XP 2100+
512 MB of Ram -32MB Shared Ram
Wireless networking - connected to cable
On board ATi Radeon 320m video 32 MB Shared RAM
Cut down all extra processes and minimized XP visual effects to maximize available ram.
Direct X Sound renderer - (Sofware sound is choppy and OpenAL crashes the game on startup).

BTW where is the best place to get the OpenAL dll?  I tried the one from OpenAL.org and creative with no luck.

I\'m sort of at a total loss here.

My adventure with PS started out with version 0.3.005 installer. This installation went quick and without errors.

Starting the PS client for the first time resulted in some mousecursor-glitches and a somewhat hard to read font. No biggie, the game said to update, so I did. When I run the updater for the 1st time, it got stuck on updating the updater itself. (With an empty DOS screen open and file progress bar at 100%) It kept doing that when I retried a few times.

Then it seemed like it had downloaded the program in a ZIP, so I tried manually extracting that and started the new updater. My guess was right, as it now displayed the correct version number and started to download the normal updates. This was interrupted several times with the same error. (Open DOS window at 100% complete for that specific part)

After killing the processes and restarting the updater again, it seemed to go on at where it\'d left off, so I assumed all was well when it refused to update anymore and I started up the client again.

The PS-Client accepted my version of the game, I created a character and somehow during that (about 30 min) it gave an error that it had lost connection to the server and CTD-ed on me. After restarting the client again and rebuilding the character as good as I remembered, I clicked upload and froze on the loading world screen.

So far I\'ve tried running the game windowed and without  sound but it always stops there. Sometimes (seemingly random) the PS-client also gives a black screen on starting, killing it and restarting right away works most of the time. I tried running the setup program again (I\'ve ran it once before update) and since the update process it won\'t run anymore and gives an illegal operation error.

So far I\'ve gotten 1 prompt to make a dump file, which gave an error when I agreed. Error: Unable to create ****.dmp or something similar. (sorry, I forgot to write down the error message)
I\'ve still found one dump file in the PS directory but since it\'s 0 bytes and empty, I doubt it will be of use.

Anything I can try to make it work?

If there is a way to make it churn out error dump files again, I would gladly post that as well.

This is the first open source program I\'ve ever tried. I don\'t exactly know what I can do to help or who to turn to when something doesn\'t work.

Just to point out, quite a few people had problems with the 0.3.005 release.  If you check the mirrors thread, you can find the (more stable for some, like me) 0.3.004 release.  You can go from there.

Thx, I\'ll look into it.

EDIT:

Hmm, I\'ve reinstalled with the 0.3004 version, but now it gives the following error on starting the client.

Code: [Select]
LoadLibraryEx(E:\\PlaneShift Crystal Blue\\vfs.dll) error 1157: One of the library files needed to run this application cannot be found.

Exiting Planeshift.  Press Enter...

I don\'t know what most of that means, but it must be missing  this particular .DLL

Is there some way to get this file, so I can try if it works then?

Damn, got to get me some sleep soon (8:00 AM now) I\'ve been trying to get it to work for over 4 hours now and haven\'t even seen the game itself yet :(

@ Kleezs: It seems to be W98/ME (DOS-based windozes) that continously gives trouble to PS. As none of the devs seem to be running it, it is no surprise that all these W98 specific problems hit us undampened (the updater hang also is a DOS-WIN specific problem).

I also am unable to save a dump file, unless I open the desktop drawer. It was mentioned in another thread to solve the client crash, but didn\'t for me, just as moving the muse out of the PS window during loading Hydlaa Plaza.
The new error you get I haven\'t seen yet. Maybe the original install left something in the registry, and the old version chokes on it. I will look into that.

Post by: Kleezs on January 02, 2005, 07:58:12 pm
Thx, Seytra.

I\'ll get to work on trying the latest version again, in combination with the manual updating of some of the DLL\'s. I\'ve gotten a lot further with the 0.3.005 version so far, so maybe with some luck it will work; Trial and error all the way.

If it seems to work for other OS\'s, there must be some way to create a workaround for this issue.

Post by: Seytra on January 02, 2005, 08:38:04 pm
I have found some few entries for Crystalspace, but they are empty. There is nothing on vfs that looks like PS.
So far it seems that the dll file in question is indeed missing in your configuration, it is present on my system, along with a config file, vfs.cfg. If you don\'t have these, I can post them.
