I was really frustrated with this new version from the moment I tryed to move. I played molecular blue and I know you didnt really change the movement style via keypresses, but the ctrl/mouse1 and 2 interface is kind of annoying and hard to use. Being that this game is more point and click oriented now, I felt more attacted to this method, but I continued to stuggle with the controls. My sugestion would be to get rid of the ctrl presses and go straight to wasd and mouse moves like all the other ORPGs and single games like Morrowind. It would be so much better...
Also, you need someway to change the screen resolution, or atleast, a redesign of the UI so that it doesnt feel crowded and cramped. I felt totally surronded and only had a few square inches of space to view with.
Thats what really jumped out at me after playing for a little while.
-
I agree, most games the looking system is easly done with the mouse, fast percise and everyone knows how to use it. the controls in PS requires 4 keys just for the view, thats aweful in my opinion. the point and click stlye isn\'t very fun myself, if you had a target like thing in the middle of screen or something like a FPS or morrowind had it would feel like your actualy looking at it and picking it up. the mouse look was terribly slow as well completely useless basicly as you have to run your mouse across the pad like 3 times to do one full turn, also having a target style instead of the less favorable point and click would work right in with it nicely.
I don\'t know why but it seems like everyone has trouble playing this for some reason, its like they all play on these ancient crap comps that can\'t handle anything, I run fine on my older computer, the 1000x800 isn\'t bad really, though it would be nice if they cut a lot of that unnessary large framing from the menu boxes like chat and stats boxes. Veiwwise its not bad though of course it can be improved but its a minor issue at this time so don\'t expect anything anytime soon.

What? I have been using wasd in PS since day one. Though the combination of using them with the left and right buttons was a little to get used too. The only bad thing is that I have to lift my right hand off the keyboard to use the mouse. Though after a few hours of crystal hunting you got used to the controls all right ;) Having to look in every direction you got to know the controls like the back of your hand except probably better.
[Edit] Hint: the mouse view is not worth nothin\'. Just get used to the keyboard controls then just use the mouse for targeting and stuff and it will get a lot better :) [/Edit]
-
I use the keyboard for movement and view, (Except turning which is on the side buttons of my mouse). the mouse look ingame is totaly useless and unless they really speed it up it will always be useless.
Having to learn the controls like that is cumbersome, plus you have to click a tons of keys to do everything. its not horrible I mean it could be a lot worse, just they could have made it better easly.
-
You are all aware that you can change all your key settings...right?
Make them whatever you want, the {set} controll, in the options menu does record whatever you press and you can set your mouse movement speed in the options menu as well 8o you even have controll over the vertical and horzontal speed seporatly.
The only warning I can place is that you need to remember to {set} keys that are not currenlty set since the system does not check assignments automatically.
To repeat:
A: you can make your own Macros (sadly no loops and delays are included).
B: you can set your own keys.
C: you can change your speed controlls.
What do you people want a freeking mind-reading device?
Oh and screen resolution: it is in the \'PlaneShift set up\' utility, you can even have a custom one. You can also change your draw distance, vertex buffer, min/max frame rate and depth: you can close the windows you don\'t want or just set the transparency way up...I don\'t understand the problem.
-
I don\'t see what the problems is either, i think this game this very easy to control, plus you have the power to change a good deal of things about it if you need to.
And the lag/hardware problems people are having, havent seen anything of them.
-
Just need to rework the mouse controls to be more inline with NWN or Morrowind, the keyboard setup for movement can remain active for those who prefer to move using keyboard.
-
I dont get how you guys can call a system where you have to use 2 hands to move your character good. Sure you can map out wasd to turn and stuff for you, but then you have to constantly hold down control just to move the camera around, or hold down shift to make yourself run. A system like morrowind would be so much better.
And another problem I thought of is that the game is based a lot on a point and click interface. Unlike other games where you can double click an enemy to attack, you have to press a button somewhere on the hud. Which is really annoying when you are being attacked and you have to go find a button.
The optimal system for a rpg is either fps style, or if people dont like it, then a very simple click and goto, or, 3rd person movements with camera rotating via mouse control.
For this game, the best thing would be
w - forward
a - side step left
s - back
d - side step right
mouse rotates camera when right click is pressed
and controls game play with different mouse pointers.
A very good example of this is neverwinter nights.

Do I have to point out to everyone that wasd do exactly what you are asking them to do. And for the other keys if you want to change them then just use XpYtZ\'s suggestion and remap the keys.
-
Brilliant, but first you must point out how to make the game attack a rat if I double click on it.
There are greater problems with this game then remapping the keys will fix
-
!!~Technical Demontration Version Beta~!!
Nuff said.
-
This thread is undoubtedly the dumbest thread I\'ve read in a while.
Change your keys. Change your mouse controls.
RTFM and quit whining to change things you can change already.

Macro, foo\'!
Ie: you can map keys for macro, therefore, you can map attack keys.

Well, thats true, I could map mouse1 to attack things.. that would be AWESOME! Except when I want to try and do something else. Like clicking on someone.
I am offering a sugestion that the game needs to be more UI friendly, you act like this game is the holy grail and nothing could ever be wrong with it.
Let me restate my suggestion for all the simpletons out there who read nothing but the last post in a thread.
\"The game should have an easy mouse interface where the mouse icons reflect that actions the player can take. If the mouse is over a rat, a sword would be nice, then when the user clicks with the sword icon, it attacks. For an item, a hand would be good, then a click would pick it up. Simple.\"

Not mouse1, I said attack keys.

Look, I\'m sorry you\'re lazy, but that isn\'t much of an excuse to rant. Live with it.
If you were even serious, this thread would have been started in Wishlist.
Edit:
Here, I\'ll rephrase my post for you to make it easier to understand.
I do not understand how using two computing interfaces simultaeneously is a problem. However, your dislike of it is neither an excuse nor a justification of ranting on your part. I suggest you learn to live with what you have, considering that the program offered to you, at no cost, is a technical demonstration.
If you were serious in your intent to have such a system implemented for the good of the community, you would have taken the three or so seconds required to select the \"wishlist\" forum before intiating your topic.
Furthurmore, your attitude, in particular your stubborness to accept solutions given to you, is highly detrimental to the promotion of this concept for implementation. Your arrogance is problematic as well.
implying insult to persons whose opinion you wish to change will do nothing more than force them into a more \'dug-in\' position. That is not wisdom.
If you wish to consult with me relating to any part of this post, I suggest you do so via a private message.
Good day, sir.

Here, Ill change my post so maybe you will better understand

What PS really needs is a Fallout 2 system of mouse actions - right-click and it switches to the next action, or right-click and hold to bring up an action menu.
Left-click to perform the mouse-action on the target.

lol, for some reason you still think that I am insulting the game. No, if i wanted to do that I would say,
\"W0w, ths g4me 5uxors b3c4se i h8 thse soopid cntrls!\"
Once again, to try and make you understand, I started this topic to propose a different interface. It qualifies under discussion because here we are discussing the problem and giving contrustive critisism of ideas. While people like you think that I am attacking this gaming community. I just love to chat with people like you, you misconstrue all points for the sake of argument.
I HAVE changed the key maps, I offered this new system for discussion in the discussion forum. In no way have I whined, complained, or insulted any part of the game. And \"being a tech demo\" does not make it unchangable.
But, if you really think that discussing a change is a personal attack, then I suggest you make date with some people and find out what exactly ranting and insulting is.
EDIT:
And FYI, I dont need tips from people like you on how to argue. I was not trying to \'change your mind\' for ive talked with many people exactly like you and I know that theres no way in hell that you will change your mind or concede a misunderstanding. So its totally acceptable for you to quote my first sentace and argue about that again. Ive seen it many times.

If you think this thread is so stupid, you must obviously know how to get the mouse icons to change as they move over the targets in the controls configuration.
Please be so kind as to tell us how to change the control configuration so that we can also enjoy the game as much as you do. That is left button to move, right button to perform action according to mouse icon type.

LOL. Of course he does. He\'s one of the leading programmers.
If you want to bind your keys in a way that is currently unconfigurable, either by editing the cfg files or using the Options page ingame, feel free to create and submit a mod to the developers. I\'m sure they\'ll appreciate someone helping them, rather than whining. :)

As the previous posts say:
\"The game should have an easy mouse interface where the mouse icons reflect that actions the player can take. If the mouse is over a rat, a sword would be nice, then when the user clicks with the sword icon, it attacks. For an item, a hand would be good, then a click would pick it up. Simple.\"
There has never been any whining so far, its just something a couple people decided to type. A mod to do what we are discussing would change the entire game.. As also mentioned before, it is not a problem of changing the key binds, or changing the way they bind keys.
I get the feeling that Im going to need to place that quote into my sig so that people will always know whats going on.

Well like I said else where, I am waiting for the Linux binaries to be made available seeing that I am no programmer. After seeing PS CB on a friend\'s PC (Windows), I would like to join in with the fun.
We (that is non-programmers) are providing ideas so programmers can look into it, rather than outright shunning of ideas and not even bothering to see if it can be done.
Remember that many here are coming to see what this MMORPG is about and wanting it to grow. They come from many other very successfull MMORPGs and ORPGs, where is of use (using the mouse for movement, selecting action and selecting targets with changing mouse icon pointers) is the norm.
Instead of asking for someone (programmers) to help out by looking into the idea and possibly come up with a working solution modification, they call the idea (commercially succesfull proven idea) stupid and shun it.

You do realize who you are arguing with right. Not only did one of the DEVS say this was a dumb topic, but so did 2 of the most dedicated people here! I really like the controls, myself. I have them at default, and I learned them, and they are fine. All this time you spent on this thread, you could have been learning the controls better.
You should also be happy that everyone has responded so nicely. This forum, without a doubt in my head, is the greatest game forum out of them all. There are nice people always around to help, nobody gets out-right flamed, and people actually type with proper grammar!
-
For your information, just because they have posted over 1000 times, does not mean they are always right. Each of the 3 posts you mention were made with little or no background info on the topic. This thread is to discuse a better type of movement and action UI, something that you, the 2 devs/gms, and anyone else who mentions ranting has for some reason decided that we hate the game for the reason that the control system sucks and we are too lazy to change the key binds.
Which is dumb and anyone who reads the thread will find that the views are not slanted that way at all.
But of course, if everyone continues to read just the last few posts and reply with that information, then I will constantly be posting dumb messages like this one to make you aware.

Well so far the only higher developer who has responded nicely is Moogie by the way, by syggesting a modification to be submitted (by a programmer of course).
As for the last part of your statement, and people actually type with proper grammar!, you saying that people that don\'t speak high (royal) English or English is not first language foreigners are not good enough to be part of this community or to play the game. Go to hell Mezasa, the world don\'t need elitest self-rightous big-headed arseholes like you.

My only posts were long before you even mentioned that you wanted any of those rolover features or a reworking of the default.
Your first few posts appeared to be nothing more than rants about how much you disliked the system and wanted it changed.
Sure all those features would be nice, and of course the methods are sound but right now they just are not available. I am sure that some of the ideas are slated while others are just not what the Developers want to see.
Remember that they do not want to be like all the other, repeditave MMORPGs (etc. -RPGs) that are out there ust cloning what Gariott does all the time and mimiking one another. Sure there is a learning process but never trying a new molding technique is a great way to stagnate.
Mouse rollover: great idea
New defaults: not nesiscary
It was never my intention to attack your inteligence, it only looked like you were ranting about functions that could be remedied easily.
My oppologies on that matter.

This thread is getting more and more stupid, and is no longer used for what it was intended for. Stop whining. The controls are fine the way they are.
You have 4 options:
1) Learn to play with them.
2) Wait until the devs let you configure the controls so you can play with them.
3) Make a patch that allows people to configure their controls freely, or
4) get lost.
There\'s no more discussion there, and on a diffrent note. Don\'t argue with mods. They can close your threads and delete them, and they\'re very likely to be more right than you are, and don\'t argue with the developers. They make the game in their spare time, and they definitely don\'t need people to come and whine because everything isn\'t the way you want it. The game is free, meaning you have the right to not express your complaints. You can submit a patch, or you can make a wish in the appropriate forum, and hope they will look into it.
End of discussion.
-
Ok two ideas emerged here that aren\'t too bad and we can end the thread with those.
a) A double-click action tie-able to whatever command you desire.
b) Configurable default actions depending on the type of object you are clicking on.
The rest of this (key mappings, etc.) can be done and is being done by all kinds of players everywhere.
