COMMAND.COM hanging on your Win32 machine?
Ok I got it to work with win32 (98SE). Here is the 10 step program:
1. start the updater and let it run until COMMAND.COM hangs after it downloads the updater.zip into the PS folder
2. unzip updater.zip into a new folder.
3. remove all the old files and replace them with the new ones from the new folder.
4. remove this list of dll files:
libcurl.dll
glwin32.dll
csbmpimg.dll
csddsimg.dll
csgifimg.dll
csjngimg.dll
csjpgimg.dll
rendstep_std.dll
reporter.dll
stdrep.dll
libjpeg-cs.dll
libpng-cs.dll
libmng-cs.dll
5. Download these files (list from above) from http://laanx.fragnetics.com/updater_hidden/win32 n/pwd: psteam p1ane (as found in the updaterconfig.xml file in the PS folder)
6. Move/Copy&Paste them into the PS folder
7. run the PS updater again.
8. Run the Client and log in.
9. Fall off the end of the world... nm (fixed?)
10. If you still get the COMMAND.COM hang, look at what dll it was downloading and repeat step 5 for that dll. That was all I needed to replace in that list.

Nice.
If I was still using 98, I\'d do this.
^_^

Oh well, another MMORPG updater which falls into the Win98/ME trap ... *sigh*
Anyway, thanks for posting the fix, no need to scan through the xml-spam myself, then :)

Stuck :)
-
I now officialy hate Win9x/ME.
I\'ve spent like 2 hours of movie watching time to re-implement that feature so that it SHOULD work on it, it\'s better never the less

Ok, heres a question. How do I do step 4. where do I find those fioles to delete in the first place?

Try again. I just now used the name and pwd and downloaded one of the files. No issues with the login or access.

Found it Staur,
Ronxena wrote:Try to access this url from you internet explorer: http://laanx.fragnetics.com/updater_hidden (http://laanx.fragnetics.com/updater_hidden )
There should be a popup and prompt for username/password, try user: psteam password: p1ane
Can you see this page (there should be some files visible and no error message from internet explorer, except maybe \"authorization required\" when you enter wrong user/password)?
The updater-program is simply doing the same, it accesses the above http-link...
Check your firewall applications on your machine, if you see an \"updater.exe\" or \"psclient.exe\" - you should give them access to internet because these are the planeshift applications.

Yeah I can\'t say for every browser, I\'m only using Firefox. You said the pwd isn\'t working so I figure you are getting the pop-up for name/pwd. Just type them into the correct fields and it should accept.

I have the hanging updater file but i can\'t read anything it says. 10% of the words are there, the rest are not. Arrg.

Hmm I thought that was an XP bug. This fix is for Win98 and WinME with the broken updater. If this is what you have, You don\'t need to read it to do the hack in the folder. Check your video resolution. Maybe if you drop your resolution a bit you may be able to read it. No real need to read it if you followed the instructions, though.

password does not work for me
I experienced a similar problem with the password under Windows 98SE and IE6. I tried switching between a \"l\" and a \"1\" but that didn\'t help.
What did work for me was to copy and paste the password in. Even though you don\'t get the option when you right-click the field, you can still use Ctrl-v to paste it.
Something that many are unaware of is that many password routines would see the \"1\" on the numeric pad to be different from the \"1\" across the top number row. This is why cut and paste works I think.
Hope this helps.

There is another way to obtain these files.
This is done using the updater itself. Upon updating, the updater downloads each file individually, except so much of a set has changed that it downloads the entire zip. We all know that the zips stay in the PS folder to be unzipped manually.
However, the remaining files also get downloaded before the updater hangs. They are downloaded to a temporary file in the PS folder, which is called \"download.tmp\". This file is the most recently downloaded file, i.e., just what we\'re looking for. The only things the DOS-window does is:
- copy the current file to the folder \"updatertemp\" in the PS folder
- rename the \"download.tmp\" file to whatever the filename needs to be.
Now let\'s finish the theory and dive right in! :)
Start the updater in --auto mode (this is for convenience, the normal mode will also work, but you need to restart the updater for each file)
It\'ll update happily until it encounters one of the dreaded hangs. Now it asks what to do. Don\'t respond just yet! Instead, take note of the file it is currently updating (the last filename before the error message).
Now have a file manager handy (explorer will do) and copy the file \"download.tmp\" to a temporary folder. Now rename the copy to what you took note of (or look at the updater\'s window). It is important that you copy this file anew each time, and immediately once the error message is displayed, because otherwise you\'ll not get the correct file! Verify that the filesize that the updater shows is the same as the actual size of \"download.tmp\" (this may require to refresh the view in the file manager), at least approximately (due to the byte / Kbyte conversion factor of 1024 and rounding of the filemanager).
Afterwards, hit either \"Error\" or \"Abort\". The neat thing is that the updater will continue in --auto mode.
It\'ll likely encounter this issue on some other files as well, just repeat the process above and you\'ll get them all.
Once the updater is finished, simply copy all the files from the temporary folder into the PS folder, and you\'re done.
Note that it might happen that a file needs to be placed somewhere else: copy them one by one and see whether it asks \"overwrite?\": if it does ask, say \"Yes\", but if it doesn\'t ask, look where this file actually needs to be placed (use the search function of the file manager you\'re using). Also delete the file you just placed in the PS folder so that it won\'t interfere with later updates! However, this should be very rare.
Edit: Maybe you devs could make the updater do this automatically if a file couldn\'t be replaced, so that we just need to move them? Like creating a \"failedupdate\" folder and placing all files there, with the correct directory structure for easy movement? Just a thought. :)

updater.txt
Thats what I\'m stuck at. Where can I find this file online, so I can download it manualy?

Jagean: You most liekly have an ATI Radeon 9800 or similar? There\'s a problem with a .dll, see this thread:

So has anybody actually got the updater working on Win ME?
I followed the instructions given at the start of this thread, but now the updater won\'t even start at all. I get the error message \"Updater has caused an error in GLWIN32.DLL Updater will now close.\"
-
I can\'t find the updaterconfig.xml file in the web site HELPP!!!!
looked everwhere:(
-
Here is an another solution.(not tested with ME)
Just rename this list of files (for example csgifimg.dll to csgifimg1.dll)
libcurl.dll
glwin32.dll
csbmpimg.dll
csddsimg.dll
csgifimg.dll
csjngimg.dll
csjpgimg.dll
rendstep_std.dll
reporter.dll
stdrep.dll
libjpeg-cs.dll
libpng-cs.dll
libmng-cs.dll
Run the updater. After update you will have the renamed files and new files. Delete the renamed files. Run PS. Enjoy.
-
Another thing you can try is this:
click on start and select run
type command or command.com
it will bring up a command prompt
type;
c:\\Program Files\\Planeshift Crystal Blue
then type
updater --auto
this is a text only version and it has worked for me when the regular has failed. If it downloads a new version of the updater, and it crashes. Do as above and unzip the files from updater.zip into the planeshift folder. Then run planeshift --auto again
Try this if everything else didn\'t work for you.
-
is it just me or does this look like the posts have been resaid about half way throught this thread
-
Okay, first let me say that I am a techno caveman. But I have managed to fix the @ problem. I also have the updater problem. When I run updater it tells me my version is old. It then appears to download everything okay. It says that it updated the registry etc. At the bottom of updater you have the two loader bars. The first one completes its\' loading but that is where it stops, and I get the hanging command window.
I have followed all the steps mentioned in this thread. I have removed the old dll files, and downloaded the new ones into where I took the old ones from. I also got the glwin32.dll error message when I then try to run updater. So as suggested I renamed it to glwin321.dll. I still got the error message, just with the new name. So I thought I would try removing the new glwin32.dll file I downloaded, and put back the old glwin32.dll file and try again. All this did was again leave me with the hanging command window. Yes unfortunately I am using Me.
I have tried just running Ps without updating but is says that my version is too old. I have had the game since yesterday and I am yet to play it. Could someone please help me.
Thanks.
-
Oh, I also tried to do the unzip thing as well, but could not find the file mentioned in the other thread. I did find something similiar, it was just called updater and was a zip file, so I extracted it to the Ps folder. I am not sure if this was what I was meant to do, but it didn\'t work. So I am still stuck not being able to update or play.
Cheers
-
Onthor, yes, this is the correct file. You don\'t see the extension because windows deliberately hides them.
However, if you unzipped this file into the PS folder, then it must have prompted you to overwrite the files. If it didn\'t, you didn\'t extract to the correct folder, because if you extract correctly, the updater is updated, and the problem isn\'t there anymore, enabling you to update the game itself.
So my suggestion is to
1) check the date of the updater.zip file and see if it actually has been downloaded recently, and if not, use the updater again to get it, it will do that.
2) check if you extracted the files in the correct folder, possibly by extracting them to a different folder and then manually move them, to see if it prompts for overwriting.
If this fails, then you should remove the PS install and install it again, then immediately using the zip extraction method (let the updater get it first :) ), as it is less error-prone than is the manual retrieval of the files.
The glwin32.dll needs to be backed up and re-installed manually, however. (This might be a future feature for the updater: an option to tell it to not update glwin32.dll)
-
Hey Seytra, thanks mate that worked. I now have the current version of updater, but it is now doing the freeze thing as it tries to download and install the updates. I tried to do as you suggested earlier in this thread when this happens, but I can\'t run updater in Auto mode. (Not even sure what that means.) I tried to do as you suggested in normal mode, but I couldn\'t see a way to access the files to do as you suggested. I tried doing what Dugatoar suggested by running command, but when I type what he suggests, \"c:\\Program Files\\PlaneShift Crystal Blue\" in the command window, I just get \"bad command\". Sorry for being a painful noob, but is there any more advice you or anyone can offer?
-
You\'re welcome, Onthor. To run the updater in auto mode you need to open a command prompt (from the programs menu: MS-DOS prompt). In it, you enter:
c:
cd \"program files\\planeshift crystal blue\"
updater -auto
Now the updater is running in auto mode. To access the files, you need the explorer. Navigate to the PS folder (c:\\program files\\planeshift crystal blue). This is where you need to be to follow the instructions.
-
When will the server be up and running again?
-
Hi Seytra. Mate I hate to say this, but I have no idea what this, your last post here, \" To run the updater in auto mode you need to open a command prompt (from the programs menu: MS-DOS prompt). In it, you enter:
c:
cd \"program filesplaneshift crystal blue\"
updater -auto \" means. I have spent all day trying to do this, but have failed. I run Me and it does not run Dos, but I still went looking for MS-DOS prompt in the programs menu, and I couldn\'t find it. When you say, \"cd \"program filesplaneshift crystal blue\" \", I don\'t know what the cd means. This is embarrassing to admit but I am lost. I know people will be thinking I am out of my depth, and more then likely I am, but I have played a couple of other MMORPG\'s. It is just that I have never had to be this technical to play them. So Seytra, if you could give it to me in Onthorish, that would be great.
-
OK, maybe ME doesn\'t want you to have a DOS prompt (I run W98 so I\'m not that familiar with ME). But there is a way: use the \"execute\" command from the start menu. In it, enter \"command\" and then hit \"OK\". If this fails, try entering \"cmd\" and hit \"OK\". One of these should work.
Now up pops a black window, just like the dreaded hanging updater\'s window, with a difference: there will be a \"c:\\Windows>\" in it\'s upper left corner. That\'s the prompt, at which you can enter commands. This is where you type the stuff I wrote, in the exact sequence and spelling, except for one thing (I made a mistake there (it didn\'t matter because you didn\'t get to enter them, but still I\'m sorry)): There must be a backslash before the \"program files\", and the initial command \"c:\" can be omitted. Revised sequence:
cd \"\\program files\\planeshift crystal blue\"
updater -auto
The \" means that you need to push the key that you use to create line breaks, which is called \"ENTER\" key (as you \"enter\" commands with it).
\"cd\" is the command to Change Directories, and it is to be followed by what directory to change to. Enter each of these lines verbatim (including spaces ( ) and quotation marks (\"), they\'re important).
Theoretically, it would be possible to enter
\"c:\\program files\\planeshift crystal blue\\updater.exe -auto\"
directly into the \"execute\" window (including the quotation marks!), but I\'m not absolutely sure that it\'ll work correctly in all cases, so it\'s something you can try if the other approach fails.
You see, this hassle is there because PS is only in early development, and thus the main goals are to actually create and get to work everything, while user-friendliness and guidance isn\'t important, as the intended users are tech-savy people ATM (so now you\'re warned ;) ). Also, be prepared to be facing bugs, crashes, missing / incomplete things and lag, as you\'re essentially not playing a game, but testing a tech demo.
Edit: Update: the newer versions of the updater place the downloaded files in the \"updatertemp\" folder, which is inside the PS folder, rather than in the PS folder, at least partially. It also extracts the files there instead of copying the old versions there and extracting to the PS folder, so you know where to look for the files if they\'re not in the PS folder!
-
Thanks friend this is an excellent thread five star:D
-
Seytra: I did what you said, but updater says it can\'t write to a bunch of files.

That\'s not only expected, but required for my solution, and exactly what is referred to in this post (http://www.planeshift3d.com/wbboard/thread.php?threadid=12936&boardid=33&page=1#18) (You will have come accross that already while reading this thread.). Anyway, good to see that you\'ve gotten that far! :) I hope you\'re at least somewhat familiar with using a file manager like the Explorer, because you\'ll need that to continue.
-
Where is download.tmp? I can\'t find it.
Thank you for all your help.
-
This is the most usefull thread ever

It will be in either the planeshift directory itself (c:\\program files\\planeshift crystal blue\\download.tmp) or in the subdirectory \"updatertemp\" of the PS folder.
Furthermore, your explorer probably doesn\'t show the file extension, so it\'ll be labelled as \"download\" and cited as \"temporaty file\" or something along these lines. This is bad, because it\'ll prevent you from changing the extension, which is required for this to work.
Therefore, you need to go to the explorer View->Options and uncheck \"hide known file extensions\".
-
The file is not there. I checked twice. It\'s not in either folder.
-
It will only be there while the updater is running. It is usable when, and only when the updater is waiting at the error message (\"cannot write to XYZ\").
-
The updater was open. I tried agian and it\'s still not there.
-
So the updater is running in -auto mode, and it is also at the point where it asks what to do as it cannot write to a file? In this case, use the search function of the explorer to locate the file. Alternatively, use the list vie of the explorer and have it list by date, so that you can see the most recent file. Also, you may need to refresh the view in order to see the file.
-
is there anyway you could explain this process of fixing this problem again? i still dont quite understand what to do.
-
i am still having problems with locating the updater zip file, i cannot find it in the folder as the updater is running. any help would be appreciated. i have been at this for hours now and i cannot get anywhere with it.
-
I feel that there isn\'t anything else to describe, at least I don\'t know how to improve it.
However, one thing just came to my mind: you must update the updater before this works, because otherwise it\'s going to try to update itself, and not PS. The updater itself needs to be updated frequently, so that a new version is likely to be on the server even if you updated it some days ago.
This is done by unpacking the updater.zip (to be found either in the PS folder or in the updatertemp folder) into the PS folder, or by moving the contents of the updatertemp folder (minus the files \"updater.zip\" and \"repos.zip\" ) into the PS folder, depending on your current version of the updater.
It must, however, have said something like \"server has another updater\", which you should have told here in order to provide the information.
I seriously hope you\'re not trolling.
Anyway, after updating the updater, it\'ll work as described.
-
I updated the updater and ran it, but the file is just not there. I searched. Should I redownload the game?
-
I just checked. I have updated to the newest updater using the method I outlined, and also tested the download.tmp file\'s existence: it\'s there (in the PS folder). It\'ll even stay there after the updater has quit in this version (though this probably is subject to change).
Therefore, I allege that your Explorer settings prevent you from seeing it. Tell the Explorer to
1) show extensions, even if the file type is known and to
2) show all files
Make sure that you make these changes global, i.e., not just for the current folder.
Now navigate to the PS folder and select \"view->details\" and \"sort symbols-> by date\". Now the most recently changed files will be on top, and you\'ll see
1) whether any files have been updated recently at all (if not, you\'ve got a problem) and
2) that one of them will be download.tmp, at least if the updater is running in -auto mode and waiting for confirmation.
My final suggestion: run the updater in -auto mode and open a second DOS window and, while the updater is waiting for confirmation of the error, enter:
cd \"c:\\program files\\planeshift crystal blue\"
dir /s download.tmp
This should list the file.
If this doesn\'t help, you can try to download the most recent version (according to the news page it has been updated recently) and see if that works. Uninstall the current version properly, though.
-
ok i read MOST of the posts and didn\'t see this....where it says to extract all the files into a new folder.....does that mean ANY folder? Or some certain one? please respond. THX!
-
I need this problem fixed, I can\'t DL from the link provided in the first post, anywhere else I can go? I\'m Forbidden to go there aparently.... =(
-
@ zoltar: yes, the folder name and location can be freely chosen by you since all you do is copy things from there to the actual destination.
@ Zaksin: listing of the directory structure has been disabled some time ago. You can still get the files, but you need to know their exact position.
However, due to recent performance issues, a new site (http://psmirror.u24.solone.net/psupdater/win32/) is up which (as of yet) allows directory listing, so you should try there.
