Title: New Default skin
Post by: Efflixi Aduro on January 10, 2005, 02:20:34 am
Well, this skin (the default one) has been used for quite a while and though I think its a good skin It seems... out of date.  So, I suggest changing the skin to match the new skin of the site.  A brown one would be much better. And instead of just brown it could look a little more like wood or somthing instead of just flat colors. You know, just make the forums look a little more professional and updated.  Now, the devs are much to busy fixing cb so maybe we normal people and mods could do this.  A friend of mine can transfer the skin into html for us since hes skinned a lot of wbboards before. So how about it?

Ya this forum skin is really getting boring now. Seen it for too long. What about a black skin?

I was thinking brown to match the main site.

no black, just more of a fantasy based skin to go with the main site and the world of PS, :)

Brown, brown, BROWN! And wood.  Like Kada-El\'s.  The smilies could use an update to.

I think several different color options would be a good idea.

Um ya the main concern isnt the color, its getting the skin. I could search around for a few right now see there are any.

I dont think theres any ready-made skins for this. If theres anything like a template to use or somthing I could try and make a skin...

You can prepare the skin yourself. I can make a CSS stylesheet, HTML
wrappers, someone else would need to make the matching graphics to this
because brown not looks so nice with the blue buttons...

josePhoenix has been working on some new forums for months, in the style of the website.

Hmm, months? Considering that I see here it can be done in few days especially that forum seems to use very simple styles. But I never used this forum software so what is the catch?

Regards.

Simple, he isn\'t using this forum software. :)

Well, I never used this forum software too. But I think every forum software has skinning ability, therefore editing CSS stylesheets should be possible...
Well, I can help if Jose will need some assistance.

Regards.

It isn\'t a new skin, the forum layout didn\'t change. Nevertheless a very usefull improvement I think.

That is true... but that isn\'t the reason for the delay ;)

The delay is because I\'m waiting for Olympus (phpBB3) which will have a new way to skin that is more flexible, but incompatible with what I\'ve done so far (http://www.phoenixcall.net/psforum).

Some of the images there seem to be broken, but I don\'t think I will fix that until I\'m working with the new version.

I don\'t think I\'ll need any assistance with CSS and such, but I will need someone to help with creating planeshift-themed buttons and such. The other thing I might need help with is creating a converter from Woltlab Burning Board (this forum software) to phpBB... The current forum software is pretty buggy (search is borked, which is one of the most noticable issues...), and some parts are not completely translated. I have found converters, but they seem only able to go from wbb 1.0 to phpBB 2.0.8 or less. Since we\'re using WBB 1.2, and trying to go to phpbb3, I get the feeling those might not work. ;)

About converting - it looks like this forum is build more IPB-style, so maybe
it could be converted to IPB. But unfortunately IPB is no longer for free. :-(

there is a free version of IPB only that it\'s a few version behind the non-free version.

it\'s up to burning board to what the forum can convert to.

http://www.invisionboard.com/?triallimited

The trial version is the only free version I could find, and apparently has the following limitations:

SQL Toolbox Disabled
No IPB Portal Included

No ability to upgrade between trial versions

Somehow, I don\'t think this would work for the purposes of the PlaneShift Team, and anyway, it\'s an open source project, why not use an open source forum system?

I\'ve never seen a converter to another bb provided by the maker of the bb you are trying to convert from. It doesn\'t make sense for them to provide a way to convert to a competitor\'s product. Anyway, it looks like woltlab has abandoned wbbfree.

Anywho, if this can be converted to phpbb, it can go from there to almost any other forum software you can find. phpBB is that popular.

You can convert databases from PHPBB to IPB. And even if IPB is very
good and powerful forum software it is no longer free, the last free version
was mmm...AFAIR 1.3 but I can\'t find it anywhere on the Internet anymore.
Also PHPBB is buggy and requires *very* offten updates, otherwise forum
can be usually easly hacked...

Umm yah those limitations are horrable... Foru wouldn\'t work with somthing like that...

Yes. Now they did it. But there was a free version who hadn\'t any limits,
and it was very nice forum. :-)

i remember the days of the real invision, that was a nice board, but PHPbb is a nice substitute... there was another board i liked...

http://www.openbb.com/

but it seems they are no longer there :( it was a nice forum system too, no real skin community for overall it was a nice forum to be rivalled against PHPbb in my books :(

The chances of this forum changing (software) are very slim.  I\'m all for creating different skins and styles for this one.  I can even add features if they are not too hard to do.   Installing and supporting an entire new set of forum software is not something I want to take on.

Post by: josephoenix on March 04, 2005, 10:08:29 pm
acraig: I can do that.. but I would need a copy of this forum software. Also, if you can add new features, why not fix the search function? and the session timeout thingy menioned in joejoe\'s thread? Also, it would be nice to have a smiley box to the left of the message text box when posting a new thread. It would also be useful to add a link to the private message page at the top of each page.

Yeah, and while you\'re at it, see if you have any time left to code PS. :)

Well, the Planeshift team could always get a forum administrator, and his job would be the maintenance and upkeep of the forum.  I\'m sure there are plenty of planeshift fans who have the experience and skills for it.

I could certanly do that.. I have plenty of time since I\'m a student.. of course in some cases that means no time at all :/

I doubt that Talad trusts anyone enough to let them have this job though.

I could but most of my experiance with forums is with invision V1.31 so I would be lost on phpbb for a while. But, I think there are better candidates than me out there anyways...
