Title: More Art
Post by: thingythekid on January 23, 2005, 09:49:33 pm
Here is a pic of an Elven Swordsman that I drew:
(http://img177.exs.cx/img177/1514/elvenswordsman4mt.th.jpg) (http://img177.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img177&image=elvenswordsman4mt.jpg)
http://www.geocities.com/phishmod/elvenswordsman.html
That\'s probably it until the weekend comes again. :D

A good look at this site: http://www.portrait-artist.org/ would probably help your drawing a lot. You get proportions right, but detail, like the eyes and that, aren\'t drawn properly.

shouldnt draw on the back of work... tisk tisk...

doesnt look too bad, but doesnt that great either... well keep at it and soon you\'ll be better :)

Here\'s another (considerably weaker) sketch of a Gnome:
(http://img177.exs.cx/img177/6085/gnome0ji.th.jpg) (http://img177.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img177&image=gnome0ji.jpg)
http://www.geocities.com/phishmod/gnome.html
He\'s a little ticked off.
Not really PlaneShift, but someone asked me to do it for them.

Thanks for the tip about http://www.portrait-artist.org, although I have yet to produce some displayable work from what I\'ve learnt. And I always draw on the back of work. So long as it\'s not mine. ;)

I\'ll probably scan in an eye tomorrow to show you. Ach, I need some proper pencils...

On the gnome the left arm is too short, and on the right arm the forearm is considerably longer than the upper arm.

Please, don\'t take my criticism as a downer to your work though, I know lots of ppl who can\'t draw that well ^_^

The hardest part of drawing, IMO, is getting the courage to be proud of your work and show it to others.

Thanks for the constructive criticism! That was where I kinda messed up the foreshortening and things... Anyways, here\'s an eye:

http://www.geocities.com/phishmod/eye.html
I think I drew it much better than previously...

Next up: A Dwarf...
I\'m trying to post only when I have a sketch to show for it so the next one may be a while.

No worries. I can take criticism - it helps me to learn. ;)

Title: Dwarf

Sorry about the long gap between posts - I\'ve been very busy. Anyway:

I think it\'s my best yet. Tell me if the image actually displays on this page or not. Comment and criticise at will. Or at me. Whichever. :P

[edit] Oh yeah, I got some pencils yesterday as well, which kinda helped a lot.:D[/edit]

Yeah it works on that other page... the head is a little big for even a dwarf, but it looks good.

The dwarf looks... mellow. You don\'t see that very often. :P

Pretty good work, better than I could do.  :(

Thanks Frarda, I did kinda wonder about that.

I don\'t think that you should compare yourself to other people, because the only way you can really see the level of skill you have is by looking at what you\'re doing now and what you did, let\'s say, 6 months ago. That way, you can see how much you have improved, rather than how different your style is to someone elses. But thanks for saying it was good. :P Also, I\'d quite like to see your work. So post it - posting pics in my thread won\'t cause a nuclear holocaust. I don\'t think so, anyway.

Anyways, as I know you all love \'em, here\'s an Enkidukai. *first drawing in a new sketchbook :D*

Well, seems like people  don\'t like them after all. :P
Anyways, I drew another picture and coloured it rather badly:

(http://img177.exs.cx/img177/7536/swordtorch8wh.th.jpg) (http://img177.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img177&image=swordtorch8wh.jpg)
http://www.geocities.com/phishmod/swordtorch.html
Also, his left side is quite badly off because I forgot about it. Oh well ;).

And another Enki to colour if you feel so inclined:
(http://img177.exs.cx/img177/9932/catmace3zs.th.jpg) (http://img177.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img177&image=catmace3zs.jpg)

Oh yes, I almost forgot:
*BUMP*
:P

I can\'t take out a pencil and just sketch something. I always end up frusterated because it looks so different that how I want it to, so I rarely ever sit down and practice. I prefer \"computer art.\"

I make sigs for people... A few examples

I shall indeed keep it up, Moogie. ;)

Thanks for posting your pics, Icefalcon. I really like all of them, especially the posters - the colours are really good!

That was the first time Frarda didn\'t post on my pics. :(

And the thing that you\'re probably not waiting on the edge of your seat for:
(http://img225.exs.cx/img225/9043/group9bl.th.jpg) (http://img225.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img225&image=group9bl.jpg)
My biggest single peice of art yet. :D
From left to right:
Paladin, Archer, Vampire (Didn\'t have enough room to draw another humanoid) and Dwarf.

Heh heh heh... I knew a Fenki would draw Moogie like a moth to the flame...

Keep up the drawing you can only get better!

You might want to start making each character\'s stances more unique... theres no character in a character just standing there straight up like a post :) That one Enki you drew sitting down in a tree was more interesting, for example.

... People\'s backs DO curve so don\'t be afraid to draw them non-straight... You might want to try drawing a \"line of action\" for your pictures, just a quick line that shows how they\'ll be standing, with a curve or whatever...

Basically, characters should be drawn doing something other than just standing still  like a post, makes things more interesting... make them pose for you :)

I didn\'t post because I was busy being other places than around my PC :)

alot of nice work here. if i were you i would practice pants and shoes... that weakest part of your art here (i suck at them too ;( ) all of your legs/pants look very... umm blocky and straightish. pants in real life have more wrinkles and curves (i seem to tend to put to many wrinkles in my pants, which of course is just as bad :( )
other than that though, i like your style alot, very good
Title: Clothes
Post by: thingythekid on June 10, 2005, 08:22:02 pm
I\'ve been practicing drawing clothes and fabric during most of the break I\'ve taken, using mainly manga tutorials. I\'ll post a pic when I can find one of my studies or draw a new one. Wow. my resolve didn\'t last long. :D
And I really, REALLY, let this thread die.
Bad TTK.

Well, as an update, here\'s my latest piece. While it\'s not PlaneShift related, I figure this is the best place to post it. It also doesn\'t have one of my cloth studies... but a lot of people said it\'s my best piece yet. I did the drawing from life.

Anyway, enough babble, here you go!

Nice! Next time, dont say its not planeshift related, say its a female xacha or ylian, and noone will be any the wiser! ;) Looks perfect to me, but then again any pencil drawing that icorporates some form of lighting looks perfect to me, because my own attempts suck in comparison. Bah, im sticking to the third dimension as far as artwork is concerned. Keep up the good work!
Title:
Post by: Kiirani on June 18, 2005, 09:01:15 am
Hmm... I can definitely see them improving as you go along.. I would post a more constructive reply except my own drawing never comes out right.. Partly because I am a perfectionist when it comes to my own work (everything ends up in the bin)

Anywho, enough babbling, it\'s looking good :)

Well...
It never rains, but it POURS.
Here is another, considerably more gigantic, update. Quite a lot of this stuff is sci-fi, sorry. Anyway:

Classic fantasy, but I liked it in the end. And I know there are no dragons in PlaneShift...
(http://img368.imageshack.us/img368/8031/dragon3gh.th.jpg) (http://img368.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dragon3gh.jpg)
This is a lot bigger than actual size.
-----

Further classic, a mage.
(http://img368.imageshack.us/img368/6650/mage2lr.th.jpg) (http://img368.imageshack.us/my.php?image=mage2lr.jpg)
This one had the head very hastily redrawn and shaded after someone said it wasn\'t very good.
-----
and to swing from the fantasy to the sci - fi, here:
(http://img368.imageshack.us/img368/8707/hybrid7ux.th.jpg) (http://img368.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hybrid7ux.jpg)
It\'s not finished yet, and I might post some progress shots if people show an interest.
-----
This is the thing which sparked my interest in drawing sci fi mechanical things - I drew it when I should have been working. It, along with the other following sci fi sketches, is based on a character called Hamish that I designed for the tabletop game of Inquisitor. He\'s mad, hence the bizarreness.
(http://img368.imageshack.us/img368/5460/hamisharm16ak.th.jpg) (http://img368.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hamisharm16ak.jpg)
It\'s shown a lot bigger than the actual size.
-----
This was my second foray into this style of drawing, and I really enjoyed drawing it.
(http://img368.imageshack.us/img368/3466/hamisharm20gj.th.jpg) (http://img368.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hamisharm20gj.jpg)
Hehe. Spoon!
-----
Evil mechano - bear thingamajig.
(http://img368.imageshack.us/img368/1552/hamishbear9by.th.jpg) (http://img368.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hamishbear9by.jpg)
Hamish wuvs him so.
-----

C and C is really helpful, even if it does destroy my over-inflated ego.
So fire away!
:D

Nice works. There are two things that stand out, and the first is that you\'re basically flat shading everything. Don\'t be afraid of contrast, and be mindfull of your highlights as well as shadows. It\'ll bring out the shapes more, and make them look less 2d. The second thing, is that your views seem mainly orthographic. People don\'t walk around at 90 degress to everything, they\'re dynamic. Don\'t be afraid to turn the forms. The one with the feline and the mace is a good start. Another good practice is try and shade things so that in the end, you don\'t see any lines. Not everything is black lined unless you\'re attempting comic art, and then line weight comes into play.

From the beginning of your thread to now I can see much improvement.  Some things you might look into reading up on are lighting and anatomy.  I know of one top-notch lighting tutorial which you can find at itchy-animation (http://www.itchy-animation.co.uk/light.htm).  Reading about and understanding lighting will drastically help you when all you have is values on a 2d plane to express 3d scenes (ie drawing).  Another thing you might look into is anatomy.  My drawing teacher recommended Bridgman\'s: Complete Guide to Drawing from Life (http://froogle.google.com/froogle?q=bridgman%27s&btnG=Search+Froogle) which I have since bought and love.  Just get a hold of some anatomy material and study bone structure and muscle placement.  Start out with bipeds (humans) and maybe check out a few quadripeds (dogs, cows, etc.) later on.  I\'m still working on bipeds though.  I think knowing a bit more about lighting and anatomy will really help pull some of your drawings together and take your skills to the next level.  Keep up the awesome work.

Title: More Dwarf-age
Post by: thingythekid on February 07, 2006, 09:25:43 pm
Thanks for the advice, peoples!
And, after a break of ridiculous proportions, here is one of my recent WIPs.

(http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/6831/dwarfpreviewresize1jt.th.jpg) (http://img218.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dwarfpreviewresize1jt.jpg)

I made more of an attempt at a good pose and lighting, as well as less orthographic view. I\'m aware that it\'s still pretty straight-facing, but it adds a little variation to my work, I think. My friend is hopefully going to draw some other critter on the other side of the page, which the dwarf needs to be looking at, so that\'s why he has no pupils or irises yet. Drawing heavy armour is fun.

Comment and Criticism builds character!

:sweatdrop: No... but I am now very flattered :D.

So yeah, I've been away from planeshift for a looooong time, mainly due to the mac client not working on my machine for some reason, and my being really, really busy with schoolwork. I am, however, alive and still drawing. I did dig out an old Graphire ARTZII from back in the mists of time, and managed to get it running on my Mac. That was a few months ago, but here's what I did when I first got it working:
(http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/2577/darkelfjpgnr1.th.jpg) (http://img142.imageshack.us/my.php?image=darkelfjpgnr1.jpg)
it's kind of a never-going-to-be-finished-work-in-progress, but please C&C!
I probably won't be posting with any sort of frequency until the summer, but I should be drawing again then.

Thanks for reading, and sorry for gravedigging ;).

Edit: Image fixed.
