Title: For Latest Updater Crashes
Post by: Moogie on February 04, 2005, 01:15:06 am
Edit: Problem solved. Everyone who was having updater problems and finding the server down over the past day will now be able to update and log in.

It will part of the updater as soon as we find somebody that can build it :).  Talad ( who usually does the builds ) is asleep at the moment.  Will post an update soon.

-_-, look around the forum: there\'s a big problem with the current update.  read up.

A NEW PROBLEM:  having copied mike\'s xmltiny.dll i ran the updater and got an error: couldn\'t find the dynamic link library MSVCP71D.DLL.

same here. . . .
Title:
Post by: Scotho on February 04, 2005, 02:12:14 am
This is just the start of the problem, I managed to update before the new updater was broken so now i get a vfs error.

iVFS not implemented

Error loading Graphics2D pluging

I think i should add more detail:

Only moments after the xmltiny.dll was uploaded i managed to update the updater and the game data itself, including what looked like new magic shop items and spells o.O

The game failed to run (sorry don\'t recall the error, but setup didn\'t run either).

So i ran the updater again which now gives me the error above on both my systems (athlon and p4)

we dont need people like you around anyway... not understanding the idea of a game in \"Alpha Testing\"...

the devs work hard, but they dont get paid for doing this, its like a hobby for them, and we appreciate all of them for working as hard as they do

and so as you leave... dont let the door hit you on the way out

Here\'s the message I get on my Win98SE system.

WARNING! Suspicious: object with tag \'iVFS\' does not implement interface \'iVFS\'!
Error loading Graphics2D plugin.

Then the error window with:

UPDATER caused an invalid page fault in
module GL3D.DLL at 0167:0187d7a1.

But I had to explode the zip file manually and may have a file out of place.

Oh, and I did check for the above/original problem.

Note: I installed the tinyxml and added the line to the psupdate.cfg.

In my Windows XP system, when the Updater askes me to wait while the files are updated. When I press okay, the update window closes, and nothing happens, not even an error message.

The Devs are doing a wonderful job on PS, and I have no complaints, only concern.

-_-\" this is a free beta... what do you expect? Exercise some patience.

I had all the problems listed above, here is what i tried:

After several tries i installed ps to a new, empty folder. I did NOT uninstall the other (newer) version!
After that, i encountered the \"MSVCP71D.DLL missing\" - error.
I manually copied MSVCP71D.DLL and MSVCR71D.DLL (was also missing, new error occured) to the new directory.

Then i once again had the problem that nothing happened after the updater told me it would update itself and i should do nothing but wait.

The (not updated) game did run without any problems, not even the \"Error loading Graphics2D pluging\". The only server found was fragnatics, a connection was of course not possible due to the elder version.

Any ideas?

Btw, where are the new updater-files stored that have been downloaded successfully? Perhaps i could copy them manually. Or what else does the updater do after downloding its newer version?

The same thing happened to me as Ayla.  I had the current version from this morning.  I ran the updater, and it fetched and installed a new updater.  Then it tried doing it again.  But after it had fetched it, when it went to install the updater, it would just close instead of running the dos prompts like normal.  No error messages.  I tried adding tinyxml.dll and adding the line to my pssetup.cfg.  It did the same thing.  So next I tried to update by unzipping the updater.zip into my root folder, and that didnt work either.  That just made it worse because now I have an \"
WARNING! Suspicious: object with tag \'iVFS\' does not implement interface \'iVFS\'!
Error loading Graphics2D plugin.\"
error.  So now im probably going to reinstall to see if I can get back where I was before I seemed to make the problem worse.

Note: I\'m running Win2k.

Okay, so Im guessing a good thing to do would be not to download updater.zip. ^_^ Thank you.

DO not bother unistalling and reinstalling!

it will be of no use, there is a problem with the new updater that is downloaded... until they get the new one ready there is no reason to uninstall/reinstall ... just leave it alone until they get things fixed

After finaly figuring out how to get the file open (I\'m not a programer so I didn\'t already know), I found the line:

System.Plugins.iDocumentSystem = crystalspace.documentsystem.xmlread

Do I need to replace the .xmlread with the .xmltiny?

Edit: OR do I add the entire line:

System.Plugins.iDocumentSystem =
crystalspace.documentsystem.xmltiny   ?

This is the dev debug version of MSVCP71.DLL, and should *NOT* be required for public release builds. Somebody forget to set the right flags or something, and either clobbered the release build or posted the debug one instead.

Title:
Post by: Socrates Demise on February 04, 2005, 08:16:41 am
MSVCP71D.dll is the Debug version of the MSVCP17.dll It seems that when the latest updater was put on the web it was using the debug library instead of the standard library It sould be pretty easy for them to rebuild the file as a releace instead of a debug.  And get that up to the website.  Just a case of beign tired when the programing was finished I would imagine.  The Devs have been doing alot of work.
Title:
Post by: shinraiden on February 04, 2005, 09:01:13 am
It\'s not just the updater, it also moves in the other DLL\'s and stuff that now \'requires\' the debug version DLL like I mentioned a couple posts above.

The result is it breaks all the applications, including the updater.

There\'s two options at that stage, either hosed users reinstall and reupdate (backup your .cfg files!) or the devs make a nasty manual patch to clean the PS root dir.
Title:
Post by: Socrates Demise on February 04, 2005, 09:05:32 am
I\'m not sure all the dlls used by the new updater seem to be in the updatertemp folder... hopefully.... that way just posting the correct build will overwrite the files in that folder and everything will work smoothly.  If that\'s not the way the updater update works it probably should be.
Title:
Post by: Scotho on February 04, 2005, 09:18:14 am
I think someone pulled the plug on the automatic updating of the updater (does that make sense) when the relized they had a problem on their hands. Like i said above i got an update shorly after xmltiny.dll was released. Then right after that the updater stopped updating itself.
Title:
Post by: angeladorra on February 04, 2005, 09:28:11 am
can it be they stopped the updater from updating?
or is it just my computer who isnt my best friend and tries to trick me.

I get this message, but because i know absolutely nothing of computers, i have no idea what to do

fatal error in glwin32.dll
csGraphics2DOpenGl:: Open(QI)--system passed does
not support iWin32Assistent.

does that make sense?
Title:
Post by: Socrates Demise on February 04, 2005, 09:31:39 am
I could tell you that uninstalling and reinstalling would get you the same error everyone else is getting however I think your bet bet is to wait untill the devs post what to do to get the update.

Ok, i unistalled and reinstalled the game. Now: the server is Fragnetic (or so) and it is not the server i had before (Laanx) i didn\'t see nor the \"local host\" option on server options. When i write my e-mail i cannot write the \"at\" symbol (@) and i cannot play with the old version because a window said me that this is a version not supprotated.
I must quite wait the new updater to install the game and start again to play.
A question: my old character in case of new installation will be lost?

What was the name of the file you reinstalled with?

*Edit:

The reason I ask is that i recived the same kinds of problems when I accidently reinstalled from a MB install one time.

Your charactor is linked with your email and saved on the server you don;t need to worry about it.
Title:
Post by: Scotho on February 04, 2005, 09:39:08 am
I got that same exact message when i replaced the \"new\" glwin32.dll with the old one.  It is likely that the problem is as shinraiden and Socrates have described we got a debug release instead of the proper release. So we wait for talad to build the proper one.

this is moving faster then i expected, the above is in response to the iWin32Assisstant error message. So the dll isn\'t exposing some interface that the exe is expecting.

>Hello

First when I updated I had that error message :
fatal error in glwin32.dll
csGraphics2DOpenGl:: Open(QI)--system passed does
not support iWin32Assistant.

Then I unziped the updater zip (found in temp folder) in PS main.
Now it opens a PS dos windows that says :
WARNING! Suspicious : object with tag \'iWin32Assistant\' does not implement interface \'iWin32Assistant\' !

And it opens the same error message than before (see upthere)

So I download last version of PS and I will reinstall and wait a couple of days for new updater.......

Whatever I want to thank all the dev team for the great job they are doing.... (please hang the guy who build the last updater ;p)

OMG!!
I downloaded the last version of PS and i tryed to connect me without touch the updater. It\'s all right but when i click on start button a malicious window appeared and it said me: \" You are not running the correct version of PS for this server\". The server changed from Laanx to Fragnetics. I have nor the local host in the server options.
I\'d like to have old laanx server...
hey: i use windovw XP...maybe that server is for MAC or Linux version? It\'s only an ipothetic idea...

This is a problem with all versions.  I tried the linux, mac, and windows version and they are all doing the same thing.  Supposedly, they came out with the update for the client and have not updated the server to meet its specs.  When you update in either of them it will kill the psclient files and will delete them in linux, and the mac version won\'t update at all, from what I saw.  Just a side note.  I am happily waiting for this to come back so that I can start playing.  I have 20 friends I work with that are going to start playing when this issue is fixed. :)

For those that *really* want to update (and get a wonderful version mismatch error :\\ ) you can use this (link below). Just understand that I\'m not liable for any damages, etc. and you agree not to sue me if anything goes wrong. Note this is an unofficial updater and is completely unrelated to the PS Team. Ok now, linky: Updater.jar (26k) (http://www.world-of-cha0s.hostrocket.com/PSUpdater/Updater.jar)

Make sure you have version 1.4.2 or later of Java (available from java.sun.com).

P.S. You can run it in nogui mode by using command prompt to cd to your Planeshift3D directory and typing \"java -jar Updater.jar nogui\"

Hopefully this can tide everyone over...

This of course may not work in linux or in the mac version, but the windows users may have some success. :)  I say good luck to you guys and I will sit and wait for results. :)  Or the issue fixed, so that we can play with the latest client. :)

EDIT: Hey Chaos, are you able to play the game at all.. Or is anyone able to play the game at all??  Just curious, as I probably already know the answer to that question.

Neocuda <--- Old programmer

If you have ever been involved with program development you will understand exactly what is going on. This has nothing to do with the quality of the server. Some of the most powerful programs have run on some of the most lame servers because of the quality of the code. Progamming is a tricky business. Even when you are absolutely sure that nothing can go wrong, many things do. I\'m sure the devs do their best to ensure that the current problem doesn\'t happen. Understand that there is a driving force that makes a programmer push themselves beyond their limit and all too often this is their downfall. Mistakes are made when you haven\'t slept for 36 hours.

I, personally, had to give up programming when I caught myself going 72 hours without sleep. ;)

I agree as I am an old programmer, well web developer, but hey, I do some programming, as far as .NET and otehr things.  That is why I stated that.  This way we can have a server that has the latest updates and one that is running the old.  That way if the updates are messed up, then we can revert back to the other server and still play.  Kinda like a testing server, as that is how I have done it in the past and has seemed to be a better alternative.  I am not dogging on anyone if that is the sense that you got from my post.  I know how difficult it is to build a game and will more than likely never do it myself.  Takes to much time and effort.  I love what they have done so far and I think they are gods for what they have as far as what they can do.  I appreciate everything they do as they have put hope into Role Playing Games.  Especially keeping everything free.  I LOVE it!!.. :)  My intensions are not all that bad, just something that they may implement sooner or later. :)

EDIT: I was thinking on a test server so that they could work out all of the bugs and then pull the update to the regular server..  That is what I was meaning..

I think you hit the nail on the head without realizing it. The operative word here is FREE! This game is hosted on a server for free. They are lucky to have it working for them. The chance of getting a second free server is slim to nil and would most likely be distant enough to be viable as well.
We\'re lucky to have anything for free in this world right now. :)

Oh. And I\'m sure there are many private test servers that the devs personally use. Still, mistakes are made. After all, they are human.

Of course.  That is why I was making a suggestion, nothing that needs to be done of course, as I think that this may cost money, and then we will all be mad at the people who suggested it..  I like your intentions as well.  They are nothing but good.  When the game finally comes back, I will have to find you and have you show me around the game a little as I will be a new commer.. :)  But hey, we all start somewhere.  I am a very fast learner, which programmer isn\'t.. ;)  But anyway, I can\'t wait to try this out.  I hope this game stays free forever. :) that would be awesome..  I can probably get everyone from Dell to start playing it. ;)

Well, the game has been free for years now and they say it always will be. This is opensource with devs working for free all around the world. The whole idea is to develop a game without a Corporate agenda. This all stacks up to a better game in the long run.

I don\'t mind waiting.  Will more than likely be one more day or so till they get it back up and running.  But hey, I think this game is awesome as far as the screenshots.  Almost reminds me of Everquest or something similar to that.. Besides, I think RPGs are the best thing that could ever come about with games.

And another thing.  They don\'t want to get paid for it, as they consider it a hobby, something fun to do..  Besides if everyone that played this game, paid 10 dollars a month for instance, they would get about 30,000 - 300,000 dollars a month.  That is a lot and they know this..  That is why they want to keep it a hobby, in my opinion.  They know that this would make them have to warrant the crashes and provide technical support for it..  Which really isn\'t what they want, they want to provide a game free of charge, nothing more, nothing less, I believe.  I love their intentions..  I wish I were as skilled as they are.. :)

Exactly.

They don\'t want to have to owe anyone anything.  They want to be able to, one day, replace this with some sort of Barney Porn site, shut down all the servers, and disappear in to the ether, without you being able to have righteous wrath.

They also don\'t want to have to deal with what happens when people have to pay for something -- they start focusing on leveling instead of role-playing to get their money\'s worth.

Barney Porn site.  That is funny.  I don\'t believe that they will ever dissapear seens how they have a lot of friends and want to do this for fun.  They will either 1. keep working on it or 2. give it to someone else to work on.  I don\'t think they will ever throw away 2 or 3 years worth of work.  This is a good thing to put in a portfolio for future jobs.

Yea how long will it take to make a new updater?

They aren\'t making a new updater per say.  They are actually going to be updating the updater with the current released binary.  That way we can actually play.  The current updater file is the development version for the server side.  That is why, in linux, it removes the psclient binaries.  Because it was the server updater not the client updater.. lol..  I would say by the end of today or tomorrow there should be a final say that would tell everyone to reinstall / update again to get the latest. :)  Plus with the latest, from what I saw, they are adding some extra really cool stuff. :)

EDIT: I was able to start a server with the update-code command..  I checked the code for the server and that is exactly what I saw, as it caught my eye.  It actually only showed the server stuff and not the client stuff. hmmm... :)

this game will never go away... too many of us here would help in anyway possible to keep the game going...

the reason the updater is broken was because it was compiled using the wrong flags... it still has the developer debug mode enabled... which those files arent downloaded...

and if you think being broken every week is unbareable, then you shouldnt be here... go play another game... and stop whining... JUST WAIT FOR THE FRIGGEN FIX ALREADY!!!!

harkin, you don\'t seem too happy today.  I am in a good mood and am not complaining what so ever.  I would help in getting this working if I had the time, but unfortunately I do not. :)  I am patiently waiting for the fix to be produced. :)

OK,  \"little kiddies\" don\'t get all excited over the new toy.  We need to acted as grown ups and not get all giddie.  More than likely it will be back up by tomorrow morning, and I would reinstall the program, and then wait for the updater to start workin again, before, updating the program..  :baby:

Agreed, though I\'ve heard of a project or two that\'s been trashed due to various issues.

And this will definately be good for a resume`.  Just wish I had the time to be more involved myself:  I wager if I could get in on the writing team it wouldn\'t be all that bad for my writing career - if nothing else, give me something new to work with while I gag through American Lit and its ilk.

I\'m just glad this place is run by fairly \'clean\' people, so it won\'t, at least, go the way of the last RP place I spent a lot of time on... *shudders*

if it wasnt for the 18+ policy on dev members, I think the dev team would be a lot bigger,  but i\'ll stick to mastering what i know and maybe some day I\'ll be able to do what I can :)

you probably won\'t need to redownload the game, unless you dont have the install file anymore, and if you do, just reinstall it and run the updater, i think that\'ll be how it goes, but they may also just post a patch to download... either or I guess

Ok. I just tried the update again. After the end of the download and the message saying it will replace the files I click OK and nothing happens. I look inside the zip file to see that the date stamp has the 5th instead of the 4th on it. I unzip it and try it. It pops up with a Windows GPF error.

We\'re cheering for ya\'s on this one! We know you can do it! Gooooooo Team! :)

Hey, give me a \"STOP SPAMMING\" and I\'ll be happy. :)

To everyone: We\'ll tell you when it\'s fixed. Stop wasting your time and energy in constantly reinstalling/updating. Reinstall, yes, but then WAIT for this to be fixed before you break it again. :)

Is my problem any different from anyone elses?
I just downloaded the game, and updated once, and everything was fine, but I kept hearing about the new server, or something

The old server with the wierd name was down and wouldn\'t work, and whenever I went back to the installer, it tried a bunch of mirrors then finally said \"out of mirrors\" and the updater closed...

I\'m confused. It seems no one else has mentioned anything like this, I don\'t get any missing file warnings or anything, it just says \"out of mirrors\" does anyone else get this problem?

I have indeed read a bunch of other posts, and all of them say that they have files missing, or something like that. Mine doesn\'t do that, I wanted to know if anyone else got the same thing, and at least I asked nicely.

And at least I wasn\'t one of the people that made another topic on the boards, and went into a topic to ask my question, rather than smap the boards with more topics of the same questions asked

See thats not the point. the point is that the updater is screwed up and will be fixed later..And we all know so telling us that your updater has problems isnt news to us

same the updater seemed to work but the servers seem to be down so can\'t see if everything went as it should by simply playing the game.

Did have my account thing changed instead of mine it said Vengance and it looks like there is a password saved thats less letters then mine was so hope this doesn\'t mean people are getting other peoples inlog info :S
