What is your favorite book? Mine is the LotR series, I have been reading the series yearly since I was six, and I still like them, I have now read every other work of tolkien, and all of his sons stuff too (tolkiens posthumouse(sp?) work) I like to read... lots...
-
I don\'t have one favorite book, more that I like authors.
William Gibson is probably my favorite author. Neuromancer was a masterpiece. Almost read all his stuff, just need to finish his new one.
Neal Stephenson. I started reading him because Venge suggested I do. Good author. Snow Crash and the Diamond Age were both great.
R.A. Salvatore. I didn\'t actually start reading Salvatore until two months ago. I enjoy his books a lot as well. So far I have read the Icewind Dale Trilogy, the Dark Elf Trilogy, Legacy of the Drow Quatrilogy (? o.O), the first three books of the Paths of Darkness Quatrilogy (? O.o), and am reading the Clerical Quintet now.
And of course Tolkien. I think if I had to pick a favorite book Silmarillion would definently be high up on the list.
-
Silmarillion is on the all time top 10 list, (i cant beleive that some people complain about it being to hard to understand)
Salvatore is good... alot of D&D players i know dont like him but take his word with a grain of salt and he\'s good...
Legacy of the Drow .... drop the quartology or whatever you wrote....
Terry goodkind, terry brooks, good authors and about a hundred others that i forget the names of
im sick of the wheel of time.... was after the second book, the writing style gets me down and its been dragged out WAY to long
-
Silmarillion was easy to understand, i also like terry brooks.
i just really hate harry potter.
-
The Sword of Truth serise by Terry Goodkind. If I hadn\'t just lost my job I was going to buy his latest book Chainfire (it hit the shelves today).
*hits the shelves today --- Once the bookstores open that is.
-
chainfire has been on the shelves of the local bookstore for the last 2 weeks...... dunno where you live... i was going to buy it but then stopped and skimmed it and desided to get it from the library..... or wait till it was cheeper
-
Silly me I had my dates all mixed up I looks like it was released on Jan 04 not Feb 04 I could have got it a month ago :P
-
Im currently Reading the Biography of Iron Maiden =)
-
I enjoyed the LOTR series. I also like the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy series not a heavy read (^^^^^) but fun.
-
My favourite Author is Justin D\'ath. The best book I read that I liked was \'Hunters and Warriors\" by Justin D\'ath. I read that about 2 weeks ago. I\'m not sure wether you Americanz and peoplz can get that book cose Justin D\'ath is an Australian Author :). I have also read Silmarillion and all three Lord of the Rings book. I also read \'Shadow Master\' by Justin D\'ath. I read lots and play the computer lots so yeah :).
-
I just heard about a month ago about the Movie for the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy I looks like it should be pretty good.
-
Im going to have to say..... Cure of the devil
-
i don\'t have a specific favourite book, more that i have several favourite authors, and i tend to prefer books in a series.
Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind.
Belgariad series and Mallorean series, plus the prequel (has two books for different perspectives, Belgarath The Sorcerer is the first, and other is Polgara The Sorceress) by David Eddings.
Elenium series and Tamuli series by David Eddings
The Redemption of Althalus by David Eddings (a standalone)
NOTE: The books by david eddings were written with the assistance of his wife Leigh.. she listened to his ideas, offered suggestions etc.
The Artefacts of Power series by Maggie Furey
LOTR series by J.R.R Tolkein.
and, i am almost ashamed to say.. the Harry Potter series by J K Rowling

2. Rainmaker
[Murray/Harris/Dickinson]
When I was wandering in the desert
And was searching for the truth
I heard a choir of angels calling out my name
I had the feeling that my life would never be the same again
I turned my face towards the barren sun
And I know of the pain that you feel the same as me
And I dream of the rain as it falls upon the leaves
And the cracks in our lives like the cracks upon the ground
They are sealed and are now washed away
[Chorus:]
You tell me we can start the rain
You tell me that we all can change
You tell me we can find something to wash the tears away
You tell me we can start the rain
You tell me that we all can change
You tell me we can find something to wash the tears.....
And I know of the pain that you feel the same as me
And I dream of the rain as it falls upon the leaves
And the cracks in the ground like the cracks are in our lives
They are sealed and now far away
[Repeat chorus, 3rd verse]

LOTR series.
Wheel of Time series.
fantasy books are just great! Maybe thats why i play planeshift :P
-
The Redemption of Althalus was David Eddings best book by far, anyone who hasnt read it should get themselves a copy... i like most of his other stuff too
-
I too think that the silmarillion was easy to understand, you just had to remember that it wasn\'t a book, but a collection of stories and historical fragments. I agree with altharion, I *really* don\'t like the harry potter series. The books are stupid, and badly written in my opinion, but what are kids who haven\'t read classic literature to do? They don\'t know better. I also like the artemis fowl series, rather kiddish, but cool nonetheless. Another \"series\" I like are the [insert color here: green, red, yellow, etc...] fairy books by Andrew Lang, these where a collection of fairytales from around the world. I will add some more later.
Note: Notice War and Peace and Crime and Punishment are not on my list! I have read both, an they are really boring! :D And I am only 13!
-
David Gemmel for his Drenai series is easily my favorite writer
John Marco is also very good
Turtledove is also an amazing writer
Shakespear has Macbeth...R&J was terrible...he also has some of the best sonnets ever.
There are too many to name...
as for Tolkien, his LOTR series was a great dissapointment, I had heard of them a lot and when I did get ropund to reading them 8-9 yrs old, I found that they were only famous for his creativity...not his writing.
-
of course, but you must also read the background material, like the silmarillion, and unfinished tales.
-
hmm...i truthfully couldnt give you a favourite book...and if i tried to give yyou a list of favourite authors id be typing for a LONG time...
so heres the best book ive read recently...
Jonathon Strange & Mr. Norrell

I\'ve read alot of truly good books by truly good authors. Among those is anything I\'ve read by Timothy Zahn, Star Wars books, Tad William\'s Otherland series, The Circle Opens quartet by Tamora Pierce, and of course LOTR. I\'ve tried Silmarillion a couple times, but I\'ve always gotten confused because I\'ve never been able to sit and read it for over 5 minutes at a time. Not a good way to read any work by Tokein...
-
My favourite book is the Silmarillion.
What I find incredible in Tolkien, and yes, I have been reading all the side stories (Unfinished Tales, Tree and Leaf, Lost tales I, Lost tales II, Roverandum, etc.etc.) , is his capability of creating a world coherent and new, in witch english myths and traditions can find a place.
The Silmarillion was not a trouble to be read, I found quite heavy Lost Tales I and II.
I liked a lot also all the Avalon Saga of Marion Zimmer Bradley, especially the Lady of Avalon and the Mists of Avalon. Really nice. Even if, when I read it the first time (I was 19 then ) I got completely different sensations.
Sense and sensibility of Jane Austen. A pure romantic classic.
Harry Potter series.
But, if I should be completely honest, I am a big reader and I hardly find something that I don\'t like.
For fantasy people I would also suggest the books on Merlin from Mary Stewart, a really wonderful way of writing another point of view of the story.
Ary

This is an impossible request, and now you have unleashed the flood:
(not in order of preference)
Amber series by Roger Zelazny
Pern books by Anne Mccaffrey
Heinlein\'s books
Orson Scott Card\'s books
Deryni series by Katherine Kurtz
Robot/Empire/Foudation/shorts by Issac Asimov
Castle series and Starrigger trilogy by John DeChancie
Fortress Series by C. J. Cherryh
Ray Bradbury\'s books
The Riddle Master of Hed trilogy by Patricia A. McKillip
Master of the Five Magics Series by Lyndon Hardy
Memory, Sorrow & Thorn trilogy by Tad Williams
Earthsea series by Ursula K. LeGuin
Darkover series by Marion Zimmer Bradley
Belgariad/Mallorean series by David Eddings
Merlin books by Mary Stewart
Tolkein\'s books
obviously I am missing some of my favorites but I cant remember now...
[Edit] Ack! How could I forget C.S. Lewis. As well as Stephen Donaldson. Now of course I am missing some great authors and books but I have just not read them yet :D [/Edit]
-
I guess i may as well ad this. If I find a book, Sci-Fi or Fantasy, even if it isn\'t very good, it makes one of my favorites. What I really loved about Otherland by Tad Williams is the way it takes alot of todays problems and shows what they can become tomorrow, and tells a very intricate tale from all kinds of different points of view. I forgot to mention some stuff. I like almost everything by Kevin J. Anderson, although I\'m having trouble getting into Assemblers of Infinity. I also liked the Seventh Tower series and the Keys to the Kingdom series; I think both are by Garth Nix. Right now I\'m trying to wright my own Fantasy story, but it\'s really really hard to do that while juggling schoolwork...
-
Thomas Harris - Red Dragon
Yeah, it is 100 times better than both movies, Red Dragon and Manhunter. I love Mystery and Suspense novels more than I do Fantasy. To me, if you read one Fantasy book, you\'ve read \'em all. :-/
Now, I don\'t really have a list of authors, but any book with Crime, Mystery, Suspense, or a combination of the three will be in my hands when I read.
-
....I saw we kill Faldrok now !!!! :P
But yeah, I do love well written mysteries...though many are terrible...most even
-
Yeah, that\'s why I only listed one book (although it isn\'t a mystery) and no authors. Not many books catch my fancy. Right now I am reading the war book, Catch-22. I heard it was a classic, so I will stick to it and read all of it. I don\'t agree much with what the author has to say, but I think I can survive. ;)

I just started reading Neuromancer, love it so far. I\'m a CyberPunk freak
And of course the Hitchhikers Guide Trilogy. It changes the way you think about towels.
I liked most of the Dan Brown books (Angels and Demons... etc) But I might have just been going along with the crowd.
-
ya lotr and silmarillion were ok. i loved harry potter
wow hitchhikers guide to the galaxy movie? i read the entire trilogy. its the trilogy of not 3, not 4, but 5 books. hehe funny use of english

Wheel of Time
LOTR
GA Henty <I kinda liked Chronilces of Narnia
-
I\'m a big fan of both Tolkien and CS Lewis. Other fantasy/sci-fi books often end up boring me or entertaining me with cheesiness, depending on the mood I\'m in, although I liked the beginning of the Wheel of Time, some random Asimov, and goodness knows what else I can\'t remember. I used to read Hardy Boys mysteries when I was a kid, now I can\'t *believe* how formulaic they are.
I also enjoyed Goedel, Escher, Bach by Douglas Hofstadter, which is an enjoyable computer-sciency mind trip.
-
Oh yea, a childhood favorite of mine, Enders Game.
-
I recently read a report in a P.C magazine that I had to read twice just to make sure that my eyes werent deceiving me....Google recently announced a programme to digitise 15 million books stored by the worlds biggest libraries and make them searchable online....Google will invest around $150 million (?77 million) in scanning books from Stanford University, Harvard University, the University of Michigan, the New York Oublic Library and the Bodleian Library at the University of Oxford.
:D If this works then I think our lists of favourite books are going to grow a little eh? :D
-
1) A Song of Ice and Fire series
2) The RiftWar Saga / Shannara Saga / Middle Earth
3) Wheel of Time
Any Stephen King book is also good :) Very sick and twisted though, not for the faint of heart ;)
A Song of Ice and Fire I don\'t think anything I\'ve read comes close to beating. Everything is pretty unpredictable, due to the writer who has no problems with killing off the main characters at any time :) With all the others, you know who\'s going to win, who\'s going to live/die and the general outcome before you\'ve got past the first few chapters.
-
Wheel Of Time has me completely gripped right now. I\'m on book 8 and have 9 and 10 just sitting there calling out \"reeeead meee!\". I don\'t think there\'s much hope of Robert Jordan actually finishing the series before he kicks the bucket though.
Obviously, LotR is a favourite, and (slightly worryingly) Harry Potter, although I detest the films. No one\'s mentioned \'His Dark Materials\' by Philip Pullman yet (I think) :o. I thought they were good, but that\'s partially due to all the anti-religious content, hehe.
And there\'s a ton of other books I want to read, once I conquer the Wheel Of Time mountain (and it is verging on a mountain if you stack all the books up..) like Animal Farm, 1984, e.t.c. I\'ve also read \"War and Peace\" in Russian, which was quite an experience..
Oh, and R.I.P Arthur Miller, whose play \"View From A Bridge\" is one of the few I\'ve been forced to study and have actually liked.
-
Two of my favorite are The science of Discworld I&II ( Haven\'t read III yet ) by Terry Pratchet, Ian Stewart & Jack Cohen.
Am ashamed to say that I haven\'t read any of the discworld books yet (Just the science ones), but the emphasis is on Yet...
one of my favorite quotes :
\" ...the most effective method we have yet devised for passing extelligence on to our children is a sytematic series of lies... It is called \'education\'.\" --- The Science of Discworld II The Globe
-
Wow, this thread is going farther than I thought it would. Yay! Those are some good authors you guys have noted.
Note: I am alive! With two dead hard drives though. :( \"New pc!\" goes the chant of the mindless crowd...
-
Philip Pullman\'s fantastic :)
Neil Gaiman wrote a good book with Terry Pratchett called Good Omens.
Ben Okri!....... I cant believe I forgot him :D
Oh, and R.I.P Arthur Miller
:( if only he had been noticed earlier
-
My favourites are:
E. Curie - Marie Curie
J. Verne - 20000 Miles Under the Sea
I also like almost everything by: J. Verne, C.S. Lewis, P. Coelho, A Strindberg, F. Kafka, B. Prus.
Regards.

Heh, so did I. Those were so predictable, even when I was 8 years old. For some reason I loved them though.
-
I found the hardy boy\'s books too predictable to like, so I stuck with Tolkien.
-
Well, that\'s not in any order, because I like all these books to a similar extent:
\"Crime and punishment\" Theodor Dostoevsky
\"Brave New World\" Aldous Huxley
\"The Lord Of The Rings\", \"Silmarillion\" Tolkien
Novels by Terry Pratchett.
\"Catch-22\",\"Something Happened\" Joseph Heller
Novels by Strugatsky Brothers (Russian science fiction), don\'t know how exactly they are translated to English
\"Master and Margarita\", \"Heart of a dog\" by M. Bulgakov
\"12 Chairs\", \"The golden calf\" by I. Ilf & E. Petrov
-
So hard to chose a favorite book out of all the ones I read. I think I would have to chose The Amber Spyglass the 3rd and last in the His Dark Materials Trilogy. Very good book I would recomend it to everyone but Christians that burn books.
-
Mody Dick for spiritual underdones.
Don Quixote for humor and philosophy.
Siddhartha for the heart and soul.
-
I must admit i enjoyed The Hitchhiker\'s Guide to the Galaxy I\'ve always enjoyed storys which involve the anniliation of your puny planet... such great references.
-
Hmm... my favourite book must be \"Phantom of the opera\" really has a fascinating storyline, and yes I like the movies and the musical too :D
hmm also the Dragonlance serie is very great, really worth the time... just so many of books in the serie :baby:

Fight Club - Chuck Palahnuik
Portrait of an artist as young man - james joyce....i read this twice...and i want to read once more...

-
I guess I should have researched a little to find this thread in the first place. I guess I got a little too excited :). But I would stronly encourage all to check out A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin. Especially if you like first person and character development.
-
hmm... books...
*looks up to the shelves*
my favourite books:
as a kid (like two years back) i read all of Brian Jaques redwall books.
then last year i read the wheel of time series so far and a song of ice and fire.
now i am reading a series by steven erikson which i will sadly soon be done with, any suggestions on where to go next?
-
The Stake, Quake and other horrors by Richard Laymon, awesome \\o/
-
My favorite book (more like series) Would be the heralds of Valdemar series. I\'ll soon be done...which really scares me. And you should try this one drey :)
