Title: the word for all player species
Post by: steuben on February 14, 2005, 11:54:27 pm
i\'ve been kind of wondering. is there a general world that can be used when refering to all the species of ps?

you\'ve got men, enkis, etc. but what is the word for everyone? sapients, feels a little clinical. sophants, read that somewhere, i think it applies. beings, well maybe, but hopefully not.

any suggestions?

I don\'t like the D&D-terms, but well, they exist...

...sentient beings? This would include even abstract things as the proverbial AI from SciFi (not that I suggest SciFi-content for PS)

Um... well they would be Player Characters, and they are being Played by folks at a  computer; So how bout PConids
(Pronounced: PeeCeeOhNID)
orPConites. Or Might be:
Nooble Inclined Phantasmal  Participant Living External Self.
Only one problem there,.. The anagram is nipples.

Very simply: People!

Exactly:  People.

It\'s not a humanocentric world.

Would you call a human a dwarfoid?

i perfer citizens
or inhabitants...
or dwellers ....
but those more legal terms

biologically well you can\'t group them....krans have little incommon with other races.  I mean you don\'t have a common name for birds and humans.....well only one....living beings...or maybe Intelligen Living Beings..or ILB\'s
hey it\'s a fantasy world....if we can\'t find a word ...we can make one

It\'s not a D&D term anymore than \"orc\" is a D&D species.

\"People\" works fine, but I\'ll prefer humanoid myself :3

God knows I would never put Karyuu in the \"people\" category, but it is probably the safest bet for everybody else.

OR

\"Random thinking thing who is easy to outsmart\" also relates to most everybody...\'cept me

I definitely vote for \"Dwarfoids\", as it is cool! :D I like it very much!
However, this wouldn\'t actually have emerged in Yliakum, and would be a purely OOC term.
However, a term might have been coined by Yliakums inhabitants due to the fact that Yliakum is (mostly) self-contained. That term might be something like \"Yliakumers\", which, however, doesn\'t sound well. The obvious choice, \"Ylians\", is taken, though it might have become synonymous for it, depending on context, just like some RL words. This would, however, be confusing OOC-wise. So how about \"Yliaki\"? You could derive the term for \"humanity\" from this: \"yliakity\" (no, not yliakitty :P), maybe spelled \"yliacity\" despite it\'s potential confusion with Hydlaa, the \"main\" city of Yliakum.

sing: yliak - a gender neutral designation of a person of yliakum regardless of species
plurl: yliaki - a gender neural designation of a group of yliak

??

Differentiating between singular and plural might be an option as well, though it\'s not strictly necessary seeing as there are several words that have no distinction. Also, \"yliak\" sounds a bit strange, but that is probably just a matter of getting used to it.

Hmm, works for me. From this day forth, I will never call people \"people.\" They are now Yliaki.  8)

here here Yliaki it is

one suggestion..how bout scrapping the singular version
so you would say
i am an Yliaki
and not
i am an Yliak

O god. i cant believe your takeing a part in this icefalcon. to stoop all the way down to my level!!! well. whatever u wanna call it. i choose \"char\"

BTW: if u dont know what it really means. u dont need to know. those times are long gone

Just wanted to say, Yliaki sounds good for plural. Though I would like to say that Yliakan sounds better for singular, at least in my ears. The last \"an\" part would be pronounced the same way as the \"an\" part in Human.
Title: but...
Post by: Serax on February 17, 2005, 10:03:46 pm
but if you say Yliakan in stead of Yliak, then what is the sense of Yliaki for plural. That would have to be Yliakans, just like it\'s humans and not humi. And because Yliaki sounds much better then Yliakans, we should not say Yliakan.

only the question is indeed, should singular be Yliak or Yliaki. I\'m not sure yet what I think about that...

Be sure to try that on my chars IC.

\"char\": entirely OOC definition of the database entry that is used to interact with the game world by the player.

\"Yliaki\": both IC term for everyone living in Yliakum, and also OOC term for the same thing, percieved as consistent world instead of an abstract creation (i.e., program).

\"humi\" sounds quite funny. ;) All dwarfoids are humi! :D

I don\'t know whether to prefer \"Yliakan\" over \"Yliak\", or vice-versa. Both would be possible, for the language quirks outlined previously (basicly, in languages no construction is crazy enough to be impossible to appear). Let\'s roll a die...
/roll 1
Seytra rolled a 1 sided die for a 1. :P This means... whatever I require right now. :)

adding the \'i\' is the rule for pluralizing in some ancient language, greek or latin or something like that. so if yliaki is plural dropping the \'i\' gives you yliak, the singular.
